Description

Theory and Practice of Additive ManufacturingDiscover the ins and outs of additive manufacturing in this student-friendly textbookAlso known as 3D printing, additive manufacturing is a process by which layers of material are added to create three-dimensional objects guided by a digital model. It has revolutionized the design and manufacture of customized products, facilitating the rapid, flexible production of a huge range of goods. It promises to revolutionize manufacturing engineering, shorten industrial supply chains, and more. Theory and Practice of Additive Manufacturing provides the first introduction to this subject designed specifically for students. Balancing the underlying theories behind additive manufacturing with concrete applications, it guides readers through basic processes, essential tools and materials, and more. The result is ideal for readers looking to bring additive manufacturing to bear on engineering or industry careers of almost any kind. Theory and Practice of Additive Manufacturing features: Over 100 worked-out example problemsDetailed discussion of the emerging digital tools including mechanistic modeling, machine learning, and moreCommitment to pedagogy and reinforcement geared toward student learning outcomesTheory and Practice of Additive Manufacturing is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students and instructors in introductory additive manufacturing courses, as well as practicing engineers and researchers working in industries that use additive manufacturing technologies, including aerospace, automotive, and consumer goods. • Great reference book or textbook for everyone interested in AM !
Format: Hardcover
This book is a great reference source for working engineers and scientists in additive manufacturing (AM) and is a must-have as a unique textbook for courses on AM. If you are teaching or taking a course in AM using this book, you will appreciate the learning objectives at the start of each chapter and the real-world problems with solutions spread throughout the book. It is well-written by exceptionally qualified authors and is comprehensive in its coverage of key AM topics. Initial chapters involve processes and feedstock for AM of metal/alloy, polymer and ceramic materials, before a review of design and sensing/control for AM and an examination of heat and mass transfer. Subsequent chapters describe microstructure and its control, review mechanical properties, and explain common defects in AM components. The origins and measurement of residual stresses and distortion in AM components are explained quantitatively followed by a review of modeling of AM using mechanistic models and machine learning methods. The book culminates with chapters on safety and future trends. I recommend this book to all who work, or want to work, in the AM industry. I believe that everyone will find it to be a valuable resource. ... show more

  • Outstanding textbook for teaching and learning of additive manufacturing
Format: Kindle
As an instructor of a major additive manufacturing course taught to undergraduate seniors, M.S., and Ph.D. students, I had been looking for a good textbook to use for teaching. There are many good books, but the majority of those books cover a limited number of aspects essential to additive manufacturing. This is an understandable situation as additive manufacturing is a complex interdisciplinary field, making it very challenging for a book to cover all the critical aspects in a balanced manner. The book by Mukherjee and DebRoy, two of the most prolific and well-cited authors in the field, has done a phenomenal job in addressing this challenging task. Just a quick glance at the table of contents reveals the comprehensive scope of the book with topics including feedstocks, processes, part design, sensing, process control, heat transfer, microstructure development, mechanical properties, defect formation, residual stresses, safety, sustainability, and economic issues. Moreover, the book has many outstanding attributes that make it specifically suitable for teaching. • Each chapter starts with the learning objectives and ends with the takeaways; these are powerful learning aids. • There are almost 120 worked-out examples, which are placed throughout the book. These worked-out examples are very valuable to help a reader to "actively" think rather than "passively" read. An added benefit for me as an instructor is that the examples are helpful to come up with exam questions :-) • The coverage of the theory and practice of additive manufacturing is remarkably well done. Oftentimes, the theories are presented too deeply, which can overwhelm a reader from understanding the important fundamentals. This book includes enough theoretical contents and connects those to the practice applications. Lastly, in addition to serving as a valuable textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, the book will be a useful reference to practicing engineers and researchers. ... show more

The book provides an overview of the fundamental procedures, equipment, and materials utilized in additive manufacturing. It emphasizes the evolution of microstructure, properties, defects, and residual stresses. This textbook stands out for its practical emphasis, which includes more than 100 solved example problems. It also includes new digital tools such as mechanistic modeling, machine learning, and digital twin to keep readers up to date on the latest advancements in the industry. The book is a great resource for students of all levels because it takes a strong educational strategy and uses exercises, review questions, and examples to reinforce important topics. ... show more
