First, delivery: I ordered on a Thursday evening and it was delivered Saturday morning. Nice. A fluke due to the fulfillment warehouse for the item being so close. Points anyway. As the product name implies, this is made of true canvas (from cannabis), so it doesn't shrink. Hemp fibers are straight as are flax fibers used to weave duck (from duik, Dutch for linen). I wouldn't recommend cotton since it is not normally shrink-free. The hat is light weight, one reason for my review title. I just don't notice I'm wearing it. If there were one thing I'd change, it is that I would order the TH4 hemp hat for its wider brim. Not a big matter, but a larger brim would offer a bit more shade from the Texas sun. The real reason I'm loving this hat? With sunglasses, the hat set low and the brim shading my eyes, I look really cool. No, I mean it. It's hard for a 70 year old to look cool, but this hat does it. ... show more

2003 I bought my first Tilley T4 cotton hat. I wore it on all of my Missouri float trips which is still going strong, 11 years later. Since living in Florida, the suns heat is far more intense and thought the straw hat would be the way to go. They were ok but nowhere near the comfort of a Tilley. I read here, the hemp hat is lighter, stronger and breathes better. After reading all of these reviews here, I decided to get one. Taking the chance that this one would fit as good as my old one. Luckily it did. The quality Tilley builds into these hats are far above any other hat out there. And I must say as others do, follow Tilley's instructions, as these hats will mold to your head with time and washing them will shrink them down a little. Plus I did try the trick one reviewer wrote about wearing the strap a different way... Tuck the chin strap up in the hat and use the knotted strap to run under your chin then tuck behind the ears and adjust accordingly to your comfort. That method proved itself when one wave at Daytona beach broke over me and the hat stayed on my head! Later that afternoon, I got comfortable and tucked that strap back into my hat and one wave caught me and knocked my hat right off. Lesson learned. LOL. I am so glad I bought this hat. I will never wonder if there's anything out there better. Read the other reviewers words and I must say, I couldn't agree more. ... show more

My favorite hat! Everything has trade offs so I'll try to summarize. Others have addressed all of this so it's just my $0.02... It's a floppy hat, expect the wind to blow the brim around a bit, this allows it to pack flat in my backpack so I'm fine with that trade. I find this isn't an issue most of the time and only annoying in crazy strong wind so it might be an issue if you're in a climate like that. The head strap will stain, they say clearly in the instructions to wash regularly and I don't as much as I probably should so make sure you wash it often if this is going to bother you! They say only gravity should hold this hat on, I respectfully disagree... I don't get it so tight it will give me a headache but I like a little snug out of the box because the fabric does relax a bit and I don't want a gentle jog to toss it off. In any real wind or super heavy activity you'll still need to get one of the straps from the back of your head and put it under your chin. This is really easy and then it's going no where... Larger brim would be better for a lot of sun but people with it say it flops around too much, it would also take a larger backpack to hold it so again it's the trade offs. For me I would never go down to the TH4 and consier this one (the TH5) to be the best compromise. I've added a couple of photos propped up on the bracket of my car awning to show it after a little over a year of full on abuse. This thing has been to several states and countries, from jungles to swamps, forests to deserts, rock walls and even a dip in the pacific ocean. It constantly gets drug around by my 5 year old and 2 year old as well as being dragged on the concrete behind the stroller several times. I got the hemp version for it's durability and the recommendation on the brand from my Canadian friends. What a great hat. Looks better around town than the Airflow hat, which I use for hiking. This Hemp Hat has a great texture, is stiff enough to maintain shape without being too stiff or too floppy. Chin strap hides away easily. The brim is just the right width to offer protection. This hat works perfect for a rainy day or for a sunny day. I keep it in the car for those unexpected times when I need to be outside for a while. The taller crown is not overkill, and it keeps the head a little cooler. Highly recommended. ... show more

The hat sizing is off. I have many hats in 7 3/8 (59 cm) and some in 7 1/4 (58), but the Tilley T5 was way too tight and didn't fit at all. My head measurement is 58.5. The hat looked nice for a hiking, outdoors hat.

Great hat!! Good protection from sun and the fit is perfect (be sure to follow Tilley's sizing instructions and get one size larger than usual. Gravity should hold a hat on and not friction. Not being a regular hat-wearer (other than ball caps) I didn't know what size I wore. Fortunately in my city there is an old-school hat shop that sells Tilley and many other brands. I stopped in and tried on one of the light weight Tilley hats and the sales clerk helped me find my size which was 7 3/8 leaving room for two fingers to comfortably slide into the band at the forehead. However the hat I was interested in was the hemp TH5 with the narrower brim and they only had TH4's with the wider brim. I tried on the TH4 in 7 3/8 and it fit well. So, even though I don't like to shop in a brick-and-mortar establishment and then take my business on-line, in this case they said they could no longer get the TH5 in Mocha only white. So I ordered it from Tilley on Amazon and expected to get the right fit, but what I got was a bit snug. Fits, but no way two fingers fit inside the band. Probably need a 7 1/2. Like the goof I usually am, I had already removed the tags and stuff and wore it around for about an hour to see if I could live with the fit. I probably can, but it is not as comfortable as it would be with a proper, looser fit. I bought it, I de-tagged it, I wore it, I guess I own it now. If I can ever save my pennies for another in 7 1/2 I may as I like the look and utility of the hat. ... show more
