  • Good CX-5 Headlamp Replacement
[Info]: -This headlamp is a replacement for a 2013-2016 Mazda CX-5, which originally came with halogen headlamps. (Note: trying to replace your halogen headlamp with an LED headlamp and vice versa will NOT work because there are different wire harnesses for each) -I used this for a 2016 Mazda CX-5 with halogen headlamps (please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchasing!) -You will definitely need to take off your front bumper cover to remove your stock headlamps first. A guy on Youtube has already made a video about how to do this, and it is surprisingly straightforward. Don't be afraid to do this yourself. I will caution you that you will need something soft to put the bumper cover onto, after you've removed it. The worst part is disconnecting the fog lights connectors from the fog light housings on the bumper cover (if you have fog lights on your bumper cover). -Do yourself a favor and remove the plastic cover over the left/right adjustment screw, on the back of the headlamp. When you re-bolt this TYC headlamp back onto your CX-5, it's likely that your headlamp beams will be slightly mis-aligned from left-to-right. Simply rip off the plastic cover over the adjustment screw, because it's hard to do it, once the headlamp is back on your CX-5. [Good]: -The headlamp fit is great! Strangely, this set of head lamps (both left and right) seemed to fit better than the ones from the factory. What I mean is that when I removed the stock headlamp, it was a little tough to remove the headlamps from the front bumper. When I installed the TYC replacement head lamps, the fit was easy to put back on. I think either their dimensions or tolerances are different and allow for an easier assembly. -The headlamps come with bulbs and are pre-wired. All you will need to do is connect the wire harness from the headlamp (included) onto the connector on your vehicle. If I remember correctly, it's a brown connector, and there's only one way to orient it, so you can't mess it up. [Not so good, but still not bad]: -First, the low beams: They're probably about as bright as the factory low beams. I do not recall if the width of the beam is the same. The cutoff is significantly sharper, however, due to using clear lenses on the projectors, whereas the OEM Mazda part has a frosted lens. The problem I have with the TYC version is the amount of glare above the cutoff. I won't go into how I found this out, but there is clearly a U-shaped plate that is spot-welded near the cutoff line, so that there is some light that is reflected back up. The purpose of this light is so that your headlights can accurately light up street signs above your cutoff. However, the amount of light coming from this is a bit excessive, in my opinion. Short of opening your headlights, finding that tab, and coating it with some matte black paint (something that you should NOT attempt because it requires you to bake open your headlight), this glare is not fixable. It's not terribly more than the stock Mazda, but it was surely noticeable when I fired the low beam for the first time. -High beam works ok, but appears maybe slightly dimmer than the stock Mazda high beam -Turn signals also work fine, but the color of the bulb is like an aged amber. If you're replacing only one headlamp of your original pair, you might notice the color difference. I doubt 99% of people will, but I'm a headlight enthusiast. [Bottom line]: This is a good replacement. I nit-pick headlights a lot, so I know some things should be taken with a grain of salt to most consumers. If you're just looking to replace your headlamp after a wreck or something, it's good! ----------------- [Retrofitting]: If you're buying these TYC headlamps to do a projector retrofit on your CX-5, then you may want to check out my thread on HIDPlanet. Just google search 2016 CX-5 hidplanet, and you'll probably find it. I want to give you a warning that you're going to need to do some cutting to the internal mount that holds the stock projectors. I retrofitted some S2000's into mine, and the mount is very thin in places, due to where I had to cut a hole for the S2000 projectors. Definitely choose a small projector for your retrofit. MH1's will probably work fine. ALSO, huge bonus: the bottom of these headlamps have mount holes for you to mount a ballast (only OEM ballasts that have 3 screws, like Mitsubishi, Matsushita, etc.). ... show more
