  • Great movie
Great movie. Look, I love horror movies and don’t analyze the hell out of them, they’re entertainment. This was entertaining, acting was good, and overall, was creepy as hell.

  • Solid horror thriller, good pacing, tight plot
The Rental (2020), an American horror film that written, produced and directed by Dave Franco, in his feature directorial debut. Movie is about two couples who rent a cliffside vacation home overlooking the Pacific. A nicely furnished, beautiful, remote house, the four were hoping to have a great getaway. We meet Charlie (Dan Stevens), a hardworking executive of some sort, his supportive wife Michelle (Alison Brie), Charlie's brother Josh (Jeremy Allen White), not a powerful executive and still trying to get his life back on track after an anger management issue landed him some time in jail, also feeling he isn't adequate enough for his girlfriend Mina (Sheila Vand), who the other two recognize as being quite a catch though assuring Josh he is good enough. Mina works with Charlie and both Josh and Michelle recognize those share a work related bond they can't share with them. Still. No one thinks anyone is cheating, though the narrative pieces are all there, as are other issues that play into the story. After dealing with a mildly creepy, bit racist owner/caretaker named Taylor (Toby Huss), the couple's settle in to enjoy a nice weekend. Except they don't. It starts off nicely enough, but ends really really badly as someone is watching them, toying with them, and then comes after them. There is a lot of set up to make the audience think it is one person. Only is it, or is it just this person? I liked it. Good casting, acting, pacing. Slow burn but I was never bored. The character drama was believable and was relevant to the horror. There was a thread with Taylor being racist that seemed more statementy at first but no it does play into the story later, so it wasn't extra (Mina is of Middle Eastern ancestry). Everything mattered, whether unspoken beliefs by Michelle and Josh that maybe Mina and Charlie were getting together to Josh's anger management issues to Mina's anger at Taylor's racism. All relevant. Also a nice twist at the end. Good effort. ... show more

  • Terrifying 😱
This film is the reason why I will never rent someone else’s house or apartment during a vacation!! Give me a good old fashioned hotel room any day!! 🦇💩 crazy!

  • Decent suspense but great overall movie!
This movie is a great example of horror filmmaking with drama and thriller film fans in mind. The characters are flawed but likable or at the very least relatable. The cinematography is well done and overall good story kept simple. My only issue which isn't even a major issue is I would have liked for the writing to have dragged out the interrelationship infighting a bit more. I think the writing definitely wrung out a bit more suspense, action and dread in those final scenes. Overall, I think this is worth watching again and again. Great cast and very promising director! If you truly love horror movies and aren't those people that watch 80's horror movies just to say how cheesy they are(my opinion they're not..well sometimes) then this one's for you! ... show more

  • Yeah.....I’ll pass. Thanks for trying, though!
Wow. I was SO excited to finally have the opportunity to see this film, after having read so much about it. I was REALLY hoping that I would be sitting here, writing a review about how utterly KICKing this movie was, but the sad truth is, that I REALLY didn’t like it. Don’t get me wrong; some of the scenes were well-played with decent suspense, but the ENTIRE story didn’t matter....not one little iota. There is ZERO info on the killer, ZERO info as far as possible motives, and one of the most boring, uneventful, PLAYED-OUT endings that I have ever seen. When the movie ends, you say to yourself, HUH? WHAT? IS THAT IT?!? Yeah, one of those. I’m quite sure the writer and director were patting themselves on the back, congratulating themselves on how UNEXPECTED and EDGY their finale was, but the rest of us? We are sitting there screaming “You have to be KIDDING ME!!” It’s a TIME WASTER....nothing more. HARD PASS on this one...and a darn shame. ... show more
