This was a gift for my wife, and I bought a gray one for myself. We like them a lot. We both use them on a daily basis, both for everyday use and for outdoor trips. The dedicated laptop/tablet compartment is especially useful. We like their aesthetics, capacity, and versatility. I added a bungee cord, some extra padding to the laptop compartment, and two tactical pouches to mine to increase its functionality. After considerable use and abuse, they still look like new. I couldn’t be happier with my North Face Recon backpack. I use it daily for work and travel, and it’s hands-down one of the best backpacks I’ve owned. The laptop compartment is well-padded and fits my 15” laptop perfectly. There’s also plenty of space in the main compartment for books, clothes, or gear, plus a ton of smartly placed pockets to keep everything organized. The front pocket is great for quick-access items, and the fleece-lined pocket is perfect for sunglasses or a phone. The best part? It’s incredibly comfortable to wear, even when fully loaded. The padded straps and back panel provide great support, and the sternum strap helps with weight distribution. It also feels super durable—classic North Face quality. Almost perfect. This backpack has the space I need and I really like the pockets for drinks and water bottles. They are oversized so my bottles don’t fall out! Now the second zipper compartment is what needs some work on how it is sewn. Because of how the first and second sit and how it is structured the first compartment makes my backpack “top heavy” and it ALWAYS falls forward. In fact it’s absolutely annoying. The other part is the hardback component is necessary to give the back pack support, however it is sewn with absolutely zero flexibility which hinders the bag from being able to sit squarely and so it can help prevent falling forward. If the hard backing was even 1-2 inches shorter and not sewn into the seams, this would allow some flexibility and help the bag stabilize. I use this bag daily…. And I wish these were things that I fix easily myself so this bag could be functional as well as sit on a table or bench without tipping over every time. ... show more

    • Quality backpack, worth the money
I used my old North Face Slingshot backpack for nearly 18 years, so it was time to upgrade. I always liked the design of the Recon and chose to purchase this backpack. I've never seen the navy backpack in person, but since it's my favorite color, I pulled the trigger. When I received it, I was surprised by how nice and sleek it looked. All the compartments were thoughtfully designed and are practical. The soft material they used for the interior of the front compartment is perfect for phones, glasses, and other things you want to keep safe. The backpack was bigger than expected, and is more than adequate to carry my everyday work items. The straps are comfortable and sturdy. The external fleece-lined pocket is a huge upgrade from my old Slingshot strings that could only carry clothes. I don't use the buckle straps, so it does look a little sloppy at times. However, you can adjust them so they're not in your way. The bottom of the backpack looks durable and it's very unlikely any holes will form in the future. Since my old backpack lasted so long, I'm confident this one will last longer. Overall, I think it's a quality backpack and I'm getting more than I paid for. ... show more

If you're using this as a simple EDC bag for a laptop, its pretty good. It fits a 15 inch laptop just fine. The durability would work if you're probably not putting it through the ringer. My commute really isn't too demanding, but for what it is, this bag is perfect. Enough room for a small jacket or hoodie and a lunch bag if you pack it right. I'd say its worth the money and the build quality is pretty strong. And I think it looks pretty good without being TOO tactical, and more urban cool, even with a name like RECON. ... show more

Fantastic bag. Initially purchased cheaper backpack for my high schooler in August. By end of September it was ripping at the shoulder straps and zipper. Purchased this bag and it has held up to major abuse. Overstuffed clothes, heavy text books and a laptop AND bulky clothes, getting tossed on the ground, etc. Not one string has come undone. I expected the shoulder straps to fray like the first bag, but five months later and the seams look like they did the day it arrived. You get what you pay for! ... show more
