  • Exceeded my expectations. Excellent book!
Format: Paperback
This book stands out. I’m a voracious reader of all things holiday folklore and mythology and this book is by far my favorite. It’s comprehensive, yet doesn’t drag on. It’s detailed but not dry and overly academic. It’s interesting, engaging and easy to follow without dumbing the story down for the reader. It’s like you’re having a conversation with the author. There are the basics of holiday lore that everyone has heard of like Krampus, Frau Perchta, Mari Lwyd, Gryla, the Yule Cat, Belsnickel, La Befana….all the ones you’re probably familiar with. However, there are 50 spooky tales, legends, ghosties and ghouls from all over the world in this book! Many were completely new to me and others I’d heard just bit and pieces about. Absolutely fascinating! I devoured this book in a night. I can’t recommend this book enough. This needs to be in your collection if this sort of thing is your jam. I honestly had pretty low expectations when I ordered this book because I’ve read so many books like this, but I’m delighted to admit I was wrong this time. This is a keeper! Get it! ... show more

  • Highly recommend
Format: Paperback
The sarcasm and the way the author describes the stories is fantastic, if you love dark humor, folklore, and the holidays this is a fantastic read.

  • A mix of character guide and sample stories
Format: Kindle
This book is a mix of character guide and sample stories and a few of the beings are not covered in an in depth fashion in general encyclopedias on Christmas. The book starts with an entry on Saint Nicholas of Bari, there is bio info that includes his supposedly performing an exorcism, followed by a particularly gruesome story that is covered in other books but this book gives a few variants of that story. By this late date, Krampus, Frau Perchta, and Knecht Ruprecht would be well known, especially Krampus. Not so well known are Frau Goude, Turst, Stuggele, Polzmartel, Bloody Thomas, Schutlie and Santa Kuroshi. Indeed, I opted to look them up in The Christmas Encyclopedia and there is either very little on these beings or they are not in that book at all. Clearly this book's author did a lot of research. There is also info on little known festival practices that are covered in a witty style. The book covers December lore in general, not just Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The pics are all in color. Because I have the e book edition and not the paper one, it is harder for me to tell what media was used, it looks like an AI program was employed, which is not a bad thing, for sure the pics are spooky. Informative with a lot of little known lore. ... show more

  • Would prefer a hardcover
Format: Paperback
Good book I would prefer if it had come in a hard cover though.

  • don't need to sleep with a light on
Format: Paperback
Sadly not scarey enough to be considered scary stories. Scarey Stories to Tell in the Dark are much better. The stories are more comical then anything. The illustrations are nice though
