  • For building formidible strength
Format: Paperback
Josh Bryant and Adam BenShea have extended the prison strength books series with an excellent addition. They found champion strong men (inmates Angelo White of Crips, Dorian Yates, Tyson Hughes, George Christie, Cory Matthews and others and guards Mike Knight, Garry Frank and others) who have actually spent time behind bars and interviewed them to determine just what about prison workouts enabled them to grow big and strong. They merged the answers into a series of workouts and suggestions that worked. These men "built a physique that screams alpha male physical prowess, and drips with masculine virility." (page 1) These men built, not huge biceps and narrow waists, but "neck, traps, forearms and your back (the places where workout-hardened muscles coil into combat-ready weapons)." (page 1) These men not only were extremely strong, but appeared formidable. The book includes pictures to prove this. Reference is made several times to the California Youth Authority which the authors state helped many young gang members grow big. The change in Mike Tyson's physique from before and after his 3 years in prison is discussed. The workouts included are built on basic exercises: squat, overhead press, bench press and deadlift with lots of both body weight and free weight additions. These are not fancy workouts, but very focused workouts. The programs are explicit and well laid out. The suggestions for mixing it up with carefully chosen additions and approaches are excellent. Included, among other suggestions are several: 20 minute challenges, "month in the hole" reverse pyramids, 100 rep pyramids, deck of pain, Juaraez Valley workouts, tabatas, extreme circuits, burpee challenge, rest-pause lifting. The sections on the various body parts development are outstanding, straight forward. The emphasis is on consistency and progressions of both body weight exercises and adding weights to the bar. The weights are heavy. The reps are both high and low counts. The sets are numerous. All as befits muscle growth for size and strength, the goals of the program. There are brief discussions of the 4 major body weapons - two knees and two elbows - and their use. Diet is DE-emphasised as the inmates had no control. The times and contents of the meals were uniform and consistent, which the authors state is important. The authors repeatedly state this is not a book for body builders, who want to compete in the body building competitions, (Who are carefully not dissed, but differentiated.). This book is for "building physical armor to show that you have prepared your body for the realities of no rules combat." (page 1) So, if you want to be really strong, and look really formidable, this is the go-to book. ... show more

  • This book GETS it.
Format: Paperback
Calisthenics and prison fitness books can be a gamble. Some of them focus on the health benefits applied to daily civilian life, and some of them are essentially just describing a different flavor of bodybuilding. But this book just GETS it. Convicts don't get in shape to be healthier or look better, though those are absolutely side benefits. They get in shape in order to sharpen their claws and survive in a harsh and brutal environment. Josh Bryant takes this mindset of primitive no-frills fitness focused solely around building strength, and he really runs with it. It really is put best in the first page of this book, "Like a knight putting on his armor for battle, you must build physical armor to show that you have prepared your body for the realities of no-rules combat." Lots of great information in here about everything prison fitness related, with some excerpts and wisdom taken from some of the most (in)famous ex-cons, gang leaders, and prison fitness enthusiasts in the modern era. The real meat of the book are the two different regimens available, one focused mainly around calisthenics and the other around barbell training. Some excellent bonuses in this book that are hard to find anywhere else are the chapters on building neck strength and learning the basics of the martial art of Jailhouse Rock by using the movements as interval training. I also greatly enjoyed the brief history of how prison fitness actually came to exist, and when the image of the jacked-up inmate entered public view. All that been said, there's two big quips I have with this book. Not enough to detract a star, though. The first is that there is no real table of contents at the beginning of the book. Granted it's not really long, but being able to know which page the certain routines are on would really help. The second is that the book, dimensions-wise, is kind of big and awkward and clumsy, which not only makes it less portable, but blows up the images and makes them look blurry and low-quality. The actual binding and publication is fine, I just wish that the book was smaller so it could be carried around in a backpack better, and maybe have a table of contents at the start so I could know which page to flip to for what day of exercise. All-in-all, this is absolutely a staple fitness book, and a must-buy if you're at all interested in the subject. If you want to build intense and focused physical strength using a minimal amount of equipment, where the sole goal is to sculpt and weaponize your body using grueling, time-tested workouts endorsed by the baddest of the bad, buy this book! ... show more

  • Sleep leads to the greatest recovery and muscular growth
Format: Kindle
Their is no surprise I’m a huge fan of Josh Bryant’s work. Josh Bryant is dedicated to providing athletes all the tools they need to get to the next level. At the young age of 22 years old, Josh was the youngest person in powerlifting history to bench 600 pounds raw. Through Joshstrength, Josh has trained numerous powerlifters with astounding breaking numbers. When Josh speaks you listen. Jailhouse Strong is a training book by Josh Bryant and Adam benShea. Josh and Adam cover the topics as why prisoners get strong an lean. This book covers functional strength training for people with limited resources (behind bars). The book offers body weight routines along with its progressions. The authors also dive into barbell training, and different ways of avoiding sticking points (Rest-Pause Method, Frequency etc). Josh and Adam lay out numerous programs for people to try. Its all laid out for you and offers substitutions of exercises if needed. Topics you will learn: You can get big and strong anywhere with limited resources. Rest! Sleep leads to the greatest recovery and muscular growth. Prisoners get plenty of rest, this not only helps their muscle repair but keeps them mentally sharp. Importance of motivation. These guys push themselves day in and day out, always striving to be better then before. Get excited about training! Increased Frequency of Training. Josh and Adam talk about the importance of training frequency and why deloads are needed to repair our CNS. Stick to basic training. Nowadays too many coaches try to find the new “fad”, stick to the basics and constantly push yourself and you will see results. Big compound lifts=Big results. The book is no non-sense attitude, with a focus on progression, strength and frequency. You will find many written programs of strength, arm specialization, circuits, body weight training etc. This is a great book for anyone looking for functional strength, mass or someone with limited resources. • Loved it
Format: Kindle
I thought this book was very unique...told from a very unique perspective, blending calisthenics, weight training, hiit combat based cardio with a very insightful prison perspective. I found the book to be refreshing. And I loved the chapter on the neck training as this is not a well covered topic in most training books, and yet, it is one of the most important for injury prevention. It also included some really good splits for getting big and some really unique calisthenics workouts. I rarely take the time to write reviews at all,let alone detailed reviews. But this was a good and engaging read. Glad I added this to my library. You should too. ... show more

  • No nonsense, all go
Format: Paperback
This book doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, if you’re an intermediate trainee or beyond you’re not likely to learn any exotic movements you don’t already know of, and that’s not the point here...if you’re a beginner this will definitely instill a proper knowledge of the tried and true exercises you will need throughout your training journey. If you are partial to or limited to calisthenics there’s plenty of (authentic) prison style routines to implement, if you prefer and have access to a barbell and some heavy iron and a rack/bench you will have plenty to sink your teeth into as well, if you’re like me and are fond of both this is a gem. The genius is in the programming, its simple but comprehensive all at once, and tailored for long term gains as much as it is for getting strong and jacked and in condition as quickly as possible (like a prisoner would need to for survival). It also leaves a lot of room for custom tailoring your routines and schedules for YOUR goals and needs. If you like learning about a lil iron game history that doesn’t usually get a spotlight you’ll learn some of that here and personally I enjoyed it (and always do). I think the only real criticism I could give it is the description of Hindu Squats...it’s either inaccurate or just a poor description (shrug, nothing a lil google or YouTube search couldn’t remedy). A truly awesome book in the physical culture realm that will serve the raw beginner all the way up to the hardcore seasoned trainee. I would definitely recommend to anyone ... show more

  • The foundation of civilization is property rights.
Format: Paperback
Civilization's place or those accused or convicted of a crime is jail. Jail is a place of confinement where all property has been taken from the prisoner, where to the outside world one has little to no control of one's life. Josh Bryant and Adam benShea have written a book that in a practical manner supports just the opposite can be true. One may be relinquished to 8 foot cell, but even in such a confined space there is so much potential if one has the proper mindset. This guide will outfit anyone with the desire to become strong to accomplish just that. The secret is to know that a life is not limited to one's environment: in this case an 8 foot cell, but to a far smaller area, the 8 inches between your ears-if one can control their mindset they can accomplish anything. If you desire to be strong with the application of this book you will do just that. One of the best things someone can do for another is to save them of their most vital resource: time. Whether you are headed off to serve 2-4 in an 8x10 in the next couple weeks or just wanting to get after that new years resolution Bryant and benShea deliver a simple time tested system to prepare in the most efficient way possible to grow stronger using simple exercise routines which are based off the combined knowledge of men's need to survive. On a lighter note I enjoy the masculine style of their writing, which to read in 2014 is enjoyable. This book's subject matter is certainly unique and it is delivered with a lot character which demands attention for it's graceful dance the authors use to illustrate the realities a convict faces and general prison lifestyle paired with the fascinating subject matter guidebook of jail house fitness and strength building. If you are a "fish" (in jail house speak: a new inmate, or a reader with no training regimen) or a lifting professional there are simple to implement workouts within to help get you and your routine started immediately. ... show more

  • A lot of meat and fat to this book.
Format: Kindle
The routines and techniques are solid, innovative and look to be effective. The background information on the prisoners was interesting but seemed like fan worship too often. These prisoners were murderers and criminals responsible for causing a lot of pain in the world. They shouldn't be admired for any reason. Finally, the author's prose was often superfluous. I read the book for the workouts not to read how these workouts will "grow slabs of muscular beef on my neck and traps that would make any hardened gang member in the yard stop and think twice before asking me to 'drop the soap' in the Soledad Valley State Men's Correctional Institute." It was stuff like that which added fat to an otherwise lean read. ... show more

  • Great Stuff From An Impressive Coach
Format: Paperback
Jailhouse Strong is a straightforward, no crap kind of book. It is easy and quick to read and contains a wealth of knowledge that is applicable to every reader, regardless of fitness level. This is not a scholarly written publication. There are typos and grammatical errors, but do not let that put you off from the genius in this book. This is real life, practical fitness that fits any schedule and any set of needs. I am a competitive powerlifter, but also have a work/life schedule that often cuts into my training. I was able to take notes from this book and apply it to my training to make the most out of my longer workouts, optimize my workouts when on a time crunch, and find ways to exercise even when life keeps me from getting into the gym. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Also, follow Josh on YouTube and Instagram. I did after reading this book, and the sheer amount of free material he puts out is staggering. So far I have read 4 of Josh's books, watched countless YouTubes videos on his channel, and can honestly say I have benefitted greatly as an athlete from doing so. ... show more
