A fantastic device which will only get better

The M15 is my second PoC device (the first one was a Choyong WT2) and I have to say I love it. Why? I got a set of 2 radios for 100 bucks, which is a steal considering what that radio can do for you. Simply put, as long as you are within range of a cell tower with LTE4G you should be good (there could be some exceptions in some countries). You can talk pretty much any distance on the planet, and you will hear a very clear voice from the other side, even if it is on the other side of the globe. This device is a PoC - push-to-talk over cellular meaning that, just like your cellphone, the radio only connects to the local tower, after that you are on the Internet (this is a form of Voice over IP or VOIP). This device is simplex only, meaning that you cannot interrupt the other person, you need to let them finish first least you "step on" on them. Folks used to radios will easily adapt. PoC, however, also requires to change walkie-talkie/radio habits. Since each time your device must open a line, so to speak, to the other person, you should always wait for the the device to show "this device is speaking" (hey, their English is probably better than your Chinese :-) and when you listen to the other side, you must wait until the other person finishes. Most of the time, I would say, you need to press the PTT (push to talk) button on the side, wait about 5 seconds, then speak, then stop, wait 10 seconds or more, and then your interlocutor will reply. This is all very simple and easy, but you must be aware of this. Most PoC manufacturers only allow you to speak to other people with the same device or, at least, brand (this is what Choyong's WT2 does). TIDRADIO did something better - they allow you to create your own group (people you want to speak to) using the Android app Odmaster, which is not the best of the best, but it is solid. You sign up your 2 devices via a QR code, then you create a group, then add your 2 devices to the group which will result in 3 group members: the two devices + one on your smartphone and Odmaster. This is very very neat! The battery life is fantastic, the battery being a huge (but small in size!) 3000mAh capacity which means you can use the device for days. You can recharge the battery by USB-C. One fantastic feature of these amazing devices is that you can update the firmware "over the air" (OTA). Just to to settings, check the version and if you get a message saying a new version is here, just press "yes" and it will update. Very very easy. So who could use those? First, an important caveat - this "radio" is a type of radio, but not a real radio. If the cell towers are down, you are out of luck, you will NEVER contact anybody with that. Not even in the same room with 2 M15s. So there is that. Having said this, Cell towers are very resilient and radios can only reach that far. As for repeaters, they will be overwhelmed in a disaster situation (they can only relay ONE signal at a time). So think that this is a great emergency device. Next, if you don't want to think about range. As I said, if you have cell towers, the range is basically unlimited. Also, if you want to always be able to reach your kids, but don't want them to have a real smartphone, the M15 is the way to go. If you want to reach a lot of contacts at the same time (say on a multi-car trip, or a construction site, or fishing boats) - this is the ideal way to do so as you can make "group calls". Is this device perfect? Alas no. One strange thing is that there is "GPS" printed pretty much where you would expect a GPS/GNSS chip to be. There is none. Apparently, TIDRADIO gave up on the concept. The radio has no official IP rating (that I could locate). Some stores and users claim it has an IP67 rating. I would prefer no ambiguity here. The radio is small, but rather thick. A flatter form would be nicer I think. One weird thing: while TIDRADIO claims that you can put two SIM cards in the device, the first 2 I got had all the signs for two SIM cars, but only one slot to place one it. My next two had two slots. Weird and mildly irritating. One last comment: I yearn for the day when PoC devices will be truly able to speak to each other. Alas, there is no way to connect my Choyong WT2 and my TIDRADIO-TDM15s. I hope that in the future somebody will develop this capability. PoC seems to be an eminently practical and needed technology, and it is only in its infancy, it will only get better in the future. As of right now, I think that TIDRADIO PoC devices (they have MANY!) are the way to go. Bottom line: HIGHLY recommended! ... show more

Decent mid-grade GMRS radio
Right off the bat, I must say that this two-pack of radios with speaker mics and extra batteries is a great value as of the date of this review. Although I have yet to see these batteries sold separately, based on similar batteries, their value alone is more than half the cost of this pack. Add to that the value of the speaker-mics and a programming cable, and you're essentially at the price point of this pack, so it's almost like getting the radios for free. As for the radios, they perform reasonably well, although they can suffer from desense in a high-RF environment from what I understand. This means that if there's a lot of radio interference, these radios may not be able to "hear" incoming signals very well. Where I use them, primarily outdoors and away from the city, they work well for me. There are several features I like about these radios. Not only are they programmed for the standard GMRS and FRS channels 1-22, but they also have programming for GMRS repeater frequencies, and allow for multiple DIY repeater configurations to be programmed. This means that if you regularly use two or more repeaters on the same frequency pair, but with different CTCSS tones, you can have each of them programmed independently. Another feature I like is the "Sync" mode, which allows you to see both the channel name and frequency on screen at the same time. This won't be needed by a lot of users, but for those that use channel names, it's nice to be able to see the frequency too. While I haven't tested the power output, it's rated at 5 watts on high power. Other reports I've seen suggest the actual output is pretty close to what it's rated. My experience with these radios is that they are on par with other 5W radios. I believe these radios are a step above any of the "bubble pack" or "blister pack" radios you can buy on Amazon or in the big box stores. First, the quality seems much better, and the output power is higher than many of those radios. Second, these radios are infinitely more configurable, and can be used with GMRS repeaters, which few, if any, bubble pack radios can do. One thing to keep in mind about bubble pack radios are the wildly exaggerated claims of 10 miles or more of range. The only way to get the kind of range advertised is from mountaintop to mountaintop in very remote areas where there is no other radio interference to speak of. These radios will perform as well or better than any of the bubble pack radios, but don't expect a long range except in the best of conditions. They generally work well where there is a clear line of sight between the radios, or minimal obstructions. Over a small hill, they may work okay, but over a big hill, they almost certainly will not. For GMRS users that want decent short range performance, and may want the ability to use repeaters, I would recommend these radios. I generally recommend them over bubble pack radios for most users. About the only time I'd recommend bubble pack radios is if they will be used only for short range communications where kids are involved. There are a couple of minor issues that I want to mention also. First, the belt clip feels flimsy to me. While I haven't had one fail, there are belt clips for other radios that feel much more substantial. Another issue is that the belt clip attaches to the battery, and not the radio body, and only two belt clips were included (but there are four batteries). I have ordered extra GT-3 belt clips to put on these radios (batteries), as the GT-3 belt clip feels much stronger, and is a little longer, allowing it to be clipped to wider belts than what the TD-H5 belt clip allows. The GT-3 belt clip attaches the same way that the stock one does, so no modifications are needed. Another minor issue is the flap that covers the speaker/mic jacks on the radio opens from the top, and sticks out when a speaker/mic (or programming cable) is plugged in. I believe there are pictures of this on another review on this site. For me it's not a big deal, but it would be nice if it opened from the side instead, so it wouldn't stick out as far. There are some questions about the antennas on these radios. They are held in place with a set screw, and cannot be removed until the set screw is loosened. The fixed antenna requirement is for FRS radios, not GMRS radios, even though both services use most of the same frequencies and can cross-communicate. GMRS radios can be used with upgraded antennas, and these radios provide for that. If upgrading the antenna, you'll want one that has an SMA male connector so it will attach to these radios. Please note that this is different from the "standard" Baofeng UV-5R type of antenna that has an SMA female connector. The last thing I will mention is that these are true GMRS radios, and not FRS radios, so a GMRS license is required to legally transmit with them. Obtaining a GMRS license from the FCC is not terribly difficult (although the website is a little tricky), and not terribly expensive. The FCC license covers the user and the user's immediate family, which is broadly defined by the FCC to include several generations in one family. ... show more

Horrible experience. I purchased 4 TIDRADIO poc Odmaster is needed to program them. Read the manual programed the first radio. Got to the second one, I was blocked and forced to register on the app. I had bought other GMRS radios and didn’t register. When I tried to it locked me out. Going to send them back. ... show more

Good start, not great

They're good for what they are and for the price. I was really excited to get them in, but my group and I never really use them. We work in fairly remote areas, which I understand makes it difficult to get good cell service. I don't blame the company for that. 1 of the 6 I ordered came in and the speaker didn't work. It called out, but couldn't receive. The company sent me a new one, no problem. Customer service is slow, but they're in China, that was to be expected. I took off the 1 star simply due to the firmware needing updates and missing some simple features that will hopefully come soon (ability to see how much data you've used, the way you have to set up groups and friends completely through the app, the way you have to add friends in general the best I can tell is through adding them to a group (just because I'm in a group with someone doesn't mean I want them able to reach me privately), and just a cleaner UI on the radio and the app). Feel like this would have been 3 stars but the good customer service brought it back to 4. I do like their gmrs/ham radios too, fwiw. ... show more

Great product support from the Amazon TID support team

I ordered 8 of the TIDRadios but when they arrived one was still bound to the factory, I guess from pre-shipment testing, and I could not get it to bind with the others and get it registered. I reached out to the TID Radio support team but they said I would have to contact their support team at Amazon which I did by email. They responded the same day with a request for more info on exactly which radio was the problem. I provide them an answer by return email and the next day they told me the problem was resoled and to try again...it it worked perfectly. Very happy with the radios and the support. ... show more

Great product and alt for kids cells

The radios were easy to set up and program. I like the fact that the communication system is closed. This makes a perfect alternative for cellular devices for my kids who aren't responsible enough for a delicate phone. I have been able to communicate over a 200 mile distance without any delay or interference in communication. Battery life last for several days when fully charged. The physical radios perform great and customer service is excellent. That said, the ODmaster app is completely unreliable.
