A good working speaker at am excellent price

  • More of a "CB" good buddy speaker than a refined Ham Radio speaker.
More of a "CB" good buddy speaker than a refined Ham Radio speaker. I mounted my Alinco DR-635T dual band transceiver's main unit under the rear deck of my BMW 530i which made perfect sense for the antenna transmission line, keeping it nice and short. But this left the speaker in the trunk which I located immediately underneath a cutout.. which would have worked if it was a health speaker to begin with, but it was a bit weak and I couldn't hear it as well as I wanted under all conditions. My plan was to source an external speaker, mount it under the rear seat, and insulate it well so the sound has the desired 'tone' for voice transmission. The speaker itself was constructed "okay", but the bracket is the type with two thumbscrews, one on each side which loosens up. There is a volume dial on the side. Who needs that? Even a CB has a volume control. It's just something else to break, be out of adjustment, or otherwise cause issues. I used a 3 " piece of metal DUCT (the metal type used to tape duct work togetehr) over the knob to keep it where I wanted. The bracket wasn't usable, so I made a high density foam pocket clued to the bottom of the floor and "press fit" held in on the top by the seat bottom.. leaving the speaker facing forward towards the driver. This should have been perfect but sound playing through steel (there is steel as the baseboard to the seat) doesn't make for good sound so moving the carpet away a few inches I used a Sharpie to outline the speaker location and then drilled 3/16" holes, tightly together, in the outline. The result was much better sound. Keep in mind that because this speaker has it's own 8 watt amplifier built in, that it also requires a set of power wires ran to the box. This could be a major inconvenience to some people. The instructions recommend you grab the power from a "key-on" ignition source so the speaker doesn't drain the battery overnight. The problem with this is we often use our radios with the power of the car off.. and someone not familiar with the car could get stuck on why there's no sound. To give it the best of both pros and cons I simply wired in a relay so the power wire running to the radio from the battery could be used to trip the relay. In other words turning on the radio turns on both the radio and the speaker. The relay allows this. So while I'm pleased with the installation I question several things. 1. An 8 watt amplifier designed for radios normally outputting 5 watts? 5 watts would have been fine with no amplifier, no volume knob needing to be taped, no power wires, and no relay 2. The mount needs to be improved. Maybe some set screws? 3. The overall quality of sound needs to be improved. It's usable for sure. Just not ideal. ... show more

  • Quality made, loud, amplified speaker
Used to relocate my Yaesu FTM-200dr under the back seat of my Ford escape. Speaker is plenty loud and has a nice rich tone. Noise cancelling works too help make received audio less "tinny" (the ftm-200 sounds tinny and harsh to my ears) power leads on the speaker does NOT have a plug so you'll need to wire it into your fuse box or get a accessory pigtail and splice it in. I chose the latter and it works just fine. ... show more

  • Loud!
I purchased a brand new Btech UV50X3 and anytime I had the audio over 1/2 way it would distort on any external speaker, even professional grade units like Motorola. Noticed same behavior on friends Btech. This speaker cured the problem and the audio is VERY loud, I could use it for an external speaker. I like that it powers down when not receiving any input. ... show more

  • BC23A vs BC20 Comparison
I wholeheartedly approve both of these speakers, but they ARE pricey. Compared to say the Vanco Big Mouth units or even the Cobra, it's very clear, though a little bassy, but that's fine. As for the BC23A, though it is a smaller size, it does offer amplified power over the BC20 unit that is larger. The sound can be slightly more "tinny" when amped up to max power, but it works wonders in loudness on just about any CB that you would use this with. I like to turn up the volume on the unit so I have more latitude on adjustment with the CB volume controls. I have this installed in the footwell of my Truck, but I can still hear it clearly with the windows down driving on the freeway. So as many of you already know, yes, there is the caveat with the Stereo Speaker plug, you'll need an adapter or to convert it to a mono plug by soldering your own or having someone modify it for you, and yes, you'll need to actually supply clean 12v power to the speaker amplifier. If you have alternator wine in your power, run a clean power line directly from the battery (remember to use a fuse). If you don't want the hassle, the BC20 is a great speaker that will work just fine with your CB. In the case of my BearCat 980, the speaker offered almost identical output to the built in speaker when comparing the BC20. The only thing is the CB is installed in a concealed location necessitating the use of an external speaker. As far as installation considerations go, a lot of cars manufactured as of late have side air bags as well as headrest airbags as standard options. Be very careful where the speaker is mounted. Some folks choose to use the B-Pillar of their trucks or cars to install the speaker, and watching some IIHS and NHTSA youtube videos on side impact crashes, the speaker will likely become a high speed projectile if these airbags are deployed. If mounted on the driver side B-Pillar, you will likely not be hit, but your passenger will certainly become a target, and vice versa. ... show more
