Description

Sometimes life has other plans…Sara Bovitz knew how lucky she was — a fulfilling career as a physician, two beautiful children at home, a husband she adored who was the family’s center of gravity — she was complete. Until the wheels came off. When her husband JJ dies after a long battle with brain cancer, it is 3:30 in the morning and a record-breaking blizzard rages outside. By sunrise the city is paralyzed, entombed in 15 inches of snow, and the world has stopped on its axis. But the storm is just beginning for Sara and her two young sons as they struggle to forge a path through their grief. Her qualifications as a doctor are useless, her skills as an only-parent are embryonic, and she knows nothing about the anatomy of a correctly made PB&J sandwich. The Tricycle offers an intimate portrait of heartbreak, told with humility and humor, as Sara learns what it means to reimagine their lives. It is a powerful reminder that there is light even in your darkest moments, and will leave you rooting for Sara and her boys long after you read the last page. Read more

  • Deeply honest and brilliant debut
This is the most emotionally engaging book I have read in a very long time. I sat down to read for few minutes, and ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. This is a book about grief that has some deeply sad moments (have a box of tissues nearby), but also moments of joy and laugh-out-loud humor. The author’s casual and open writing style welcomes the reader into her life, and her descriptive powers are such that I felt I was there with her through so much of her journey. This is a remarkable first book, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. ... show more

  • An Outstanding Memoir of Loss, Grief, Love, and Hope
This is powerfully evocative and finely crafted story of loss, grief, love, and, ultimately, hope. Sara Harkness Bovitz is a gifted narrator and sensitive -- and vulnerable -- guide through her grief over a tremendous loss, and her pathway toward recovery and renewed hope. Told with great pathos but also a healthy dose of humor and humility, "The Tricycle" is not only a memoir of loss and resilience; it is also a deeply engaging lesson in humanity. This should be read along side other notable memoirs of loss, including Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking," Joyce Carol Oates's "A Widow's Story," Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "Notes on Grief," among many other classics. ... show more

  • Please share this book widely - it is an expression of great love and beauty!
Dr. Sara Harkness Bovitz has done an astonishing job of knitting together the corresponding joys and sorrows of love and its expression after loss- Grief. Sara will take you from the hospital bed in their living room to the dusty hills of Guatemala and back again repeatedly, each page full of a rare and aching beauty— the whisper of her beloved JJ throughout, shepherding and expressing the zest he was so known for. May this extraordinary book amplify healing for all of us relating to a loss or anticipating one— in other words all of us. ... show more

  • 10/10 ♥️
The Tricycle is an intimate journey through life and loss, grief and beauty . Sara shares a beautiful end-of-life journey, one that we could all only hope for in our last days. Her gift for portraying grief, and loss while maintaining a thread of connection is truly remarkable. She keeps humor alive, providing moments of lightness amidst. She shares the experience and challenges of mother of two faced with grief. As someone who experienced the loss of a father in childhood, The Tricycle was a healing journey for me. Sara’s perspective as a mother provided a new lens through which to view my own mother’s grief, offering insights and understanding that I hadn't explored before. This book is a testament to the transformative power of storytelling and the human spirit to find hope, love, connection, and resilience in the face of the complexity of life. ... show more

  • Moving book
As the title says, this was an extremely moving book. Initially, I intended to read some before I went to bed. I stayed up well past my bedtime finishing it because it couldn’t be put down. The book has a tragic premise and devastating subject matter, yet it is never not captivating. It captures grief in its sadness, but also in its healing. Reminds me a lot of Joan Didion’s “the year of magical thinking”, a true compliment. ... show more

  • Love, living and loss
The author vividly tells the true story of an entire lifetime of love, living and loss compressed into the two decades she experienced with her beloved late husband, and how she and their two sons learn to survive his death. There are huge highs, heartbreaking lows and all the beautiful and sometimes hilarious stuff in between. Anyone struggling to cope with grief will find something in it that resonates with them. • Everyone should read this! I wish I understood this long ago.
Anyone who has felt loss or, just as important, been close to someone hurting (as I have), will learn from this book. It’s not complicated, it’s just real. What the author describes as “dysfunction around grief” and the. offers ways to address helped me in ways I didn’t expect. The story takes place in the Pacific NW which I love but could be anywhere and anytime. What a story. What a life. What a book. ... show more
