I think this Bible study is a great resource for helping you engage with God in ways that allow you to be more contemplative, but not in an insular, individualistic way, as is often the case. The “Today” portion invites us to consider the realities of our world, especially those around us who have less and who are hurting—those whom the Bible consistently directs our attention toward. The study overall is deeply rooted in Scripture while also having eyes and ears to the world around us. I honestly think this is so important because if we’re not careful, we can make Bible studies or devotionals solely about ME and how God is speaking to ME. While this is important, the Bible consistently turns our attention to the world around us and toward our neighbors (of which the Bible has a massively inclusive view). In short, we need both: the personal and individual, but also the communal and outward-focused, and this is all rooted in God. I think the Good and Beautiful Bible Study hits this balance in the right way. Some other thoughts: - I’m no artist by any means, so I appreciate the visual component—it adds another dimension to my time with God that I don’t typically access. Overall, the book is very aesthetic and isn’t visually overwhelming at all. I’m more of a read it straight through and analyze it kind of person. The whole “Reflect” portion helps me slow down and consider the passage deeply. - Parts of the book do lean toward interpretation, but I don’t think this is necessarily a problem. No one reads objectively, but we each bring a perspective that is influenced by life experiences, how we grew up, and even more innate qualities. You’ll find this in any Bible study/devotional book you find. As I read the author’s words (which you can find in the back for each individual study), I am hearing the perspective of another image-bearer, and I think this is really valuable. ... show more
