I got this articulated finder to rig up temporary spot-lights for my boat that can be aimed at will. I rarely – actually, so far, never – boat at night. But in an upcoming tournament I may have to. These spot-lights will be used to see what’s in the water ahead of or beside the boat while slowly underway, but removed when not needed during the daytime. The arm can be removed from the base ball by loosening the arm enough – that makes the light removable. This articulated finder mount has a very good powder-coat finish and the over-all fit and finish is excellent quality, on par with another brand with the name of a male sheep. The two 1.5” balls are smooth and nicely coated with a smooth but sticky material that lets the unit move when needed but hold when needed. Note that this mount is available in a variety of arm lengths, ball sizes, and top plates, so you should be able to find one that will work for your finder. I have several other name brand 1.5" ball arm mounts to which I will be comparing this to. this one is installed near my vehicle's radio to hold a tablet used for GPS navigation. You can reference the attached image for clarity in my below review. The top arm is a name brand, the lower is this mount arm under review. The first thing I noticed about this particular arm and ball joints, is they aren't quite as robust as others I have used. In addition to that, the spring and tightening hardware is at best half the size of the competition. Once installed, it did a good job holding in place and I'm sure the surface the mount is attached to would break before this mount. The biggest issue I have with this mount is the lack of adjustability. Each ball joint can only move along one axis. It was immediately obvious it has considerably less range of motion than the previous mount arm I had installed, preventing me from positioning it like I need. You can see in the attached image, the name brand arm (top) allows additional up/down movement, whereas this arm under review (bottom) doesn't. It may not seem like much, but it makes a world of difference placing my tablet where I need it. I have a difficult time recommending this mount as it's at the same price point as others with better adjustability. If your particular installation doesn't need that much adjustability then it should be fine. For me, it causes and issue with steering wheel clearance and viewing angles. ... show more
