  • Your Upright should NOT sound like a terrible Electric Bass Guitar. This is one good solution.
I write very few reviews, but I love to read good ones that are actually helpful. So I will give a bit of background and help. I was given a piezo type pickup by a friend and fellow bassist at my start. Right away I was not a fan. It turned the nuance and complex sounds of my upright to a terrible version of the sounds that come from an electric guitar bass. When I listened to records, the double bass didn't sound like that. When I started playing amplified gigs I became the guy in the band that did the sound and bought the gear. I love to research and buy the perfect product at the best price, and it's become my thing.... and that is what lead me to the Myers pickup. Straight to the point, to get the sound you want out to the Front of House (FOH) you need something to pick up what you hear. A microphone on a stand kinda works, but live shows are not like recording sessions, you move more and the space is tight and loud. I'll admit that standard pickups have the benefit of not feeding back and some sound much better than others, but when I looked into it the prices, the tortured installations and extra gear you need to carry around I was left looking for more. What I like: The Myers pickup is not a pickup in the sense I understand the word. It's just a small microphone that is surprisingly clear across all frequencies and compact. It's simple and works well. Trumpet and Sax mics of the same size tend require a box you wear on your belt tethered to the microphone on your instrument. The beauty of the Myers pickup is that it's designed with simplicity in mind. It comes out of a bag in one piece and sticks right on your bass. It turns on when a 1/4 cable is plugged in. Takes a small hearing aid battery that has lasted me weeks to months. Has a goose neck that you can bend and shape to point in the direction you want. Has a volume knob for quick adjustments and is inexpensive enough that if you lose it or don't like it, you can still pay rent. How to work with it: The signal output to the mixing board is on the quieter side. It's like a quiet microphone when using a cable directly into a 1/4" line level input (similar to they Heil PR22). I would use a 1/4" to XLR adapter or so that your board will boost it with it's internal mic pre-amp. I use mine with an LR Braggs pre-amp which gives me an EQ, DI, Signal Boost, 1/4"amp output and a tuner in one box on the floor. Remember that it is still a microphone and will feedback. Keep the knob at 3/4 of maximum and keep the goose neck near where the sound is. At the moment I have mine positioned 1/4" away from the f-hole. I use 3M Command tape (plastic velcro) on both my bass and the pickup and located it under my bridge between the feet. It stays protected by the bridge when in the bass bag and is solid enough to hold the weight of my cable and the pickup. It took me a while to get to this state but now I get no feedback even when the bass is less than a foot away from a monitor on a loud stage and it sounds like an Acoustic Upright Bass. Who knew this was possible! I've been happy with it. I've been telling all my musician friends and bought a second one for my girlfriend for her washboard. It surprises the sound people every time. Again totally worth it for the sound and simplicity. ... show more

  • The instructions could be just a little better when it comes to alternative mountings
It was delivered right away. The instructions could be just a little better when it comes to alternative mountings, but an email to the company was answered immediately like he knew me as a friend. The rubber suction mount didn't stay mounted and kept falling off so I took it off and used the squeeze mount which works well. The sound reproduction is really quite good and sounds very acoustic. It is prone to feedback so you really have to watch placement of your amplifcation. All in all, it is a bargain for the price, works well, the company answers questions fully and immediately, and I can easily recommend it. ... show more

  • Instruction Videos are awesome!
Amazing pickup! As a gigging electric bass guitar player of 30 years, I started dabbling in the world of upright basses last year. As a surprise gift to me, my girlfriend googled pickups and selected the Meyers Grip 6 due to its high ratings and reviews. After owning the pickup for a year and just dabbling with it on a borrowed 3/4 upright and my small, Ampeg Practice combo. I got a full sized upright recently and started to get real about playing it. One of the benefits and things I was looking forward to was being able to plug an acoustic upright into my Gallien Krueger amp which I have read and heard over the years as an amazing amp for reproducing upright basses. Couple that with a top rated pickup and it was a sure win! Well, not at first! I had more to learn about pickups in general to get things right, and thankfully the Myers website has an amazing Support page with just the right video content to address a users needs! Very easy to find, to the point and simple. I ended up needing 3 of their videos because I: 1) had a dead battery after over a year of owning and leaving the instrument cable plugged. *no, I did not read the instructions when I first received the pickup to unplug the cable. I knew better since the preamps in my electric basses are the same. Anyhow, Myers has a straight forward video for that. 2) Pickup placement is so important! Over the last year, I’ve basically wetted the suction cup and stuck the pickup on the front where I could place the mic end by the sound hole. How wrong I was! Again, went to their site and there was a video on placement. I removed the suction cup, installed the clip that’s provided with the unit, clipped unit to sound hole with mic facing instrument just under the bridge, and the difference in tone and volume was night and day! I could here the nice upright tones of the D and G strings so much clearer! 3) Even after the battery change and placement following their videos, I still had to crank my amp to get volume. Back to their support page I went where they have a video specifically for low gain/low volume output and address it very clearly with great options. 5 minutes of watching the video, I understood about impedance, and tested it in my PA using an XLR adapter. Huge difference in volume and tone for the better! Now, I understood what I needed to do by the last suggestion on the video to use with my amp which is 1/4” only on its input. I ran out and got an Active DI and an XLR to 1/4” cable to go between the DI and the amp. Plugged them in and the pickup and amp combination is EXACTLY what I was hoping for!! The pickup is amazing and I cannot wait for my band mates to hear the night and day difference between our last rehearsal and now. I’m a technical guy with years of band and sound experience, and I found that I had just a bit more to learn to get what I believe any pickup to work as it’s designed. I am elated that this Myers pickup is what it is billed as on time of the solid support videos they have on their site. ... show more

  • Very impressed! Pro Musician and Audio Engineer here.
The Meyer's Bass Pickup is exactly what I was looking for. I had bought the original Myer's pick up with no goose neck mic on it way back in October of 2013. It did work out pretty well, but just wasn't quite right for stringed instruments. I play string bass, banjo and acoustic 6 string. The original did work quite well for a set of bongos and also actually not bad for the acoustic guitar either. However, I primarily wanted it to function with my upright bass. I am an audio engineer and professional musician and I must say that this little condenser mic on the Myer's pickup sounds GREAT!! When I randomly was on Amazon searching for a different pickup for my upright and banjo, I saw that Gregg Myer's had updated the original design including a gooseneck style microphone that could be set inside or closer to the F hole of the bass and more easily positioned on the banjo or other stringed instrument for better miking. I immediately contacted Gregg and he sent me the updated version of the pickup. I have used several other styles of pick up for my upright over the years and this little guy holds it's own with much more expensive bridge attached pickups. It correctly reproduces the sound of my bass through my Fender Rumble 500 (new version), which, I must say, I also highly impressive for a little combo amp, blowing many other brands out of the water. That is another story. I do highly recommend giving the Myer's pick up a try. One of the best things about it is that it is not a mic pre that is locked in to one particular type of instrument. I have used it on banjo, upright bass, acoustic guitar, hand drums, and just playing around as a secondary mic on a kick drum for recording (with some inventive placement, you can get some great sub tones). As far as Gregg goes, he is great. I had been in touch with him since I first purchased the original pick up and he answered all my questions prior to my purchase. Also, dealing with him in regards to this new pick up has been a pleasure. I hope he continues to be innovative and creates more products like this pickup. Just note, the pick up does come with several options for placement on your instrument. I also will put in my two cents. I was being creative and (on and older, inexpensive guitar of course) decided to give velcro a shot. I placed the soft section on the guitar with the adhesive backing and the hard plastic hooked part on the back of the Myer's. This gave is a solid connection and it could be easily removed if need be and didn't affect the tone of the guitar. Something like this, IMHO, makes me feel a little more comfortable when considering using during a recording or on the stage. Would hate for the suction cup method to fail during a performance. HOWEVER, the using the cup HAS NOT failed for me...so maybe it's not a concern. Now...I haven't tried to remove the velcro from the guitar yet...ha. Came off the back of the Myers easily with no residue. The battery also, I have not had to change since I purchased it. Just remember to unplug the instrument from it due to the switch inside. THANKS GREGG!!! KEEP AT IT. Told Gregg I'd record a couple things with the new pickup as soon as I could. I will update with a video or link to recording as soon as I have time. ... show more

  • EXCELLENT PICKUP...VERY SATISFIED...
Excellent pickup for both sound quality and ease of use. I tried a couple of transducer type bass pickups and they all came up short not amplifying the bass as it really sounds. The Myers pickup really does the job! It brings out the richness of the bass for sure. Also, it is very easy to attach and remove. I often play in bass competitions which will will only allow a venue mic (no pickup). The Myers is easy to remove for those events. Also, the battery life (as long as I unplug the 1/4 inch cable) is very good. I have had my Myers pickup for about 1.5 years and have had to replace the battery three times. I play my bass in concerts and practice about 2-3 hours per week. I would recommend this pickup if you want excellent sound reproduction and ease of use. ... show more

  • This is a microphone, and it behaves like one.
This unit has worked fine, the placement is easy. Most of the work I do is in smaller spaces and Feed Back is an issue and sometimes limits the total volume available, so the dynamic range I can use is limited. When the spacing is available it has performed well.

  • So far it has been easy to make this product work well.
It was refreshing: The claim that it was ready to use out of the box was almost spot on. It has been my experience in the past that the suction cup, generally, dose not work. I did not expect it to work in this case, and after three attempts I opted for the clip which works like a charm. Once clipped on, it ws as if it were not there. I did not have to play around with postion much to get a good sound. I am not a pro, but not a complete hack. For the money this mic has produced great sound. I have played it through my bass amp and my Fender 4-10 with great sound, no feedback, no excessive noice; so far this mic is outstanding. Thank you Myers. ... show more
