I actually don't mind this at all. It's relatively comfy, it is light and easy to move, allowing me to make much more efficient use of my small room, and it doesn't have a strong smell(at least not to me). The image is also accurate, and it works similar enough to a Japanese futon for someone like me, who doesn't mind a slightly harder bed, that I didn't immediately want to return it. The problem is that, while the image is accurate, the listing still calls it a Japanese futon, and it's not. It's more like a really dense comforter. If you are expecting the firmness and support that a Japanese futon will give you, this is not it. You WILL feel the floor underneath unless you have tatami or something else soft underneath. If you are going to use it with no additional support, I would recommend only using it on a carpeted floor. Certainly not tile or hardwood. Basically, if you're okay with sleeping out on hard ground in a sleeping bag, then this is probably fine for you. If you're looking for a genuine Japanese futon, you're probably better off going to a specialty store, or something. I haven't seen any thing on Amazon that comes closer than this.

I found the "futon" to be more of a hard pad. It was recommended to add other items to this "futon" to make it more comfortable, but if I wanted a bunch of other things I wouldn't have bothered to buy this in the first place. They also have a 46% restocking fee if you decide to return it. And it will cost you that much in return shipping as well for the weight and size of box. So, order with caution. I won't buy another one. That's my personal opinion and verified purchase account of the truth. I've stated this before but either the vendor or Amazon would not publish it.

Love it. Super comfy. Here is the deal with the smell. It smells like new furnature. If new furniture smell bothers you, just air it out. Didn’t bother me in the slightest. It is a few inches narrower and shorter than the description because I think they took measurements of the fabric case unstuffed instead of stuffed. Not a big deal. Easy to roll, easy to flip, slept on it a few nights in a row and it’s still feels like floor sleeping, just a bit more luxurious lol. I use a waterproof mattress cover with a slight stretch and a fitted sheet. Makes it a *little* less comfortable (less cushy feeling somehow), but since the case isn’t washable and it’s filled with natural fibers...I’m not going to risk my toddler barfing or my dog peeing on it hah. My hip still touches the floor when side laying, but it’s not bad. I will be getting a foam puzzle mat to put underneath when we switch from carpet to hardwood flooring. I will update this once I’ve used it a month or two. But it’s a great buy. I want one in every size!!!! Modular bedding 😁 Edited: Love this thing, changed from 4 to 5 stars. I bought a pillowy mattress pad and it’s SO comfy with both. Will keep updating as time passes by :) Edit 4 months later: use it every night, it has compressed after daily use to be about an inch and a half thick - still super comfortable though and I’m really happy with it. Added a pic of my husband’s and my futon side by side.his is newer and definitely feels fluffier...but not more comfortable I guess? Hard to explain.

I've been wanting a proper Japanese futon for a while now but didn't want to fork over $300 for a J-Life shikibuton. The twin mattress from D&D is everything I could have hoped for. It provides just enough padding to keep my hips from hitting the ground, has no chemical smell, is lightweight, and allows me to sleep on my side while maintaining proper spinal alignment. The padding is approximately 3" but when compressed it probably goes down to 1-1.5". The morning after sleeping on this futon was the first time in months that I've woken up without any sort of back ache or tension in my shoulders from sleeping on my back all night. Because the cover is not removable I laid a flat sheet over it. I use a buckwheat pillow with inner sections sewn to keep the hulls from shifting around too much so that my neck gets the support it needs during the night.

Very nice and Added as a topper to my twin mattress on the floor. - Pros 1. Thick 2. Comfortable 3. Easy to fall asleep on 4. Very heavy more then 20 pounds so it will be durable 5. Glad to not send back before giving it a chance 6. Fast Shipping 7. Feels very soft the outer materiel - Cons 1. Was tempted to send back after buying a mattress local but costs to do so on 'unopened box' would have been $50 dollars for a $80 mattress then me losing 2/3 of my money. you are only allowed to return through fedex. 2.1 Vacuum packed and near impossible to get out of shipping box without destroying box 2.2 Impossible to repack it for most people thru ordinary means 3. Does have a temporary smell, but goes away in a day, not too bad more letting you know its new. 4. Make sure your 100% committed to buying as once it is sent it would be nightmare to return for any reason.

as some others have noted, this does not have a foam layer in the middle (the label tells you that is is 5% shredded foam) so it does compress w/ use. i've had it 4 months -- no smells -- and use it on my old queen size bed frame which i've covered with a rug. i roll the futon up each morning and make it up with a set of XL twin sheets each evening. it only takes a few minutes to make it up or take it apart. during the day the bed looks like the photo. i stand the futon next to the bed. i think you may be able to see it in the upper right corner of the photo. i've just put a 2" mattress topper under it (under the rug so i don't have to stash that away every day) as it was a bit hard for my old bones (i'm in my '70s) if i slept on my side. it's really much better than my 20 year old memory foam mattress which was pretty degraded and which never gave the kind of support this does. 03/06/2019 here's a picture of the futon w/ an XL twin fitted sheet.
