My wife and I hike a lot, and I like to fly fish in remote areas. I'm not so worried about four legged creatures, but I've personally had enough encounters, and read of many more, with the two legged kind in the backcountry to want some kind of protection with me. It's unfortunate that a person has to keep their eyes open even when doing something relaxing in the wilderness, but sadly this is the world we live in. I don't have any desire to own a firearm, and you'd likely be in legal trouble in most states even if you were clearly trying to defend yourself with a gun these days. If you want this spray specifically for bears, then I think you are better off using this than a gun anyway. Unless you're carrying a Dirty Harry hand cannon, your more likely to just make the bear angry than stopping it from eating you. I saw a documentary this morning on bears, and discovered that most species in North America can run up to 35 miles per hour, so good luck trying to put a bullet in a 300-1400 pound beast moving that fast. I wish you even more luck trying to run away. There is another pepper spay device I considered on Amazon, but it looks like a hand gun, and I feel that carrying something like that around is bound to cause a misunderstanding. This spray is about the size of a medium can of hairspray, and comes with a stretchy pouch that has a loop for your belt or backpack strap. It has a white plastic safety clip that prevents accidentally spraying yourself while moving around, but that is very easy to pull off in a hurry, and also easy to put back on. I hope I never have to use it for a bear or a person, but I feel a lot more relaxed having it with me and knowing it has a 30 foot range. ... show more

OH my goodness, this stuff chokes a goat, I press the trigger my mistake orang cloud appaired and I ran as fast as I could, but the cloud moved faster. I was burning, from my throat, eyes, and my nose. definitely worth the money.

The best answer to difficult situations. What you gonna do in certain situations? Call the cops after the incident. Call the cops during the incident and be at someone's mercy until they get there. Get a gun? Shoot someone in the body and you're going to jail, if not prison. Shoot someone in the leg and hope you don't hit an artery? Or, how about a stun-gun? Unless you buy a really nice one you only get one shot, and it is difficult to use them while they are still a safe distance from you. And, if the person is wearing thick clothing, they are useless. UDAP's larger sizes keeps the person from dying, is effective on anyone, wearing anything, and effective at quite possibly twenty feet away or more. Spray a little burst from that distance and if a person continues to advance they will be at least slightly incapacitated; making it easier for you to hit them with another shot, which will completely incapacitate them, and put them in a non-lethal living hell for twelve to twenty-four hours. I have all my female friends train and carry this because it really is the only logical answer to such situations. P.S. It gives a kick when you press down on the lever; the power of the spray effects your ability to use just a little burst at first; it really is necessary for you to get one for training purposes. Get the real thing instead of the inert for greater understanding of the product. P.P.S. I've experienced military grade teargas and UDAP bear spray. I'd rather the tear gas any day. The YouTube videos are all shot pretty far away. Spraying within ten feet is way, way, way, way more effective than at twenty or more; it drenches the attacker instead of misting them. ... show more

    • Good for breaking dogs apart

I bought this just to have in case of an emergency. I have 3 american bulldogs and 2 of the males do not get along. I had been talking to someone who breeds pit bulls and asked them what I should do to break the dogs up if they get into a fight. They had told me to buy this to break the dogs up rather than get in the middle of them and possibly get hurt. I have gotten in the middle of them one too many times and it's really difficult to break them apart. I'm not thrilled with the idea of spraying my dogs with mase, trust me, but if it is a matter of one dogs life or death I will do it and I am glad that this product exists, with only a temporary outcome. I feel a bit safer now with it in the house. When I received it, I was very nervous to handle it and was shaking when I held it. I sprayed it outside in my yard, just to see what it was like and the trigger is very very powerful, so be careful. A lot of sandlike particles came out of it and it scared me to death. I hope I never have to use it, but if I do at least I will be prepared. I read all of the reviews and this product seems the best in an emergency type situation. ... show more

Havent used this on animal or human yet, hope not to have to. I did a very short test burst outside the garbage door with the wind blowing away from the house. Half hour later went into the garage, started sneezing. Wife and kid came home 45 mins after the spray, stepped out of car and started coughing, eyes watering, actually some gagging was also involved. Yeah, I got in a little trouble over that, the divorce is almost final. But damn this stuff is strong. Seriously, got this instead of carrying a firearm all the time in the vehicle and also carry it in my jersey on bicycle rides. The jet is so powerful I worry less about blowback from the wind while riding. Update/Addendum (7/8/13): I have used this twice while cycling, when I felt no choice against aggressive dogs pursuing me. Easy to grab, flick off thumb cover, aim and shoot a powerful jet/cone of spray. A VERY brief spritz immediately caused the dogs to do a 180, and I mean immediately. The spray is so powerful I had no worries when spraying to the side that I would get hit. My wife carries it either with, or as an alternative to her concealed carry pistol. I am very confident it would disable any attacker and from a relatively safe distance. It is such a powerful dispersal spray that instinctive point and shoot is all you need.
