  • Attractive, good quality blackout curtains, but the grommet top design lets in a little light where the two panels meet.
I purchased the olive color blackout curtains and overall I'm happy with them. The material completely stops light (without annoying pinpoints of light, like some blackout curtains I've used). The curtains are attractive and seem to be of good quality. The grommet top looks nice and helps the curtains folds hang like they do in the pictures (I have some back tab blackout curtains as well and it's much harder to get the nice folds shown in the photos). The large grommets also make it easier to open and close the curtains, compared to back tab curtains. To block out as much light as possible, get a curtain rod designed for blackout curtains. Regular rods will usually let light in the sides and sometimes at the top. Blackout rods often curve in towards the wall on the sides and might not come out from the wall as far, so there's less space for light to seep through. Also, you should hang the rod a bit higher over the windows if you're going to use grommet top curtains than if you're going to use back tab curtains, because the grommets can let light through. Just make sure you don't hang the curtains so high they let light in on the bottom of the window. Because of the grommet top design, I couldn't find a way to completely stop light from getting through where the two curtain panels meet. I've attached a photo. I suppose I could pin the two panels together to prevent light from getting through, but that would make them too much of a hassle to open and close. With a back tab curtain design, you can just overlap the panels, but with the grommet top design, if you hang both panels on the curtain rod the same way (so they look symmetrical, which is obviously desirable), you can't pull one panel over the other where they meet in the middle to prevent light from getting in. This isn't a big issue, as it's a very small amount of light, but if you're looking to block 100% of light, consider a back tab design instead. I bought the brown version of the Best Home Fashion Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains a few weeks before these. I prefer how the Utopia grommet tops look and lay and the greater ease with which they open and close, but the back tab curtains do a better job of preventing light from coming in where the panels meet. I would buy these curtains again and recommend them to you. ... show more

  • Purchased for Southern California summer
Color: Black Size: 52 X 84 Inches
I bought these to keep the heat down during a Southern California summer. This year our summer arrived early, by the end of April it was already 101 degrees out here. On top of the heat, I have a west facing window, so I get all the afternoon sun. I've had these up for almost a week now, and they really seem to be doing a temperature difference. The only sure test though is not until mid-July when temperatures don't go below triple-digits for a few weeks! Stay tuned for follow up review. I was hesitant at first to purchase black curtains since I thought they would absorb too much heat, and in fact the curtains really do heat up. The curtains do get hot to the touch, and you can feel the radiant heat off the curtains to about 2 feet away. Since my bed is pushed right in front of my window, this is important because if I'm laying in bed I can still feel the heat radiating behind me. But the black also blocks a lot more light than a lighter colored curtain, which helps in the end with keeping temperatures down. The curtains definitely don't make the room look like it's nighttime, but I'd say about 95% of light is blocked by the curtains and the rest of light entering the room is from above the curtain and from the sides. I tried putting down my blinds first as a first line of defense against the sun, but in reality it didn't make too much of a difference in terms of darkening the room. As for the fabric, it is a nice heavy weight material in 100% polyester, so they will last a while. They are not shiny at all and have the feel of a thick or spongey-like neoprene (think wetsuit), but don't look bad at all or behave like a stiff fabric. I did not measure the drapes to assure they were true to size as others have. I got the 84" long drapes and they don't touch the floor which is what I was going for, they're about 4" above the floor. ... show more

  • Blocks noise, heat, cold, light.
Color: Navy Size: 52 in x 63 in
Our kids' room backups right against the street, so the noise is a bit loud at times with cars parking or driving past. Also, one of the beds is right up against the wall where the window is. When I tuck our kid to sleep, I can usually feel the cold coming from the window. One other reason why I got this is because my kids love to wake up right when they see daylight. I, on the other hand, like to sleep in way past that time. I haven't got to sleep in for three or four years! After much thought, I decided to get blackout thermal curtains to help alleviate some of the issues that I mentioned in the first paragraph. We got the Navy blue color and like it. It's a nice, dark blue color. The fabric is really, really nice. It's much nicer than I anticipated even though these curtains got great reviews. The holes have nice and securely placed grommets with a nice metal material. It's definitely a nice touch and I'm sure it adds to the durability of the curtains as well as make it easier to open and close. I'm not in their bedrooms often just hanging out. We usually hang out in the living room or dining room. So I can't say whether the curtains have helped much as far as noise goes. The room feels warmer, but most importantly, standing or laying right next to the window seems much better than before. Definitely as cold. We have vertical blinds and installed these curtains right over. The vertical blinds blocked a good amount of light, but definitely not near as much as we wanted. After installing these curtains over the blinds, it can be very, very dark in their rooms. It doesn't block 100% of the light, but these along with blinds probably blocks at least 95% of the light. It's really good. Unfortunately, I can't say how they would be without the blinds, but I'm sure it's much, much better than not having these blackout curtains. I'm really happy with my purchase. ... show more
