Magnetic connectors allow kids to attach engines and tenders to other Thomas & Friends trains, vehicles, cargo cars and tenders, and each one is compatible with all Thomas & Friends tracks except wood. For those unaware, Thomas & Friends is going under a new rebrand, these toys have been at the forefront advertising this rebrand, and according to some online, the overall quality has been a bit low... So I wanted to throw my hat into the ringer and see what I'll get. Overall, I'm perfectly ok with the new looks the new engines have, I'm aware its a rather controversial topic so I won't really cover it much, plus to each their own, everyone can have an opinion. What I'm NOT ok with the overall playability and assembly, compared to older James photographed along side this new James he generally feels a bit cheaper, plus he doesn't have some details the older James has like the white on the front or the colored buffer. Something that should've been carried over to the new engines. The newer engines are a lot shorter since they no longer need to fit a long lever as its been replaced with a button to turn on the engines, an overall good change, the levers are a bit jarring. However, along with this change they removed the need for two triple A batteries, now the new engines run on a single triple A battery and IT SHOWS, they run out of juice very fast (both have new batteries in the video from the same brand btw). Another weird and arguably bad change was the change of coupling styple from a hook and loop to a magnetic, unfortunately meaning that if you have older cars or engines they no longer work. But strangely since the older Wooden Railway Engines have magnets they've accidentally become compatible with these new guys. Overall, I like the new style they're running with, love the change to a button instead of lever, and the accidentally compatibility with the wooden trains. BUT, where I'd like to see in improvement is performance, I think Mattel kind of dug themselves in a hole having only one triple A battery to power a motor that is used to two triple A's (all these engines from before and now run on the same motor internally). as well as the change to remove the backwards compatability with the older Motorized Range. Also, be aware that according to some online these engines have some pretty poor quality control if you're unlucky. (like unable to run, level bad) I'd highly recommend doing your own research if you'd like to know more regarding the quality of some of these new toys. ... show more

This James looks amazing, but when he runs it is not at all amazing. For the first few days James had a good speed, couldn’t pull more than one car, but pretty good. Then I really started noticing Today, without him even pulling a train he does not run good. Running side by side with the latest 80th merch this new James barely moves and this is with a new battery. ... show more
