I initially experienced some frustration trying to use these stones / plates. I was trying to sharpen a very cheap Harbor Freight plane iron to break in the plates and just couldn't get it to abrade on the coarse stone. As a last ditch effort, I sent an email to Best Sharpening Stones, the seller, and they got back to me the very same day. Even asked if I would send a phone number so they could call me. They also provided some details and information on sharpening that helped me out a ton. Really excellent customer service experience for me. I couldn't recommend them enough. Even if you're not going to buy these diamond plates, but some other sort of sharpening stone, I would definitely recommend you buy from this company. After I received a bit more instruction and a bit more information, the stones really started working much better. The issue was user error and knowledge based as opposed to product based. Mine were very flat and consistent out of the box. No issues with fit or finish there. Nice weight, decent little holder for the stones and they seem to work quite well. I'm no expert, but they're definitely a step up from the smaller composite DMT "stones" I had purchased before. I wish I'd just gone with these stones from Best Sharpening earlier. Recommended for anyone wanting to get into sharpening with diamond stones and wants something with quality. Sharpening with these are an ease and puts a great edge quite quickly. The steel block that they're attached to does have some heft to it, so these are quite bulky stones. Regardless, they are great stones, definitely recommended. Some lapping/honing fluid to go with these are also strongly suggested as well. ... show more

    • Good stones, suit my needs
I am new to any sharpening - I bought these for wood chisels so I can learn some basics with woodworking. After watching a lot of tutorials about sharpening chisels I settled on these as likely an adequate solution. Indeed they work well. I started by testing them out on an Irwin chisel that was in rough shape, had been dropped many times and used incorrectly (by me) many times. I was able to get it very straight and sharp. I have also used these to sharpen up a set of new Dewalt chisels as well as kitchen knives. I also bought the holder that goes with these and a leather strop paddle for finishing. The advantage of these stones is that they are a large size which makes working with them easy, also they are easy clean up with water. Keep them dry or they will rust. I would like to get a stone even more fine than the extra fine that comes with this set, but that will set me back quite a bit, and honestly, relative to my skills does not seem necessary at this point. These work extremely well and definitely very quickly. I have tried several different stones for sharpening and even have a very nice Tormek machine that is good for many applications. I bought these specifically for sharpening plane irons after watching a video on sharpening by Paul Sellers. I had never sharpened free hand before, and I was a bit nervous about trying it, so I experimented with a cheaper iron I figured I wouldn't use much anyway. After a little practice (very little) I am getting much better with it and I am having excellent results with that cheap iron. So much so that I haven't sharpened the Hock Tools iron I intended to use in its place. I'll wait for that until I am much more proficient at free hand. The holder exceeded my expectations by a mile. I was hoping to buy this set without it in order to save some money, but it is fantastic. It holds the plates securely and "sticks" to the surface you set it on to do your sharpening. It doesn't move or shift one little bit at all. All I can say about the seller is that I had absolutely no problems whatsoever. My purchase was processed and delivered quickly and without a hitch. I am just giddy right now. Quality this high hasn't come from a box in many years. These stones make easy work of making knives "shaving sharp". You can slice veggies so thin that you can almost see through them. All of the crappy stuff I have purchased through the rears have been totally redeemed by this set. Even those pesky wood chisels are like new again. If they weren't so dang heavy I'd carry them with me wherever I go. ... show more

These arrived on time, and I was surprised how HEAVY they were. These are very solid you can tell they are a quality product. However. I had some patches of diamond come off of the 600 grit stone while I was conditioning them according to the directions. Therefore I knocked off one star. But otherwise, they work great and are a very solid addition to my shop. I will be keeping an eye on them to see if any other patches of lossed diamonds develops, but so far, they seem to be holding up great. I would definitely buy again. ... show more
