Description

“Go and get a box and put yourself in it.” Henry Brown heard these words, but he didn’t know if he could believe them. A voice was telling Henry, a slave from Virginia, to climb into a wooden box and mail himself to freedom. The Disappearing Man is based on a true story—one of the most incredible escape attempts in the history of the Underground Railroad. In 1849, with the help of two friends, Henry Brown was placed in a box marked THIS SIDE UP WITH CARE. Then he was shipped from Richmond to Philadelphia, a harrowing, 27-hour ordeal at the mercy of cargo handlers and rogues of all sorts. This was the ultimate disappearing act. He intended to make a man disappear in Richmond and miraculously reappear in Philadelphia. He aimed to turn a dead man into a living man, a slave into a free man. Read more

  • The slave who was shipped to Philadelphia in a box, and arrived alive.
The story of slavery is always a sad story but this one has a HEA. Henry Brown was blessed with a wonderful voice, to sing in the church choir, and a quick hand to entertain others with his little wooden box and making the coin disappear. There is not much happiness but Henry saw Nancy and fell in love she was the one he wanted for his wife. John Allen was his boyhood companion and fishing buddy but later in life John Allen was an enforcer in the slave filled tobacco factory. John Allen liked to show his power by whipping the slaves with little provocation, and he especially wanted to keep Henry under his control. This story was an adventure to read with how Henry lived and eventually escaped to the north. I recommend this book to those who want a brief glimpse into the life and family of Henry Brown. ... show more

  • Masterpiece
I couldn't put this story down. It makes me glad of the civil war that set these people free. I know this is based on a true story, that showed what a body can endure when they have God to help us get through the impossible.

  • Great story, except...
Great read but as a former history teacher I am surprised at the small details that seem to have gone un-researched. First of all, as in Mr. Peterson’s previous novel, the word “y’all” is repeatedly misused. “Y’all”, as any true Southerner can attest to, is only used in the plural. Mr. Peterson has his characters often use the word even when speaking to one person alone. Secondly, he refers more than once to “grandfather clocks”. This term did not come into use until sometime in the 1870s. These clocks would have simply been called “tall case” or “long case” clocks. Having said that, I have enjoyed the novel and would probably read others by Mr. Peterson, but would expect authors of historical novels to be more careful about research before putting word to paper. ... show more

  • Fascinating story!
The author has done it again! Two great stories on how 2 separate slaves escaped in unusual ways. As well as in depth telling of how blacks were treated and how some whites were their friends. A must read for a look at history.

  • Another great historical fiction
...that tells the largely true story of one slave's unique, yet harrying, escape. The courage of this man and his friends is undeniable, as is humankind's determination to be free against all odds shown.

  • What a Story!
I had never heard the story of The Disappearing Man. ( He shipped himself in a packing crate to the North to escape slavery.) However I had heard of the Underground Railroad and mention was made of the Underground Railroad in our history books back in the '60's when I was in high school. I like to learn as much as I can about historical events so I chose this book. I actually purchased it earlier and it was shelved in my Kindle Library waiting for me to get to it. There are two other books in this series and my plan is to read them soon. We study history to help prevent the recurrence of mistakes in the past. If you are interested, look into works by this author. Links are given in the back of this to scholarly writings about these events. ... show more

  • History comes alive
I like everything about Peterson's books. Based on historical facts, it comes alive. I have read several of his books and intend to read all of them.

  • Traveling by Box
Once Henry saw his wife and children sold and sent to North Carolina, he had no reason to live. He would do anything to get the freedom he had been promised many times so he decided to mail himself to Philadelphia, a free city for blacks. The question is can a person travel by box and live.
