Just a tiny bit too narrow to fit my lunch containers when there are other items as well (Rubbermaid Brilliance 4.7 cup). Also it slightly exceeds the 18" length limit for personal items on some airlines. While I doubt you would get stopped when using as a personal item for a flight, if an agent wanted to be strict it would not pass the measurement test. I have traveled all over the world with this backpack, carrying my 15/16 inch macbook pro, an ipad, noise canceling headphones, chargers, etc. Despite the tens of thousands of miles of travel, it still looks new today.
