Bottom line: If you can cut out basic shapes with a portable jigsaw, you can build a great option for comfortably doing what the bears do in the woods! I wanted to give this thing a legitimate and fair field test before reviewing it, so these are my thoughts after a weekend of camping with about a dozen people whom I gave no instruction to. First of all, everybody who visited the potty tent 'got it'. The guys 'stood in the woods', and everybody else got the hint what the bucket of wood chips next to the Throne was about. I pre-seeded the bag in the Throne with them and left the 5-gallon (which was WAY more than needed) chip bucket open beside it, as well as placed biodegradable wipes nearby. There were no unexplained incidences or messes to do with at the end of 3 days, so the insert worked perfectly as intended. After 3 days of use, the stink wasn't even noticeable outside of the tent, and nowhere near the typical outhouse experience inside. At the end, only one bag was used, which I just sealed Throne includes the easy to follow plan and cutout template with it available for download, and included as printed full size with the insert. I downloaded the plan and built it before the insert could even arrive a day or so later, and it all fit together perfectly - though I did have to remove and reinstall my seat with some washers to shim it up above the lip of the insert. Being able to easily customize height in the design is one of the things that makes this DIY approach so great. I went with for as close to the at-home experience as possible. I built my base from 1/2" birch plywood scraps and recycled 3/8" coroplast signboard, and set it up to use a drain hose where a tank isn't needed. So aside from the insert itself, the most expensive part of the build was the seat at $25 and the $13 I spent on 6' of clear vinyl hose. Some leftover polyurethane handled sealing the wood, and old 5 gallon paint buckets are basically free as well. Not bad vs. any other complete composting toilet! I also really appreciate the elongated seat design. I don't understand why anybody ever purchases anything less. So build it! Don't forget bags, wipes, and chips, and do some 'glamping'! (But don't forget to install a bucket or bring a bungee or large rubber band to secure the bag inside of it. ;) ) ... show more

    • Best urine/solids diverter for a composting toilet on the market
I was a little hesitant to spend so much money on a bit of plastic. However, after purchasing one that was 3-D printed, and hopefully uncomfortable, and leaked, I tried this one. The plans that it came with, and the template to cut the hole out for were perfect. I am using a 5 gallon bucket for solids, and a DEF bottle for liquids. I bought the bottle that was suggested, before I discovered that the DEF bottle would work. It is an excellent value for the money, fit perfectly, very easy to use, and easy to install with the included full-sized template. Keeping the solids and liquids separate is a game changer in terms of the number of times that the 5 gallon bucket needs to be swapped out/emptied, there is almost when using peat moss as a cover material for the solids ... show more

    • Well made and a decent size for elongated seats.
We had initially gone with a different brand, but it was quite small. We ended up paying the extra for this one so that we could have an elongated seat and hopefully have to clean it less often. Plastic is sturdy, and seems well built.
