  • It's not an Air Hockey table, it's an American made Beast
I wanted to write a review on this air hockey table simply because there aren't any. Full disclosure, I did NOT buy this Arctic Wind air hockey table from Amazon or this seller, I bought it from a local game store that sells them. We bought ours back in 2013 and our kids were 7 and 9 at the time. The table is very simple and spartan...no electronic scoring, no sound effects, no lighting, no neon, nothing. If you've played air hockey out someplace on a table like that, this one is going to feel very boring and bland at first. However, you'll get over it pretty quickly once you realize that simplicity and a high quality build is what you really want for home use. CONSTRUCTION As I said in my title, this table is a beast. It's very heavy, very solid, and very well put together. The metal playing surface is flat, not warped, and very smooth. The pinholes (where the air comes out) are clean and perfectly drilled (or punched, not sure how they're actually manufactured). I will note here that when your table is new, you'll feel little raised areas around many of those tiny holes. Those will wear down and go away with use, just be patient. While still new, they may interfere a tiny bit with the puck movement but, again, just play on the table to wear them down...as they do the table will get faster. Consider it a break-in period. The rails are aluminum, not plastic. VERY important. After 7 years of hard home use, the table surface and the rails look brand new. Inexpensive air hockey tables with black plastic rails? They're going to crack and fail. Avoid them. The only plastic parts on the playing surface are the goal covers, these will show some dents and wear over time from the mallets hitting them. They're cheap, you can easily replace them if you like, but at 7 years ours have held up just fine. The blower is the only electric component and it's been bullet proof. It provides heavy air flow and it's well distributed across the table. The legs are very heavy and very sturdy. You'll need to attach them yourself. They keep the table firmly planted and level. It doesn't rock or shake at all. The hardware consists of heavy bolts, heavy nuts, and large washers. It's assembled to be solid and stay solid. There's no corner cutting on construction. Scoring is by abacus, just slide the beads to keep score. It's not electronic. RELIABILITY There's nothing to fail on this table except for the blower motor, but it's just a simple switch and blower and not under any stress. So the chance of failure is very low. As I noted, there are NO electronics on this table....that means no electronic eyes, no wiring, no light bulbs, no speakers, absolutely nothing to fail. It does not get any more reliable. The only issue I had was one of the screws that held the plastic goal in place was not drilled in with proper alignment. I fixed that myself by replacing it with a longer screw. It was minor and not indicative of a poor build, I wouldn't expect it to be a repeatable issue, just something that showed up on our table. MAINTENANCE I would suggest occasionally crawling under the able and making sure all the bolts are tight, over time a few may loosen up. That's it. SANDPAPER Our table came with a large, circular piece of sandpaper with a sticky back. We attached it to one of the sides of table. Why? With use, the mallets and puck will develop little raised bits of plastic that must be smoothed. The sandpaper attached to the side of the table will allow you to quickly sand them down. PLAY It's very fast, very smooth, and very consistent. As I noted above, when new the little pinholes may have some residual metal that the puck will catch on...you'll see it when the puck is slowing down and stops and sort of rotates around a spot. Again, those will wear off and go away with use. Under normal play, I'd say maybe a few months will smooth the whole surface out. The aluminum rails give a very true ricochet and are very, very lively. The puck moves fast, bounces fast, and ricochets true. PUCKS Ours came with two green pucks and I bought a couple of red ones. It's important to use pucks that weigh the right amount for the table. Too heavy, they don't slide. Too light, they fly off. The ones the table come with are weighted correctly. If you need to get more, order them from the company that made your table. TEXAS These are made in Texas, not China. They cost more. You get no bells or whistles or cool features for the extra money you're spending versus a China made table. What you get, however, is an air hockey table that is solid, reliable, extremely high quality, and won't fall apart. It's built like a tank. Again, after 7 years of (ab)use...aside from the dents on the plastic goal covers...ours looks brand new, you can NOT tell it's been used. This table will last for decades, not a few months. FINAL WORD Worth every penny. You get what you pay for and this Arctic Wind air hockey table delivers on the home use front. You won't have a table that breaks down or falls apart after a few months of use. Buy with confidence, this one's an American made beast that will tolerate whatever your family throws at it. ... show more
