  • Solid performer with good construction
Color: USA A to SATA
Worked perfect on initial setup. i.e. I just plugged it and it worked. I using it with a normally internal CD/DVD drive. Being USB3 I was wondering if the separate power supply (included) was needed. I sent an email to Unitek's support asking the question. I sent it late at night. The next day (today) I received a reply. They recommend using the external adapter for all but 2.5 inch Hard drives. The hardware looked like a decent quality with the cable being pretty robust. The A/C adapter is UL listed (which is important to me as I've seen how dangerous cheap A/C adapters can be. Previous to this unit, I tried a similar part by a different mfg. It didn't work, tried different things for about an hour then returned it to Amazon. I would highly this device based on the above experience. ... show more

  • Works fine with Optical Drives
Color: USA A to SATA
This is a simple SATA to USB adapter, which works fine with SATA optical (blu-ray, dvd) drives. Not all SATA to USB adapters seem to work with optical drives, so this is one of a few that actually advertises as being compatible with optical drives. The USB cable is detachable, which is good. However, while the PC-end is USB-A (3.0), the adapter end of the cable is not standard USB. Since the cable is rather short, it's not easy to find a longer cable if you want more reach. This was not a big deal for me. The power adapter is a universal voltage 12V/2A adapter, with a reasonably long cable. The SATA connector is of average quality, so I'd not recommend pulling it out and reconnecting very often. Overall, the adapter works well for the price point, and one of the few being advertised as being compatible with optical drives. ... show more

  • Simple, inexpensive, and just plain works.
Color: USA A to SATA
This same device can be found under a few different brand names, some with a blue LED like this one, some with a green LED. It's easy to tell they're the same product by viewing photographs of the different brands. I don't know who the source manufacturer is, but it's made to a fairly high quality of build. It doesn't feel like it needs to be handled oh-so-carefully for fear of damaging it. It's very compact and connectors fit well: USB, SATA and the AC power. The only thing I'd change is the length of the supplied USB3 Male-A to Male-Micro-B cable, but the 2.5 feet or so supplied should be plenty if your PC's case is on your desk top. My PC sits on the floor under my desk, and my desk top is 3x6 feet, so I purchased a needed, longer cable to use this device with drives on top of my desk. I have no SSDs yet to try this with, but it fits and works with all of my 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs, as well as my 5.25" optical drives. The AC power adapter is NOT needed for typical 2.5" drives, but it IS needed for 3.5" HDDs and 5.25" optical drives. It's also hot-swappable as long as an attached drive is not being accessed by the computer at the time. Speed seems about right for a USB3 device such as this. I burned and verified a 4.5GB single-layer DVD in around 8 minutes while burning at a fixed 8X speed. One point worth mentioning: This device will idle or 'sleep' a drive attached to it after a period of inactivity, while connected and powered., and the 'wake-up' time is noticeable. It's most apparent with HDDs; not so much with optical drives. Overall good quality, a fair price, and a very convenient little device. ... show more

  • Much better than other brands/designs
Color: USA A to SATA
It works with all the drives I've tested it on, both 2.5" and 3.5". 3.5" only works when the power supply is connected, which is to be expected. The LED is pretty bright, it's a blue LED which is a shame as I can't leave it connected to my computer overnight. It seems like it will last awhile, and the power supply is more compact than others I have. Unlike some of the other designs I have, it works without being connected to the power supply, combined with the detachable cable it's a lot more convenient for travel. ... show more

  • A very handy adapter
Color: USA A to SATA
I have occasion to use an SDD for backups, get files off an old HDD, or use a DVD unit salvaged from other computer, and this setup works for all of those. The SDD only needs the SATA to USB cable, but you'll need to use the included power supply for other more power hungry devices. One caveat - I have found devices connected with this adapter setup are not necessarily recognized when a USB thumb drive is expected by an app. Here is an example: I can't use it to apply manually downloaded nav system updates to our new KIA. I just had to get an thumb drive big enough to hold that data - substituting an SSD connected through this adapter to a USB port won't work. Maybe this is a rare occurrence, since my other usage has caused no compatibility issues at all. ... show more
