Description

Evan Jones, a child orphan who, for years, was shifted from one foster home to another is now a disaffected college student living with his wealthy boyfriend, Chris. Their social and financial disparities have made their relationship increasingly volatile despite their mutual love for one another. While sifting through old relics at an elderly man's yard sale, Evan finds an 8mm movie camera. The man offers to teach Evan how to use it if he comes back the following week. Upon returning, Evan meets the man's 43-year-old son, Peter. They strike up a conversation and Peter gives him reels of old 8mm movies that are collecting dust in the garage. The home movies, featuring a young Peter and his boyhood friend touch a nerve with Evan. Their youthful flirtations and tenderness are uncomplicated and pure. Evan begins to live vicariously through the home movies and his friendship with Peter soon turns romantic. Evan's relationship with his boyfriend Chris splinters as he pushes for greater understanding of himself and the notions of family, love and fulfillment. Review When this delicate story, about an orphan finding himself, mixes home movies, water footage, hypnotic voice-over and a beautiful score, it's transcendent. --San Francisco Chronicle Lyrical and lovely. --San Francisco Weekly A cinema gem. --Beyond Chron

  • Awesome. Despite the negative reviews, this is a dreamy movie, and so very real, and it swept me away. Very deep!
This is an awesome and very deep movie, that takes you away! I read negative reviews about this movie, and hesitated to purchase it. But I bought it anyways, and watched it with low expectations. Sure enough, the movie swept me away. The main character overwhelmed me with his beauty, and his desperate need to find his direction in life. He was rejected, lost, alone, and trying to find meaning. A lot of people are in the same mess. I am very close to this state, so I can appreciate the movie. Many people that gave this movie negative reviews, can't imagine the feeling, nor can they associate with this movie, and gave it a negative review. So, in the end, what do they know? The movie allowed me to associate myself with his past life and his feelings. I felt for him. The music, "Barcelona" by RLMDL, was so dreamy, and perfect for this movie. It added to the movie, and I give the song writers and producers credit, for allowing the music to support the movie. That is a positive star for the movie, and, as it should be. It takes everything to make the movie what it is, not just good acting, or a good story line, but everything. Don't go entirely by the negative reviews. Watch it for yourself, and judge it accordingly. The movie is worth giving it a chance. I loved it, and rate it 6 out of 5 stars. I related to this movie so deeply. People that already have established lives, will find it hard to relate. And thus, the negative reviews. Simply because they don't understand what it is like to be so lost in this life. pity, that they don't understand, and a deep lack of compassion and understanding. Movie is highly recommended. ... show more

  • Nice movie
This was not at all a bad movie. I enjoyed it. My only negative comment would be his constant hair playing. His hands were in his hair the entire movie. I had always wanted to see it. Especially after knowing the main character in this film (Harry Hains) passed away a year ago. So I finally ordered it. His character struggled to belong. Heartbreakingly sad Harry struggled in real life with mental illness and addiction and an overdose took his young life. He was a beautiful young man. Condolences to his family. ... show more

  • NOT RECOMMENDED...
UNFORTUNATELY, this movie attempts to trace a self-centered and clueless, almost cruel, path of a young, orphan gay youth who's every move, every action, every thought is a self-serving attempt to fulfill his loosely defined interests... (with almost no consideration for anyone else)! The script does not follow any sort of structured plot or story and definitely does not lead to any sort of climatic catharsis (not even through the selfish actions of the protagonist...) The acting is at best average and quite often bad; the direction is all over the map and the script fails to offer any sort of climatic dramaturgy - only mere segments of a story which never comes together to offer an organic and satisfying ending... I think the filmmaker(s) and actors tried to do their best, however, they were doomed from the very beginning due to the unworthy script... I would not recommend this movie (in any form, not even as a rental - it was a total wast of money and time)... ... show more

  • an Ariztical surprise
Having long expected that most anything out of Ariztical will be low class, cheap, high schoolish, The Surface was an amazing surprise. Well written, threading through several sub plots through the main plot. Good acting. Well done, a good addition to my collection. Keep it up Ariztical.

  • Well Worth Watching
This must be a movie you either love or hate, given the one star review I just saw. I personally thought the story-line was interesting and unusual: an orphan searching for a sense of family as he has no family history of his own whatsoever. It also focuses on relationships - some shallow, some with the prospect of becoming meaningful.I recommend you see the firm for yourself and form your own opinion. I'd certainly watch it again sometime. ... show more
