  • Do NOT size down if your head is a “long oval” shape
** INITIAL REVIEW: 2 stars ** (Scroll down to see update.) This helmet is gorgeous and incredibly lightweight, but the advice to size down if you’re on the cusp was 100% wrong for my head shape. My head is 57cm or hat size 7 1/8, and is a “long oval” shape, which means long front to back and narrow side to side. I wear: - a large in women’s hats - a medium in men’s hats - a medium in most bike helmets (Giro, Bell, etc.) - a medium in most motorcycle helmets (Shoei, Arai, etc.) (FWIW, the size medium in the Nutcase Street helmet — a competitor that a lot of people try before shelling out for this Chapter helmet — is too tight on me, and the large is comically big. That helmet just doesn’t work for me at all.) 57 cm is on the cusp between small and medium in most helmets, including this one by Thousand. So following their fit advice as well as that of other reviewers — and against my own better judgment — I sized down to a small in this Chapter helmet. Bad move. :( It pinches my head front to back. Awful pressure points; immediately headache-inducing. It’s a beautiful helmet, but I’m annoyed at the misguided advice to size down. Now I need to exchange it for a different size. Will update my review pending a response from Thousand customer service. ** UPDATE, two weeks later: 5 stars ** Thousand customer service was great. They sent me a medium right from their warehouse in California, and it fits perfectly! Shipping was free. I returned the size small to Amazon. Now that the helmet fits correctly, I’ve explored all the accessories that come in the box. Based on other reviews, I think Thousand has fixed the issue with the magnetic USB tail-light turning on while charging. While I charged mine, only one small LED gently flickered (and then held steady when the charge was full). It certainly wasn’t blinking at full brightness while charging, like reviewers from previous years mentioned. The light does automatically turn on when it magnetically snaps on your helmet. And holy cow is it BRIGHT. I can see how this would be really useful in many cases but annoying in others. I love the pop-lock feature and can easily fit my U-lock through it. I’m convinced that, with MIPS, this is the best helmet on the market. It’s SO pretty and lightweight, it looks cool, it’s super functional, and I love the company’s free replacement policy. I love this helmet! ... show more

  • Function and fashion -- Are bike helmets fashionable?
For years, I had been repeatedly targeted by ads for the Thousand bike helmet, and it's safe to say that their marketing strategy was effective. This helmet not only boasts a sleek and modern design but also lives up to the crucial task of keeping you safe while cycling. I knew it was only a matter of time before I made the decision to invest in one, opting for the real deal rather than a knockoff. When I recently purchased my new ebike, the topic of helmets became a pressing concern for my family, especially since I was consistently cruising at speeds of 28 mph. Safety was a paramount consideration. Thousand helmets had already received multiple recommendations from various articles, and the fact that this particular helmet came with a magnetic tail light, was available in an all-black design, and looked fantastic, made the decision a no-brainer for me. I didn't even have to think twice about it; I knew this was the right choice. I was particularly excited about the novelty of the magnetic hole for my bike lock. However, I quickly realized that my trusty Kryptonite lock was too thick to fit through it. In hindsight, I probably should have realized this just from looking at the images, but it didn't cross my mind at the time. Instead, I've been locking my bike up through the helmet straps, and surprisingly, it works just fine. I'm not entirely sure what someone would do with a helmet they've cut the straps off, but then again, I'm fortunate to live in a relatively safe neighborhood. All in all, I find it quite amusing that I've developed such a deep affection for a bike helmet. While I do wish I could utilize the lock feature, I acknowledge that it's more of a novelty, and the responsibility for not recognizing this limitation in advance falls squarely on me. In the future, I might consider changing locks or getting an additional cable to make use of this feature. However, if you're in the market for a sturdy, safety-conscious helmet with all the bells and whistles, I wholeheartedly recommend getting your hands on a Thousand helmet as soon as possible. It's a stylish and reliable choice that doesn't compromise on safety. ... show more

  • Not dorky, locks up, and she actually wears it — finally, a helmet my wife approves of.
My wife picked this helmet, and for the first time in history, she likes the way a safety device looks. It’s not dorky, it actually fits well, and the MIPS protection gives us peace of mind without looking like she strapped a spaceship to her head. Bonus points for the clever little hole to lock it up — makes leaving it on the bike feel way safer than the usual “hope no one swipes this” scenario. Comfortable, stylish-ish, functional, and actually used — exactly what a helmet should be. ... show more

  • Imperfect but still good.
Color: Racer Black Size: Medium
The helmet is fine, with a few areas of dissatisfaction. It's not as comfortable as I'm accustomed to, with minimal padding on the forehead and elsewhere, and none on the back. The touted magnetic clasp is awkward compared to the spring buckle I'm used to, especially with a beard, and the attachment point of the straps at the back of the helmet creates odd positioning for comfortable adjustment. The straps get easily twisted when putting the helmet on, I'm still tweaking them to avoid having them rest on or dig into my ears, and the adjustment sliders press against the face. The adjustment process has been lengthy and frustrating. My old helmet was far more comfortable, the two anchor points of the straps were both on the sides of the body of the helmet, avoiding weird twisting problems, and attached simply with a buckle that snapped together when one end was pushed into the other. Unfortunately it's way past its recommended life span. With all that being said, I like the basic shape and design of this helmet, the dial tension adjustment on the back works well, and I really appreciate the hole in the side that allows it to be locked with the bike. ... show more
