Description

Uniweld MTF-5 Cap'n Hook 5 flame tip is the superior way to braze copper tubing. The 40 degree flame angle flows onto copper tubing and away from sensitive areas, thus minimizing the chances of burning adjacent components. Tip provides 100% flame wraparound of the copper tubing for even heat distribution. Tip elbow is made of tough, durable stainless steel to protect against bending; mixer and nut are brass. Capable of brazing up to 1" of copper. Has two O-Ring seals so tip nut only needs to be firmly hand tightened. Tip will fit Uniweld's welding handles Part 71 or Part WH550.

  • Novelty gadget, but can work in the right places
This thing has the right idea behind it. I was able to braze a good 3/8' joint all around the pipe without moving it, holding it still, and only applying the braze at the top of the fitting. Because the heat is evenly dispersed around the entire fitting, the braze will flow around and into the entire joint. There are no instructions but a few video;s you can find. Still not sure which way your are supposed to move it. I thought the flames go straight down from each other, they do not. The flames tilt at an angle. I tried orientating it and moving it both ways and it worked. I believe it is done this way so you can control the heat away from a sensitive area, for example, brazing a fitting very close to an evaporator fitting without torching or damaging the sheet metal. I had trouble brazing a filter drier for instance , on the liquid line because the angle of the flame, due to the drier fitting too short , the angle of the flame would be too far away from the fitting or orientating it the other way, the flame angle would be going directly onto the drier before hitting the Drier Fitting. I think this thing would work better with more holes and a tighter spec for what pipe sizes it should work on and maybe straight down flame angle. Had problems with torch flame outs and popping. Some times not all of the holes would have flame and would have to reset torch pressures and became a nuisance. Will continue to use and practice with it ... show more

  • Love and hate relationship with Uniweld
I really love this tool except for one thing. It requires an adapter to fit my torch handle. The adapter is troublesome and takes all the joy out of owning this. As stated in the review on that adapter, I can't take this on and off my torch handle because if I do, the adapter O-ring falls out and gets lost. You can't help it, it gets lost before you even separate the two pieces. As for the hook, I tried it out today for the second time. The first time I did what the weld shop told me. They said set the oxy acet. pressures to 1 psi each, may be 2. I did that and it didn't work well. So I tried again with the pressures set normal torch tip pressures (5 and 10). All I can say is wow. I did some test brazing on a vice with silver solder 15% on various size lines (3/8 to 5/8) and the silver flowed so well I couldn't believe it. I wanted this tool to help keep heat on the braze joint and NOT put heat anywhere else such as flamable walls, aluminum coils, and other stuff you don't want to ruin. I haven't used this in the field but I anticipate it will be a pleasure based on my bench testing. Why Uniweld made this require an adapter is unknown. It would be better if it didn't need one. ... show more

  • Great addition to your welding cart!
This torch tip by Uni-Weld is a great addition to my welding cart. It makes soldering or brazing so much easier and faster that using a single tip torch, just love it. Makes my job so much easier. Completely surrounds a copper pipe and makes the soldering job better.

  • Must have to braze HVAC lines
I’m not a professional HVAC Tech. The one issue I had with doing AC work was the brazing of the copper lines. I always had trouble getting my joints evenly heated to flow the Sil-Fos This torch tip raps around the pipe and evenly heats it with no effort. It will heat a 3/4 line and couple to cherry rod in 20 seconds. I would have paid 5 times more for this if I had to. It makes brazing that much easier ... show more

  • HVAC work don't leave home with out it.
So as you can see I have a cheap harbor freight tourch set. So of course it won't fit. But no problem I went harbor freight and bought a #2 replacement tip cut it into then ran a 10-32 tap into the copper stub. Then I carefully unscrewed the chrome hook piece from it brass base. And screwed it into the the new #2 tip that I just tapped threads into and it works perfect. I can take 3/4 copper pipe and make it cherry red in 20 seconds perfect for HVAC work.
