I can’t say enough good things about The Honest Kitchen dehydrated dog food — it has made a noticeable difference in my dogs’ health and quality of life! I have two Golden Doodles (with strong Poodle genes) who have been eating The Honest Kitchen for several months now. The results have been fantastic: • Both dogs have lost weight comfortably while staying energetic. • One of them had extremely arthritic joints with significant inflammation — that has improved dramatically, and he’s moving much more comfortably. • The biggest surprise has been their eyes. They used to have horrible black drainage. One dog’s drainage has completely eliminated, and the other’s has reduced significantly (not fully gone perhaps because my husband likes to sneak him extra snacks and table scraps — who knows!). Such a great product! We are currently using the Beef and Chicken food. My large, very healthy, 2-year-old Golden Doodle reached a point earlier this year where he was no longer interested in his food. He refused to eat various canned dog foods and expressed limited interest in his dry food. Naturally this was quite stressful, so as I researched alternative options, I gave him home cooked food and used Dr. Harvey's dehydrated mixes. This made a tremendous difference as he was much happier and thankfully regained his appetite, but my growing concern was that I wasn't meeting all of his nutritional needs and remained unsure if Dr. Harvey's mixes were either. I was thrilled to find The Honest Kitchen! I started off by using their base mix, Preference (which is excellent), as I felt it best to start with the home cooked food he enjoyed. I then slowly explored their dehydrated Beef and Chicken options after having watched their videos and read all of the reviews, but was still hesitant thinking the food may be "soupy" or unappetizing. I ultimately moved forward because it was very important to me that all of their ingredients are human grade, and manufactured here in the U.S. in human grade plants that exceed FDA standards. It gave me such peace of mind knowing they put so much effort into creating such healthy food and are so transparent about their company. I could not have been more wrong about my fears of the food being too "soupy"!! It not only smells GREAT, but is a solid portion of food with a thick consistency once all of the water is blended. Preparation is so easy and takes only minutes (which is crucial when you have a toddler at home, too!). I LOVE that my dog is excited to eat this food (sometimes waiting with baited breath and drooling!) and have continued to purchase the larger boxes. So far I have been rotating between the beef and chicken, but will likely expand into the other flavors as well. Also important to note - he had no trouble adjusting to this food (either the base mix or beef/chicken), has not experienced any tummy troubles (which is AMAZING), and his poop is solid and regular!! =)

And I don't blame her. The cranberries don't hydrate as well as the rest of the ingredients. They are whole, not cut up. Once the food is hydrated, they present a comparatively large nugget to the dog while eating. At first, I thought the food might be contaminated with a bug of some sort. I've decided the dog is spitting it out thinking the same thing. Now I pick them out before I feed her. I won't buy the beef again. A couple of notes: I find using warm, almost hot, water is the best way to rehydrate this food. I add the water and stir vigorously. Depending on the 'flavor' rehydration can take more or less than the recommended amount on the box. The turkey seems to need the least. Also, it doesn't hurt to wait a couple of minutes before putting down the food to see if it needs a bit more water. Trial and error will lead you to the texture your dog likes best. Not using enough water could lead to a stomach ache in a small dog as the food would continue to expand in the stomach if not enough water is added. Also, my elder Chinese Crested dog does well on this food, but she won't eat it plain. I add some chopped up chicken or salmon to her meals. Changing to this diet has led to a consistent bowel with little odor and easy clean up. Her energy levels increased markedly on this diet.

For a couple of years now I've been feeding my dog half commercial food (high quality kibble, wet food, etc) and half home prepared/raw. I've tried so many different brands of kibble/wet food and never felt like any of them were 'perfect' for my dog. Some he did okay on, but we didn't really like them enough to stick with one brand for any huge length of time. I decided to try Honest Kitchen because I had heard good things, and felt that the high quality ingredients would compliment the other half of my dog's diet well. I had to get the beef recipe because my dog is allergic to poultry and eggs. As you probably know, this food is a powder that you have to add water to. I usually mix his food, take him out for his morning walk, and the food is ready to go by the time we get back. If you give your dog any kind of supplements, especially anything that comes in a powder/liquid, it's very easy to mix supplements in with this food as well. My dog eats this readily. Don't know if that's saying much considering he once ate Christmas tree lights and seems to think rabbit crap and earthworms are tasty. But hey, at least it's not a struggle getting him to eat. It took his digestive system about a week to get used to this food but after that he seemed to handle it better than he does kibble. I'll most likely continue using this in the morning paired with his raw food at night. I really wish they had other complete recipes that didn't include poultry and/or eggs so I could change up the flavor once in awhile, but oh well. My dog is around 20 lbs. I just buy this in 2 lb boxes. Because my guy isn't huge, and I only use it as part of his diet, a 2 lb box lasts me a good amount of time. I can see how it'd get expensive if you have a large dog or feed this exclusively. But if you're looking for something easy to feed in addition to a raw or home prepared diet, I think this is a good option.

I have a pretty picky, spoiled rotten (by my wife who treats him like her 5th child) Boston Terrier, who acts like a food critic whenever you place a bowl of food down for him. It's as if I'm terrified of the reviews I'll be seeing in the local paper, written by my dog and his last dinner. He ate Kibbles & Bits ever since he was a pup, then suddenly, at 5 1/2 years, he decided he just wasn't going to eat it any more, and the search was on to end his hunger strike. I read all the great reviews from people who had similar problems getting their picky dogs to eat, and this food being the solution. They all stated it looked like green oatmeal (and didn't look very appetizing), but their dogs didn't mind the look, and ate it up. By the reviews, I decided to try it. My dog wouldn't go within 3 feet of his bowl the first few times I made it. I finally got him to at least go over and smell it (he always does this before eating anything, and after that he wouldn't go anywhere near his bowl. After a week I finally gave up. In their defense, I also ordered the new Amazon brand of dog food as a backup, I think its called Wag, and he wouldn't touch that either. But that one didn't have reviews that read like this dog food was the saving grace you've been searching for (written by customers who bought it, not by the seller, just to be clear). After going through this with many other dog foods, I finally decided to research what exactly my dog required for a good balanced healthy diet. Surprisingly, the required foods I would need to purchase to make my own dog food, healthier than anything I could by unless I was spending an extreme amount of money, was actually less than what this food would cost to serve him the same amount of days. Dogs don't require anything fancy, just healthy, and if it smells like what I'm eating, he'll do flips for it. I know make his food. A monthly supply of food for him (2 cups a day) costs me anywhere from $20 to $25/month. Much less than what a months worth of human grade food costs. The biggest bonus, he couldn't eat it fast enough from the very first serving. Still eats every meal without hesitation (although I did learn my dog won't eat his peas). This food may be great for some dogs, I definitely don't know enough about it to knock it, and the ingredients are healthy, that's a fact. But it didn't work like I thought for my dog. But in the end, I learned that I could make his food at home, just as healthy for less money (with no added preservatives), in less than 20 minutes a week cooking time. And, my dog finally quit complaining and now eats every meal.

I really want to love this product for my dog but for now, I rate it as 3 three stars. It is definitely better than packaged dog food with questionable ingredients and is relatively "clean". For the price, I would expect pastured beef (grass fed) and that the animals were not fattened up with grains. It is not a complete whole food meal, since it's primarily muscle meat and does not include nutrient dense organ meat. There is no reason for white potatoes to be part of a dog's meal, and if there are potatoes they should at least be organic. White potatoes fall on the list of Dirty Dozen produce, meaning the pesticide residue is high. http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/list.php Why not have all of these vegetable/starch sourced organically? Ingredients like flaxseed sounds great, but the nutrients aren't bioavailable unless the flaxseeds are sprouted. I'm currently using this product in the interim until we can find a source for raw pet food. My dog enjoys the this recipe mix, but he hasn't been known to turn away any food. Only thing I find I notice with him is the lack of satiety since it's a gruel/soupy mixture. I add sardines to the mix to help bulk up the meal, and also add Fermented Cold Liver Oil (Green Pastures) as a whole food source for nutrients. I like that the batch I purchased was made only a few weeks before the purchase date. They did change the plastic bag packaging (used to be a zip close top) so it doesn't close or seal as easily as before. Overall, definitely a better product than conventional dog food and the human grade ingredients is a plus. There is room for improvement on the quality of the ingredients used. UPDATE: We've purchased this product via the Amazon subscription which we'll need to cancel. At two cups of product per day for my dog, it runs out 2.5 -3 weeks later. We end up having to buy more food until the once a month box arrives. So far, it's been a rather expensive way to feed our dog who has been losing weight with both the beef and turkey formulas. He needs to eat three times a day now to fill out.

My dog has a sensitive stomach, and I was struggling to find a nutritious food that would also sit well in his tummy. After several trips to the vet (and one to the ER) my regular vet had put him on a prescription food by Royal Canin. After reading the ingredients (soy protein broken down small enough to not trigger an allergy, and other junky fillers), I knew I could not have him stay on this food long term and began searching for an alternative. I found a holistic vet who was able to do a food allergy test and after getting the results, recommended Honest Kitchen Beef. (As a note to any owners having the same struggle as me, I was told by a few different vets that the oil and other products used in kibble - the stuff that actually forms the food into kibble - can itself be extremely inflammatory for dogs' stomachs.) Frankie has been on this food for a month and so far, it's been a total blessing. It's obviously packed with nutrients and doesn't have any garbage. I was worried about the form the food is in when I first got it -it looked kind of gross - but my dog LOVES it. He hasn't had any tummy issues, poops regularly (your dog WILL poop 2x as much as he/she did on any other food), and looks forward to meal time :) I would highly recommend this food, especially if your dog has a sensitive stomach, or chicken/turkey/fish allergies. I do feel like it's unfairly expensive - my dog is 53lbs and I'm spending about $175 a month on his food now. I am sure it takes a lot more money to make than regular dog food, but I feel like it's the same charade as with human food - we'll continue to eat garbage until healthy stuff becomes more affordable. I would strongly urge Honest Kitchen to consider coming down a few bucks. One thing I will warn about is that after you add water to the food, it is not stable for more than a few hours. My dog is the kind of dog who, 50% of the time will eat his food asap, and the other 50% of the time will kind of graze or leave it for later (sometimes, he won't even eat breakfast until dinner!) The few times he's eaten his food 5-6+ hours later, he pukes almost immediately. So, if your dog doesn't eat it within a couple of hours, I'd definitely try refrigerating it - otherwise you end up wasting a ton of money on this expensive food if you have to throw it out after a few hours. All in all, amazing food if you can afford it.
