This bag replaced an old, workhorse backpack that I wore daily and put to many uses, from carrying a laptop and meeting materials, to farmers market and grocery items on weekends, to carrying water bottles, cameras and trail mix on hiking trips. The North Face Surge has the functionality I was looking for in a replacement: a padded pocket for my laptop, an adequately sized middle pocket, two external side pockets for water bottles, and three, smaller zippered pockets (one on top, two on the front) providing generous storage space for pens, iPad, notebook(s), etc. The shoulder straps and back of the pack are well-padded making for a comfortable carry. I trash backpacks. For starters, I bring them everywhere. Like it's my phone. The store, the bar, the beach, the trail, swimming. Everywhere. I also over pack them. I come from the school of it's better to have it and not need it than the other way around. Plus I got kids so I'm packing their stuff. And the dog's. And sometimes my work computer. This one's been taking in all comers. The pulls on the zippers aren't great and the zippers do get mixed up because of placement, but everything else on this bag is really good. ... show more

I absolutely love this backpack...except for ONE THING. The space of one pocket take up the space of another pocket. Upon first look, the pockets all seem very roomy. however, start packing items the bag and you soon realize that all the pockets are fighting for the same space. You just have to be extra strategic on how you pack, and what you pack where. I wish they can some extra fabric in more places to alleviate this problem. Overall though it's an amazing bag. the padding is more on the firmer side which i like because it doesn't seem like the padding will wear out as fast. the laptop compartment is amazing. super cushy and a generous false bottom with a bit of structure in the back panel makes me feel very confident my laptop is protected. I wish they gave just a touch more room in the tablet sleeve though. And the organizational components of the bag are extremely useful. Love it love it love it ... show more

My dad loves it. He’s currently using it in New Zealand and Australia. My mom said he loved ll the pockets and being hands free at the airport. He got really excited when he opened it at Xmas and immediately started playing with it and wore it home that night.
