I got this little shelf to use for purely utilitarian purposes, as I needed a small shelf for a tiny spot. I have assembled so many of these types of shelves over the years that I had no doubt this would be a "piece of cake." It was very well packaged and easy to unpack. However, none of the pieces had any type of label so I tried to look at the pictures and figure out what was what. This didn't seem too difficult initially, but I did have to get my magnifying glass out and study the pictures. At one point my husband started trying to help, but that quickly fell apart as he was frustrated by the pictures as well, thought the holes were drilled in the wrong places, and was quickly undoing what little progress I had made thus far. I finally told him to go away and I would figure it out (and I did!) Initially, I misinterpreted the three small "support" pieces as pieces that support the shelves - but could not get that to line up with the holes. I probably spent an hour trying to make the pictures in the instructions make sense to me, but I finally had to put them down. I actually had to walk away and come back after an hour or so and try again. This seemed to do the trick. When I came back I looked up the shelf on Amazon as I seemed to remember prior to buying it some talk about assembly. That did the trick! One person referenced the holes in the shelves, and for the first time I realized the shelves were not all the same. Two had 4 holes on each side and two had 2 holes on each side! Progress! Now, the frustrating thing is, if these parts had been marked with at least a sticker, this could have saved a LOT of frustration. The pictures had the two parts labeled "back left" and "back right" to start with. These two boards were confusing to figure out which was which. OMG, people, just a tiny little sticker saying BL and BR would help! Then labels on the shelves showing there are two different configurations on them. Anyway - after studying a few reviews (some of which made it worse as they were commenting how clear the instructions were!) and looking at my parts even closer, everything clicked for me! The top and bottom shelves have 4 holes - the middle two have 2 holes. The supports will be at the back of and ABOVE the shelves, not below them - as the "support" reference apparently means it supports the structure, not the individual shelves. This is why these reviews and pictures are so important, as it helped a lot in sifting out how the finished product was supposed to look. Once I had figured it all out and got it together, it is a surprisingly sturdy little shelf that is the perfect size for a small space. It is taller than I expected, but I appreciate that about it. Moral of the story is - study the reviews first next time! Also, these parts REALLY need to be labeled - that would make a world of difference. My husband was suitably impressed that I got this done, as he was about ready to throw the baby out with the bath water! I hope this review helps someone else who is as stumped as I was initially. ... show more

I've been using this thing for about three months. It's just the right size for the little space I have along the wall next to my bed. It's decent quality for the price. It's light, but not flimsy. I wouldn't sit on it, but it holds my night reading material and my Yogasleep dohm white noise maker at the perfect height -- which, for me -- is just a little over ear height when I'm laying in bed. [This may be irrelevant to you, but who knows? If external noises are bothering you at night, I recommend trying it. It creates a noise floor that sort of masks external sounds that might otherwise catch your attention while sleeping -- or, especially, when trying to GET to sleep.] Anyway, I'm happy with this little shelf. The assembly instructions are very poor. We bought two units, and even after assembling the first, we made the same mistakes on the second. None of the parts are labeled making it difficult to figure out which holes in which piece one should use. Thankfully there are a small number of pieces so a little trial and error allows it to be assembled. Great piece. Looks good, is stable, and is great for small spaces. It was perfect for our use and looks great. I would recommend this product as an attractive, stable shelf for small spaces. Do not let my difficulty putting it together scare you off. ... show more

I would say this shelf was a very good choice and the price was excellent. It was easy to put together when I figured out how to set it up on a table to tighten the screws at the beginning. How often do you order something and what you get is exactly as described, exactly what you expected? This is a reasonably priced utilitarian very small open bookcase that looks pretty good for it’s price. Like almost 100% of low cost RTA (ready to assemble) furniture these days it’s made from wood pressed particle material (MDF). To have any expectations to be able to buy any affordable furniture made out of real hardwood these days is simply not being realistic. When a product like this is described as being wood that is to differentiate it from metal or plastic or glass. Once you accept that any low cost furniture is going to be made from manmade materials what is really important is how good of a job they do in making it look acceptable and making it reasonably sturdy. This one is much better than average on both points. The MDF is compressed more tightly than some I’ve seen some of which actually looks like a sponge, this one is more solid. And as far as sturdiness, that all depends on how they choose to fasten the pieces together. It is common for most such furniture to use the post and cam style of assembly which I have always found to be cheap and weak. This one goes for a more simplistic assembly method in which the pieces are bolted directly together. I always assume I’m never going to take RTA furniture apart again so I always use a good grade of wood glue where ever wood pieces touch each other and after assembling this bookcase I can tell you that it is unexpectedly solid. I like that they took the extra effort to include matching hole plugs for a very finished look. I recommend tapping them in lightly with a rubber mallet. However they did not include feet of any kind, I added my own felt pads to avoid damaging my wood floors. Here’s one final tip I’ve learned from assembling a lot of furniture – never fully tighten anything until the entire piece is assembled. Once you are done, lay the piece on a hard floor surface that you know is flat and roll it over on each edge to square it off then tighten everything down.. That way it will stand straight and not wobble on your floor. Note that this is a small piece so read the dimensions carefully. While this item is returnable (it says so right under the price above) you wouldn't want to spend an hour assembling it only to find out it doesn't fit where you want it. For me, it's exactly what I wanted, I have a location with very limited room that I wanted to be more useful than it was and this fits just as I expected. This is a better than average value for the price compared to other RTA that I’ve bought, and I’ve bought a lot, so I like it and recommend it. ... show more
