  • Great exercises
As an instructor I do prefer many of the exercises in this book. They truly do build skills. Recommended

  • A “Must Have” In Your Repertoire
I used this method book back in high school & college. I gave my copy to an aspiring student. I’m glad to see it hasn’t changed since then. While some of the solos in this method are written for E-flat Alto Sax, they can still be played any saxophone. It’s a very complete method book. I bought this copy to reacquaint myself with my saxophone. ... show more

  • Still the best!
I wanted to re-establish my saxophone technique after many years of not playing, this book is still the best and comprehensive. The spiral version is great for older eyes!

  • Very good teaching method for all levels of saxophone
This is a very good way to get started on saxophone and intermediate and advanced players can use parts of the book as well. This is classical saxophone therefore if you are a jazz saxophone player who wants to study a little classical saxophone, I suggest you use a softer reed than usual to make it easier on some of the studies and also you won't be playing anything higher than high F. One thing that is lacking is there is no saxophone fingering chart (at least in my version) which is surprising. For a beginner that is necessary and should be added to the book. For the price of the soft copy a great bargain and definitely worth the money. 4 1/2 stars, take away a 1/2 star for not including the fingering chart. ... show more

My son‘s saxophone teacher requested this book. In just a few short months, it has helped expand his saxophone fluency and ability. Highly recommend!

  • A classic, with lots of exercises.
I knew I needed a book like this as I have not played in almost 50 years. This is an old book, I believe from 1905. The drills are useful, but I would have given this book a higher rating if it had more on musical notation. I needed a refresher on actually reading and identifying notes and this book did not have that, it expects you already know all your fingering and can read music. That was easily remedied with some free online lessons but still. Most younger people will find this boring, lots of exercises and the few songs it has are old opera and classical works from the 1800's that probably won't have much appeal. I still think it is useful, but might be best used in conjunction with a song book with more contemporary music to keep it fun. Books like this, not properly used, have probably turned more young people off of music than anything else. While necessary, endless repetitive scales and exercises can kill the enjoyment of learning music if not combined with some songs that someone actually wants to play. If this book were to be updated with some songs more familiar with today's beginners, it would be great. ... show more

  • Wow...very comprehensive!
This book was recommended for my daughter by her saxophone instructor. I've looked through the book extensively (it's a rather large book), and I'm amazed (yes, I have a background in music). If a dedicated sax player works through this book and follows the practice recommendations, they would be a great player at the completion of this work. It may be a little overwhelming to some students when they look through it, but my daughter is always looking for a challenge. For this type of student, I believe this is a great book. I can also see this work as an invaluable tool for the instructor. No wonder it's been around since it's first publishing in 1908! Great works truly withstand the test of time! ... show more
