The coins are replacements or upgrades for the tiny cardboard pogs you get with the game. It’s not even an option really- if you play Old World you deserve to toss out those pogs. After purchasing the game we absolutely had to have these little metal coins to complete the game play experience. The cad board coins that come in the game itself are "okay", but these coins feel and sound great while playing. We're REALLY happy we made this purchase.

I stayed away from these for awhile because they are pricey for 30 coins. Bought on a recent sale and it’s actually 36 coins. They really need to change that description. I can’t be the only one that didn’t buy them because of the amount stated.
