The ProLite Apex has an R-value of 3.8 thanks to StrataCore construction, allowing for comfortable three-season backcountry adventures (R-value measures the material’s ability to insulate; the higher the R-value, the warmer the sleeping pad). Offering the best warmth-to-weight ratio for self-inflating pads, the unique construction uses a continuous layer of thermal foam nestled between alternating ridges of air and foam. The 2-inch thick sleeping pad is built with thermal self-inflating foam; top it off with a few breaths after the foam expands. Equipped with a dependable and rugged WingLock valve, the pad inflates three times faster than a classic valve and features lightning- fast deflation. The ProLite Apex includes a stuff sack to protect the pad when it's packed down. I am 5' 7", 275 lbs, and a side sleeper. This sleeping pad works great. Comfortable enough and just wide enough that I don't feel like I am falling off the edges, even if I'm on my back reading before going to sleep. I wouldn't choose to use it for car camping, since I have the space for a larger, thicker pad in those instances, but when I need to travel light for canoe camping or wilderness trips, this fits the bill. My only complaint is that the valve is not as "one way" as I would like. When I'm trying to get all of the air out of the sleeping pad to roll it up, I can hear and see air coming back into the mat as I'm trying to press air out of it, even thought the twist lock valve is set to deflate. ... show more

I wanted to like this mat. But it really does not provide the level of support as I expected from the description & reviews. What it does do is expands quickly & easily & it is easy to express the air out after usage. (The quick release valve design is great!) It is a bit “noisy” at night. I used this several times in winter, spring & now early summer. I do have to use a moving blanket or other additional padding along with my sleeping bag. With hot weather I don’t use sleeping bag. But having to use additional padding does make it a “warmer” sleep experience. Would not buy again - but perhaps I just had too high expectation for padding level. I go on one backpacking trip a year and I spend a few weeks every winter sleeping in my car for ski season so I know a little bit about camping pads. I am replacing an original thermarest classic I got from my parents when I was in middle school, those things last forever. I wanted a little more comfort so I got this one because it is cheaper than the neo xlite but has a nice trade off of weight and warmth. I love how comfortable it is and how easy it is to use the valve. The fabric is pretty slippery so I wonder if I will have issues sliding off of it but it is very quiet. It does seem pretty durable and I think it will be easy to clean. The pad when stored is a little bulkier than I thought it would be and can be hard to roll up really compactly but I will probably get better at that with practice. The stuff sack has compression straps but they don't really make it that much smaller. I knew what I was getting though so that doesn't knock a star off for me. I may update this review after car camping on it for the winter, but so far I am happy with it and excited for some winter camping. ... show more

One of the challenges of hiking is the ability to get a good night's rest. A great sleeping air pad is essential however generally the more comfortable it is, the larger it is. The prolite was a great balance between size and comfort. However what I like most is that it is durable. I've had sleeping pads that only last a few hikes, however the prolite has lasted 30 nights already for me and doesn't appear to be wearing. ... show more

    • Sleeping bag zipper punctured this pad?

Was losing air noticeably after a few minutes of laying on the pad on second day of use. First day was fine. I submerged the pad in water to find the source of the leak and found a small hole near the head of the pad. There is a small zipper on my mummy bag right about there, and this was most likely the cause of the puncture. That said, if a bag zipper can puncture this thing, what exactly is the point? I ordered a replacement and next time I will be sure to lay a blanket or small tarp between this pad and my bag. Of course that means I now need to carry more weight in my pack, not ideal. It is comfortable and warm enough to warrant its 3.8 R rating. For 118 bucks with tax I would expect it to be durable enough not to be punctured by a zipper on a sleeping bag of all things, basically what it designed to be used with. I doubt this thing would last a single night on rough ground even inside a tent, but I will give it another chance and I guess be more careful with it? Not that I should have to but, whatever. ... show more
