I love Christmas and all the tradition that accompanies it, including reading the stories of the season. I recently started compiling hard cover versions of all my favorite, beloved books and novels with which to build my own home library. Of course, no library can be complete without its very own copy of ‘A Visit From St. Nicholas’ (or, as most know it, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas). I reviewed quite a few versions before I landed on this absolutely eye-poppingly gorgeous full color tome, illustrated by the incredibly talented Charles Santore. The book itself is large, oversized and square. A perfect size for reading aloud while sharing the pictures with your own little viewing audience. It looks good resting on the coffee table, yet fits equally comfortably on the bookshelf. The book is hard bound and has a beautifully illustrated, sturdy dust cover. A cheery little bonus shows up in the middle of the book - a 4 page, highly detailed fold out illustration of Saint Nicholas and his 8 tiny reindeer flying away over the Victorian housetops and sparkling moonlit snow! What fun! This book is both pleasing to the eye and well constructed, and may become an enduring addition to your own holiday traditions, and those of your children and grandchildren, for years to come. This book is very beautiful. It's the kind of book you leave out on the coffee table during the holidays. I like it so much I plan on purchasing another one as a gift for a friend. The cover is a faux red leather and the inside graphics and printings make this a quality book. We plan to have this book for many years and read it out loud every year for Christmas. This is a beautiful book. The illustrations are so fun and the cover makes it feel like an heirloom. I can't wait to share it with the little ones. Definitely worth the price. Just FYI for those thinking that there are misspellings in the book. The original 1823 publication of the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (widely known as "The Night Before Christmas") featured eight reindeer with the names Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder, and Blixem. Dunder and Blixem come from Dutch words meaning "thunder" and "lightning". In later editions—most notably Clement Clarke Moore's 1844 collection of Poems—Dunder and Blixem evolved into Donder and Blitzen to improve the rhyme. Donder eventually shifted to Donner over time, particularly popularized by the 1949 song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". So what you're seeing in this book is how the story was originally written, not misspellings. :) ... show more

I was recruited by a talent agent to play Santa this year in the area where we live. Yep, I have a big, white beard. I brought this book with me on every gig to be prepared to read to the kids and show them the pictures. The artwork is big and easy to see and the entire story is written out in the front so you can just read the words without turning the pages.
