  • This bag does the trick, but it isn't perfect...
I was looking for something that would work well as general purpose backpack for light travel that would have a specific place for my DSLR. The Good: This looks a lot more like a normal backpack than a DSLR bag, which I appreciate. The entire bag is really well-padded. In fact, it's pretty rigid and doesn't collapse like a normal backpack would. It feels almost more like a piece of luggage than a typical backpack. As uncomfortable as that sounds, it is actually the most comfortable and lightest-feeling backpack I've ever owned, probably due to the combination of it being so well-padded and it having extra pads on the back which unweight your upper and lower back a bit. It also comes with a removable waist strap that keeps itself temporarily fastened to the bag via velcro. The strap isn't perfect (see the bad below), but it definitely helps spread the weight of the bag even better making it feel a lot lighter than it really is. The laptop compartment easily fits a 15" laptop (MacBook Pro). It is accessed from a zipper on the side of the bag and is extremely convenient. It has just enough pockets for the minimalist in me. The main storage compartment is relatively small if you keep the DSLR divider in and leaves a little to be desired (see the bad below), but is attached with velcro on three sides so it can be semi-detached and moved out of the way to use the full storage capacity of the backpack. The DSLR compartment is what you'd typically find in most camera bags, although I think the padding is better in this bag than others. It has two main dividers and two smaller dividers that can be arranged by attaching the velcro ends wherever you like. It can be accessed through zipper on the left side of the bag (when it's on your back). The Bad: The main compartment has a divider that separates the DSLR section from the rest of the bag and has velcro attached on three sides. The fourth side is sewn into the bag. I wish it were zippered into the bag so that it could be completely removed. Either that, or Velcro on all four sides would be nice so that you could expand the main storage compartment when you have less camera gear on you. The zipper to access the main compartment only opens from the very top of the bag. I guess this is all you really need to access the contents, but it feels a little awkward. Maybe I'll get used to it over time. The waist strap secures itself to the bag with velcro and is removable, but I can definitely think of times where I might want to keep the strap there and not use it, like, if I'm on a hike with my camera and transitioning from an area where its a more intense hike to an area where I want to quickly grab things from the bag. In those cases, it would be nice to be able to just stow the sides of the strap by tucking them into the sleeve that helps secure it to the bag. You're free to do so, but because there's velcro in the sleeve, it kinda gets stuck on the breathable mesh of the strap, so I probably wouldn't advise it for fear that the mesh will get destroyed by the velcro over time. The other awkward thing about this backpack is really only awkward because of my personal preference to support the bag on my right shoulder if I'm quickly opening it to take out or put stuff back into it. The DSLR zipper is on the left side of the bag, which means if i want to quickly grab or stow my camera, I have to keep it on my left shoulder. Over time I may get used to it, but right now it's a bit of a chore. I wish they made this in "right hand" and "left hand" models with the compartment swapped to either side. The Verdict: I bought this bag because I thought it was going to be simple and functional, and it is, but I feel like it has some usability issues. Some I have solved myself. Like, the fact that the divider separating the DLSR not being completely removable. I ended up just folding it up. It's still a bit annoying, but it gives me a little more space when I don't need to protect my equipment from something light, like my clothes. Other issues will just take me getting used to the bag. ... show more

  • It's worth it
I've been using this backpack daily for 3 years now, and all I have to say is it's the same as the day I got it. I'm not light on this bag at all. It's been hiking with me and seen plenty of dirt and rain, taken a few decent falls (everything inside 100% okay, tons of padding), and been generally thrown around thousands of times at this point. Absolutely nothing on this backpack has changed for me. Every zipper is just as smooth as the day I got it and I can't find a single stitch on the straps that has damage. I was just going through my old amazon purchases and saw that I've had this bag for 3 years now and I figured I should write a review. This bag is absolutely worth buying. I'd been through quite a few cheaper camera bags that always had weird issues, since buying this bag I don't even think about it. I'm quite confident this bag will last me another 7, if not 17 years quite easily. It's rare to find products of this quality made anymore. ... show more

  • Very competent city walkaround bag
First of all, let me say this is a replacement for my Kata 3N1-20 bag which served me well for quite a long time. The reason it needed replacing was it did not have a dedicated laptop pouch and I wanted to try something outside of Kata bag series. What I like: 1) Obviously, it has space for a laptop and a tablet. My 15" MacBook Pro and 12" iPad Pro fit nicely (iPad has a separate pouch inside the laptop compartment). 2) It has two main compartments: a) camera compartment accessible from the side of the bag that houses one DSLR/mirrorless with up to 70-200 F2.8 attached (without lens guard) and space for several lenses and system components on either side of main camera compartment; b) general compartment accessible from the top of the bag that can take one large Thule cable sorter and an assortment of various tidbits needed for daily work (Dji Mavic carryon bag fits into the top compartment). 3) Camera compartment can be removed entirely making this a regular daily backpack. 4) It has a waist strap that helps offload the weight directly to your hips while carrying lots of gear and can be removed. 5) It has large blue zipper loops that can be easily seen in the dark and used even with heavy gloves in the winter. What I dislike: 1) Rain cover is an optional item 2) There is no luggage handle passthrough 3) Material looks quite weak 4) Zippers look quite weak So far, an excellent bag, durability will be tested over time. ... show more
