Teaching grandchildren personal finance concepts

Unfortunately our public school system doesn't cover these topics even in an elective class. Our grandchildren are 9 year old twins and 12 year old twins. I bought several different books to try to find material that was easy to follow but comprehensive. This looked to be the most effective for us. We had our first study session together yesterday. They were impressed with the Pokemon credentials of one of the authors. The lesson went very well. I thought it would be only for the 12 year olds but the 9 year olds wanted to be included. So I ordered two more books. I am using each lesson combined with family history to try to make the concepts stick with them. My thanks to the authors for providing such accessible information on such important life skills. ... show more

Almost deserves 5 stars

This is a great book. The way they later out the info with graphics is GREAT....EVERY SINGLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT should have to read this book. Great job authors. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that it could go further in a few key areas. For instance, there is A LOT of information that could be included with the mortgage section. For instance, what are points? What does an amortization schedule look like? If you buy a house for $200,000 at 4.5%, how much do you spend in total, with interest, by the time it's paid off in 30 years? I also think they could have expanded similarly in the credit card section. Explain the same thing...how interest works, the hidden penalties, how people get trapped with credit cards and what happens if you only pay minimum payments every month. If this book comes out with a revised edition that explains and expands more in certain topics i'd gladly give it 5 stars. ... show more

Perfect purchase for my 20s

As a young immigrant in the USA with no parental figures, I needed to somehow figure out everything about adulting on my own. This book has been gold to me. It gives you step by step on how to get started, with a lot of visual illustration. I liked the illustration because for someone who is just starting, tons of information that is not easy to digest can be overwhelming. It's taken me years to really apply all these concepts, for example, starting from how to do a monthly budget, to purchasing your house.
