  • It's a keeper but....
The media could not be loaded. ... steel wheels preferred. Might work with certain alloy wheels depending on their design. My initial experience with it was not friendly. No instructions, no rubber pad. For $54 it should have included both. Surprisingly, the price on this design tool runs the range of $40 to $73 elsewhere. First try at this was a big fail because I didn't want that huge iron 1" claw anywhere near my good looking 20 year old steel rims. Tracking down a video online made this look easy with the claw gripping the holes between the "spokes" of the wheel. The claw wasn't long enough for my wheels to do that and get the breaker foot between the rim and the tire. I cut a piece of inner tube to grip the rim as shown in vid. Once I accepted the claw was going to have to go against the rim things went well using a section of rubber inner tube. I recommend using soapy water where the rim meets the tire before starting. I used a popular blue slippery dish washing liquid heavier on the soap for staying power. I used an 8lb maul to drive the foot of the tool between the tire and rim, with some soap of course. A 2lb sledge doesn't work as well. Next, snugged the tool in place by adjusting the claw to grab the rim. That stands the tool up a bit. I was using a 24" torque wrench for leverage and to get an idea how much torque was needed to operate this tool. The the torque wrench "broke" at 10 ft/bs when the bead tool was upright enough to start cranking on the foot to depress the bead. Leaving the torque wrench set at 10 ftlbs, I started turning the wrench 360 degrees in one continuous motion for several rotations and the breaker starting doing its job. It was very easy and while sitting on a small footstool, never broke a sweat at 80 Def F in the shade. The first bead broke easily and using an assist from a tire iron, the breaker did not have to be moved around the tire. Soapy water really helps. The first one was "kinderleicht"-- so easy a child could do it. I was duly impressed. I examined the contact point on the rim where the claw gripped with the inner tube. The rim was NOT MARRED. I flipped the tire over and repeated. Again using soapy water, I cranked the breaker foot just far enough where the bead started breaking, This time the breaker had to be moved to different points on the tire to complete the bead break. Pretty amazing tool Going on to the second tire, the bead breaker nut started to grind and became very stiff to turn. Removing the split pin, nut and washer, I let a thimble full of fresh motor oil dribble into the shaft hold the drive bolt. That fixed it. After a rocky start, I can recommend this tool for use for utility trailer/vehicle type steel wheels. It can be used with certain aluminum wheels. For my use, it's a 4 star item. However, it's only a 2 or 3 star tool because of the alloy wheel limitation. ... show more

  • Works great
The tire bead breaker works great and it's easy to use. It won't work on rimes that do not have any lip to grab onto but works perfectly on the ones that have a lip. I've uses it on several tire sizes, and it does a wonderful job of breaking the bead without any hassle. I have not yet tried it on larger tires like farm tractor tires but I'm sure it will work on the larger tires as well. Very satisfied with it. ... show more

  • Heavy duty and works on plain steel wheels.
This is a solid and heavy steel tire bead breaker tool. Cosmetically mine has welding splatter all over it but it has a thick layer of paint covering the tool's body which helps hide the careless finish. I wouldn't care as this is a competitively priced heavy-duty tool with the same design as other brands. However, the marketing pictures show a clean and nicely painted tool. So function over form is more important in a heavy tool like this. It does work. It works on plain steel wheels. I have trailer wheels with the right lip for it to clamp onto. It absolutely will not work for my clean aluminum-stylized or painted car and suv wheels. All four of my cars have sloped/curved inner spoke areas. Even the marketing picture shows a Buick wheel and it won't work on it if you examine the shot. The clamp requires a lip and will scratch anything it touches as you have to apply clamping pressure that the tool's straight angles will dig into. If you have plain steel wheels, farm tractors, or trailers, where you don't care about scratching then this is one of the best values for this design. ... show more

  • Use only on beat-up steel rims
Yes, the product does break tire beads. However, don't use this on alloy rims or rims with a nice finish. This bead breaker will scratch your rims. If you have alloy rims, the potential is there for scratching the bead surface. As such, I can only recommend this product for use on beat-up steel rims. This product is made from steel and feels solidly built. One of the photos included in the product listing indicates the use of a "heavy duty hook with rubber padding." For me, this was the big selling point because this would help protect the rim from damage. However, there is no rubber on the hook. You will scratch your rims. The bottom line is that this is a functional product, but get it only if you don't care about scratching your rims. ... show more

  • Lacks some finish-work
The concept behind this tool appears sound, and I'm looking forward to using it. Before I can do this, I need to perform some cleanup that should've been done at the factory. Unlike the photos they show us, my unit came with welding "berries" (as we used to call them) all over it. These are basically the molten spatter from welding, which attach themselves to the surface of the steel - sometimes quite solidly. These are usually cleaned off/removed prior to applying a finish to the item (paint, powder coating, chrome plating, etc.). While I'm not overly concerned about these berries all over the tool, a decent sized berry has attached itself INSIDE a hole that the clevis pin is supposed to slide through, preventing the pin from sliding through (see photo w/red circle). For the pricing of this tool, I would've expected better quality control than this. But obviously the factory is in too much of a rush to correct such issues before they're painted over, and shipped off to customers. For this reason alone they are getting the 3-star rating from me. Not only do these welding berries look unfinished, they can affect the usability of the product. I will correct this snafu myself, but it shoulda been done by the folks producing it and NOT by the end user. ... show more

  • Unique
This bead breaker was a little tricky to use at first, but once we figured out how to make it work, tire removal was very easy. Definitely recommend
