  • Our first “real rc” purchase…..3rd & final update.
Adding this 3rd and final update after 5 months of ownership. This isn’t a cheap hobby. So far I’ve replaced nearly everything on the truck. It all pretty much will break sooner or later. I will say that I’ve not bought any upgrade parts twice, so the upgrades were all worth it but man does it add up over time. Easily more than the purchase price of $450. They are fun but just be prepared to spend more money. I’ll update the parts list below, but honestly just saying you are going to replace it all sooner or later is much easier lol. Can’t say I regret buying it, but I bought 2 of these for my son & I to mess with so every time we break something I have to buy the upgrades twice. Used to be a competitive bass angler so I know about expensive hobbies. RC cars are not that kind of money, but I can tell you by the time it’s all said and done with several batteries, charger & upgraded parts you will have over $1000 invested…….or you’ll have a broken truck you never mess with. Good luck!!! First time R/C buyer complete break down with very important tips to perspective buyers on the fence. I recently bought 2 of these Slash 4x4's for my son and I to have time together. I've watched TONS of videos trying to decipher all the choices. We wanted a truck that was very multi-purposed and under $400. Not the fastest or best basher but something that could do it all. Also indented to run Lipo’s but more for the extended run times rather than the hyper speeds most of the people online talk about. About the Lipo batteries...this worried me somewhat due the over heating concerns I've heard about. We are suburban dwellers and don’t plan to compete with our trucks. We ended up picking the Traxxas Slash 4x4 (non-vxl) for its huge aftermarket support, wealth of online tips and reviews and endless aftermarket options. Another verified purchaser of this same truck recommended going for the bigger Mah 2 cell Lipo’s for the extended run times without the heat issues and increased wear and tear associated with the hotter 3 cell Lipo’s this was BY FAR the best advise I’ve gotten so far. We bought 4 of the Zeee 2S Lipo Battery 7.4V 80C 7200mAh, plus wire adapters and charge them with a Traxxas 2972 EZ-Peak Plus 100 Watt NiMH/LiPo Dual Charger and have had great success. Using these cells--the trucks are very fast, but not so fast that control is ragged edge. 30 minute or more run time with ZERO overheating issues so far. This may not be what you want if you just have to see that 60 mph speed, but for where we wheel and what we do it's great. I have ordered the heat sink/fan upgrades for ours to increase life span of motors, and yes, we will get the 3 cell fire breather battery's sometime later but for now the 2 cell 7200's are excellent. Now, here is, in my opinion the things you MUST buy....or you will buy after you break stuff and you 100% will break these parts within first 2 full hours of wheeling. Also, we are not hitting huge skatepark ramps or jumping 10 feet in the air. Very normal, but rough playing. Full aluminum shocks. -Reviews are all over the place so I don't have a specific shock to recommend. I saw all the videos saying to replace the shock caps with metal ones because the plastic ones pop off easily, I blasted the top off one of mine in the first 20 minutes. What the YouTube guys don't tell you is--that when you pop the shock cap off, you will forever loose the little speciality rubber O-ring that lives under that plastic cap. Also, something nobody that I've seen on YouTube say is the the little plastic disk that sits under the coil spring to hold it up. IS VERY easily lost during normal ripping around. We've lost 3 of these little disks during the 1st 2 hours wheeling. You can still keep going without it on the shock, but that corner of the truck will sag and the tire will rub the body. So, save the $14 on shock caps and spend $30-$40 on all new shocks straight from the jump & be sure to put lock tite on the screw on bottom part of the shock. RPM 80709 Traxxas Slash 4x4 front and rear A-arms ---Snapped one of my A-arms today around hour number 3. The RPM's are cheap at $22 for all 4 corners, just order them the same time you order your truck and put them on before heading out. If they are good enough for Kevin Talbot they should be ok for you There are other upgrades you can do, like alloy steering knuckles, and alloy drive shafts, but we haven't broken that stuff yet lol. The two things I listed above are must haves though. Lastly, spend the time watching the Lipo education stuff on YouTube, it's really not been as big of a hassle as I feared. Also, be wary of ordering parts from people on YouTube simply because they have a big channel and sell the stuff they are reviewing. Some of these guy MAY NOT actually have the part you want In stock ready to ship the day you buy it, rather they themselves order it & ship it to you after they get it. This stinks when you order something a full week before your next planned wheeling trip & intend to use the part on that trip, Only to hear from that YouTube creator and hobby shop owner that 6 days after you bought the stuff, he's now got it in stock & is about to ship it to you. This stunk to me & I wasn't ready for it. Over all, we are 100% satisfied with our Traxxas Slash 4x4's. They are amazing for what the do and stand up to. Yes parts have broken, but I knew these were weak points going in. I sincerely hope this helps anther person make up his mind. Great little trucks, tons of fun, just plan on spending a minimum of $200+ over the cost of the truck for it to be ready to run, -batteries -charger -extended battery hold down -battery checker -battery bag -lipo wire to Traxxas adapter -cooling fan and heat sink This is a list of all the parts that have failed & I upgraded -shocks (don’t fool with the alloy caps, just get complete shocks -A arms (RPM) -alloy steering knuckle kit -alloy wheel nuts -steel Traxxas cv axles front and rear -belted tire/wheel set ESPECIALLY if you run 3s -revo slipper clutch upgrade kit -hardened steel spur gear -RPM clip less body mount kit -driveshaft cover -replacement Traxxas Velineon motor (partly because I got it super wet & partly because I didn’t change the gearing after swapping the blown out original tires for slightly larger belted ones) -R/C specific tool kit is handy as well as a RC specific nut and bolt kit… Cheers!! ——UPDATE——- After 3 trips out with my son, we have yet to go without breakage. This time it was driveshaft issues….and yes, this was anticipated breakage due to reviews I’ve seen on YouTube and Amazon. I went with the Kevin Talbot recommendation, Traxxas Rear Steel-Spline Constant-Velocity Drive Shafts (2 Piece) And also figured since I was doing this, I would upgrade the stock plastic steering and caster blocks with the Traxxas aluminum ones at an additional $210 per car. Still somewhat happy, but I’m not sure if I wouldn’t recommend that you just go ahead and buy the Slash ultimate from the beginning. ... show more

  • A great ready to run truck out of the box. You just need batteries.
This is the best out of the box ready to run setup. You will however need to buy batteries and a charger. If you purchase Lipo batteries you will need a Dean's adapter. Lipo batteries are the way to go. But do read and know what it takes for special care of those batteries. Now back to the truck. Let's get right to the chase and say this thing is very fast. This truck hooks up in corners and takes a little time to figure out. Cause when it hooks up it flips over! Once you get a few runs in you got it down! The instructions and the get started info included were great. Had a battery charged. So getting the truck running is super quick. Another good thing is that parts are easy to find if you break something. I havent broke anything. But there is tons of aftermarket parts that upgrade the plastic parts. But all in all I like this truck. The only thing I would complain about is if your out in damp grass or dirt. The wheels kick that all up inside the truck body and it covers all the electronics inside. That makes cleanup a bit cumbersome. I use air to clean it out. But I would love to see some kind of plastic mounted in a manner that keeps the electronics clean but still allows for the motor and heat sink to vent. ... show more
