Description

“No one mixes romance, mystery, and that faint, spine-tingling sense of the supernatural, that curtain lifting in a breeze that isn't there, the hair prickling on the back of your neck, like Simone St. James. Her novels are the perfect combination of classic ghost story, historical fiction, and romantic suspense.”—Lauren Willig London, 1925. Glamorous medium Gloria Sutter made her fortune helping the bereaved contact loved ones killed during the Great War. Now she's been murdered at one of her own séances, after leaving a message requesting the help of her former friend and sole rival, Ellie Winter. Ellie doesn't contact the dead—at least, not anymore. She specializes in miraculously finding lost items. Still, she can't refuse the final request of the only other true psychic she has known. Now Ellie must delve into Gloria's secrets and plunge back into the world of hucksters, lowlifes, and fakes. Worse, she cannot shake the attentions of handsome James Hawley, a damaged war veteran who has dedicated himself to debunking psychics. As Ellie and James uncover the sinister mysteries of Gloria's life and death, Ellie is tormented by nightmarish visions that herald the grisly murders of those in Gloria's circle. And as Ellie’s uneasy partnership with James turns dangerously intimate, an insidious evil force begins to undermine their quest for clues, a force determined to bury the truth, and whoever seeks to expose it... • Fun Mystery
The Other Side of Midnight is the first supernatural historical mystery that I have read, and I am hooked. I had never enjoyed any kind of historical read until now. Simone St. James's writing is phenomenal. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book and especially the last 1/3. I couldn't read fast enough. The characters were all complex and their motives well thought out. Ellie was a fantastic protagonist. In general, I am not a fan of flashbacks to learn about a character's past, but Ellie and Gloria were so interesting I actually enjoyed it. Each person had a meaningful reason to be included and added to the mystery. The mystery was so well done! I never would have guessed the killer in a million years, and I hope that St. James fools you too! Ellie meets back up with a missed romantic connection over the course of her investigation and things really heat up, though nothing more than kissing on the page. So, mystery fans who don't enjoy a lot of romance will still enjoy this one. The romance is done really well. It feels believable and emotional. No insta love here! The Other Side of Midnight is the first 5-star book I have read in quite a while. I recommend it to those that enjoy a good mystery with supernatural elements, fantastic characters, and a riveting plot. I'll definitely be reading more from Simone St. James. ... show more

  • Good stories continue
The setting of The Other Side Of Midnight is London, 1925. There are elements of romance, suspense and the supernatural in this haunting gothic-like stand alone. Psychics, seances and spirits were commonplace since the sufferings of WWI were still fresh. The desire to reach those beyond could be intense. A medium called Gloria Sutter is murdered. A message from Gloria surfaces requesting the help of her former friend and rival, Ellie Winter. Ellie, who at present, simply finds lost items, must now honor Gloria's request. The story intensifies as Ellie fearfully accepting her ability to see the dead and James Hawley, a damaged war verteran "who can't forget his experiences and his fallen comrades from the war" join forces. They face their personal demons courageously as they pursue Gloria's murderer. Simone St James' plot is, as usual, well crafted with attention to the details of her characters. A good read. ... show more

  • love how this author writes!!
Another sterling example of a great balance of story elements! St. James is able to balance mystery, creepy ghosts, suspense, history, and romance like nobody else. Everything flows smoothly into one overarching story that sucks here readers in to the last page. This book had a different focus than previous works, as other reviewers seem to have noticed. There’s more a focus on mystery and suspenseful getting-aways than your traditional haunting story. The creepy ghost elements are still there, mainly in last visitations and the occasional séance. The reader is kept on their toes as Ellie and James struggle to keep away from a murderer that is truly spine-tingling. It’s a different feel from St. Jame’s previous books but not in a bad way. Her characterizations are as special and perfect as ever, though. Ellie’s a practical and down to earth girl who’s only trying to make a living and create a life of her own. Her powers set her apart so her struggle to do this draws you in. And James…. Oh boy, do you feel for him after this story is through! His fight to overcome some strong residual war angst tears at your heart. The heaviness in his soul makes one think of all our veterans today who face the same things he did. I love them together as well. The author is able to create such a strong connection between her leads; these two are no exception. The romance is intense, to say the least, and very fiery. Ellie and James bong almost from the very start and create this sizzling relationship that kept me engaged from their first re-meeting. This book has just cemented even more my love for this author (not that the love was in any danger of expiring LOL). She blends so many elements perfectly, makes my spine tingle with the eeriness of her story, and her characters shine with life in their deep characterizations and romantic connections. I always feel comfortable recommending this author to anyone who loves a great story, and this book is just another great title to add to the list. ... show more

  • The book is awesome but…
It came with the cover creased and what appears to be water damage on several of the pages.

  • Flapper Gothic
I have read all except one of her books. Love the 1920 settings. All of them are an absorbing read with subdued love stories. A common thread in her books deal with PTSD trauma from WW1. A somber, creepy atmosphere. The characters are typically well developed and conclusions are positive. I hope she writes more; I will read them! ... show more
