  • Finally a step-down converter that's also easy on the eyes
Size: 1600 Watts
If you've bought power-hungry electronics equipment in Japan and you're worried about our US voltage causing damage over time (you should be!), the UMI 120V to 100V Converter may be your best bet. I've lived in Japan and Europe for many years and have used many converters (220V, 110V, 100V), but most of them sported a bulky, ugly, industrial design or were slim-lined solutions that couldn't handle higher wattage appliances. I've used the 120V to 100V step-down model for a few weeks for a Japan-made Tiger "donabe" rice cooker with a 1,000 watt rating and have been operating it without issue twice a week or more. The UMI Converter looks good -- almost like a small, slim desktop PC, and has a clearly labeled input and output outlet. I have it permanently situated behind my rice cooker along the backsplash of my kitchen and it blends in nicely. It's easy to turn off when not in use and has clear read-outs for voltage and wattage on the front. It's not cheap In case you're confused, even though most US appliances are rated for 110V, if you measure the voltage output of your outlets you may actually encounter 120V and 125V current. Since my rice cooker is designed for sale in Japan only and has electronic logic modules/timers/displays and speech output, it probably doesn't take kindly to voltage fluctuations. With 1,600 Watt capacity, it can handle my 1,000 Watt cooker without problems and guarantee a long lifespan. I'll report back in in case the converter bows out prematurely, but so far, it's exactly what I was looking for. ... show more

  • Saved My Wife a Disappointment
Size: 1800 Watts
It’s a bit heavy and bulky, but it gets the job done. It has two outlets and a digital display showing how many watts you're using. Trust me, this is extremely important—here’s why: My wife bought some Japanese appliances and was told by the store staff that they'd only work with 100V (the Japanese standard voltage). I thought it would be a great idea to buy a small travel converter to solve the issue. It did not. When we got home, the small converter overheated and shut down after 5-7 seconds. The voltage was correct, but the wattage wasn’t. (I’m not an electrician, so I didn’t check the wattage when buying the small converter.) We thought we’d bought a brick, but there was still hope. After a bit of research, I found this converter. So go ahead, buy your Japanese appliances with confidence, because this will keep you safe. Just make sure to check your appliance’s wattage—it should be LESS than what this converter can handle. If your appliance needs more power, you’ll need to buy a higher-capacity converter. ... show more

  • Works great
Size: 500 Watts
Recently, I recieved a large Henamatsuri celebration shrine from a friend in Okinawa. It is a very old family heirloom, and hadn't worked in a while. Aside from needing a new key, as it also was a music box, it needed two japanese shrine lights and of course, a converter box to run in America. This box converts wonderfully and allows me to leave the shrine on to illuminate March 3rd (hinamatsuri day) or any other chosen time! Sugoi! ... show more

  • Pricey but works
Size: 1600 Watts
Purchased a Dyson hair dryer (saved $300 usd) in Japan. I assumed a simple outlet converter would do the trick when I brought it back home. Upon further research, I needed something stronger versus the typical international outlet. Electronic devices that uses more energy (hair dryers, kitchen equipments, etc) entails for a stronger converter. To be honest, I didn't think it was going to be this big and heavy! If I knew, would've just bought the Dyson in the US. I'm afraid to keep the convertor in the bathroom (constant moisture, steam, water) in case of damage. But! it gets the job done. Haven't experienced any issues or power break. I guess I have to go back to Japan and buy more hair or makeup electronics to get the most of my converter in one space! lol ... show more

  • Sleek appearance in the kitchen
Size: 1800 Watts
I use this for a rice coooker which is designed for 100V. So far it has been working well. I heard that you can use 100V appliance directly into 110V, but it nmay shoten the life. So I am happy I invested in this device and it looks beautiful.
