Although she is the toast of 1950s New York Society, with everything money can buy, she is afraid that one day her beauty will fade and she will lose the love of her glamorous husband. Honor is a young seamstress, who has been working her fingers to the bone with little reward, but her luck is about to change. For her 30th birthday, Joy commissions Honor to create the the most dazzling dress ever seen. Lily has always loved vintage clothes. Thousands follow her fashion blog. One day she stumbles upon an article about a legendary evening dress, created in the 1950s, but now lost to history. She knows that she must find out more. What Lily uncovers is a story of glamour, friendship and love betrayed. The story of two women, one ruthless man – and a dress so sublime, nothing in couture would ever match it again. Read more

  • Must Love Clothes!
My mother was an accomplished dressmaker, able to fashion dresses from muslin patterns she created. This book brought back many memories of her talent and an appreciation for the incredible fabrics that were once available. Anyone with an interest in vintage clothing, in classic style, in fabrics from around the world, would enjoy this aspect of this novel. The story itself was, perhaps, more predictable than the reader might want, but it did have some depth. Many of the characters were both likable and detested, not unlike in real life. In the past, Joy was pitiful and to be pitied, Frank understandably complex considering his beginnings in Ireland; Honor an artist and too ready to condemn, herself and others. Then the modern-day cast of Lily, Sally, Gareth with their personal shortcomings as well rounded out the story line. Perhaps, all was a little pat, those from across the sea meeting in a vast city, then those relatives generations later being able to connect, but it was a good story and well worth the time. A reader who is familiar with Chanel, Balenciaga, Fath, McCardell and other iconic designers will picture days gone by pleasurably if slowly. ... show more

  • this is an inside look at the fashionistas who funded America's rise in the industry
The details of making The Dress are impressive and disturbing that so much money, effort and time could be spent on something to be worn once. Parallel story lines always work for me, these were as tightly structured as well as the dressmakers performed their crafts 3 generations apart. Nicely done!

  • The Dress! Say Yes to this Dress!
The book I read was titled "The Dress" with a different cover. In any case it was excellent. I found the characters in the 60's a bit more interesting than their modern counter parts. Often times when stories shift from one time/ story line to another it's confusing. This was not the case in this book, it flowed nicely. Enjoyed from beginning to end. ... show more

  • disappointed
Very disappointed that the only person to find happiness, of the older set, was Joy. Certainly, Frank and Honor deserved some as well. There were almost too many storylines and characters. Sally and Jack seemed to be thrown in. You never did find out why Joe never talked about his past. It was a very sad read, for me, with more tragedy than happiness. ... show more

  • Fluffy but not filling
Like "the dress", this novel is covered with yards of tulle and baubles, but empty inside. I don't want to give away the ending, but it just did not make sense. The emotions of the main characters were not believable.

  • Very developed characters who make you feel for them, great book!
Highly recommend. There were so many interesting family history story lines, very developed and complex characters who made you feel for them. It was great that they tied it all in many years later with more history to uncover. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very well written,

  • Four Stars
It was a great book, different and kept you considering the story from all the main characters perspective.
