Description

ABOUT THE DEATH DECK You think you know your friends and family, right? But do you know their thoughts on the most universal yet rarely talked about topic of all? With a playful tone and a sense of humor, THE DEATH DECK is both a game and tool that allows friends and family members to open up and share thoughts, stories and preferences about life and death in a non-threatening and surprisingly fun way. Players of THE DEATH DECK partner up to guess answers to deep, funny, and sometimes weird questions on the topic of death. With 112 cards and numerous ways to play, THE DEATH DECK encourages lively conversations and life-changing dialogue. ABOUT THE CREATORS The game was created by Lisa Pahl (a hospice/ER social worker) and Lori LoCicero (an author/widow) who met in hospice when Lori’s husband Joe was facing end of life. The two bonded over Lisa’s compassionate expertise and Lori’s willingness to explore her grieving process fully. After Joe died, their healing sessions continued -- exceeding the typical timeframe of aftercare, extending to over 2 years -- and their conversations grew to include their frustrations on the “taboo” topic of death in our culture and how important it is to not only have these conversations but to have them early. Their sessions turned into ideas. Their ideas manifested into THE DEATH DECK.

  • Interesting and compassionate way to explore attitudes and feelings with others about Death
Introduced to this deck in a Death Cafe group meeting and everyone seemed to like it. Kept the convo going and people just skipped questions they didn’t want to answer. Designed by Hospice workers, so right on and sensitive questions. I brought it to a party and no one wanted to do it, duh, so choose your group for it! ... show more

  • This game is awesome....
This incredibly important, entertaining and beautiful game is something I highly recommend. It helps to inspire critical conversations one should have with their loved ones - as well with oneself - all in a safe and fun environment. Great for bonding - great for conversations - simultaneously hilarious and insightful. I loved playing this game since it forced me to start asking myself important questions on topics that otherwise are uncomfortable or simply too sad to ponder. Do your self and your loved ones a favor - I seriously could not recommend this any higher - particularly for people in their thirties to fifties. Great conversations will ensue!! ... show more

  • Had a great evening with family & these cards
We each learned something about one another that we didn't know. There was laughter and tears, getting the bones of dying and our wishes and hopes for ourselves and others. It's a great way to introduce the subject of death and to talk more openly, without all the usual inhibition. We actually stayed up til 3am, because we couldn't stop thinking and talking about the questions on the cards. ... show more

  • Death is difficult to talk about.
Death is inevitable; however, death is a taboo subject to so many people. This game provides an opening to speak about death with others in a fun-like atmosphere with the opportunity to discuss subjects related to death. Looking forward to playing this game with a few people who are hesitant to speak about death. ... show more

  • Fun and easy to use.
Fantastic Game! This is a fun and informative game exploring curiosity about end-of-life and afterlife. It can also be an educational tool for classrooms as well as parties. Every time I play with a group, others want to add it to their game cupboard. I use it in my college classroom to spark curiosity among the students. They love it! ... show more

  • Peace of mind
I am a grief counselor and have purchased 4 of these decks so far. These questions are so important to think through and talk through with people close to us. My clients have a tremendous amount of relief when knowing that their person’s final wishes were met. That is the gift of this deck. I’m very glad it exists. ... show more

  • We all have something to say or questions we'd like to ask.
They say it's not if but when you'll get cancer. When whatever it is does come, there are things that need to be discussed - not just for those being left behind, but those who are dying also need to be able to say things. It can be difficult when no one wants to talking about it, after all time is of the essence in these circumstances. But that doesn't make it any easier. This game does what we can't. It breaks the ice, in what one might say is perhaps a unrespectful maybe even tacky but poking fun sort of way. But most importantly - it gets the job done and allows people to start talking about what NEEDS to be said before it's too late. All those things said at funerals, but that should have been shared. Or even the funeral itself. Or the things that could be the most meaningful for the person passing BEFORE they die, but are afraid to ask or bring it up. Things that could be extremely meaningful for those surviving, but will never know because it was never said. The game of Death helps facilitate the conversations that SHOULD happen, but too often never happen because we're afraid, uncomfortable, feel it's not our place. Whatever the reason, it's wrong and you'll never know - until to play the game of Death. Fact is someone doesn't even need to be dying to play. BC even discussing our thoughts about death, our questions and our wishes. It all needs to be said. So have a tacky evening and just play the game of Death - everyone will be better for it! ... show more

  • Fun and Profound!
Ok, so, I've played 3 times now with friends and my husband and not only is it ridiculously fun, but I learned so much about myself, my partner, and my friends. I love that there are light hearted questions mixed in with....well, what I thought would be tough (end of life) questions that I've always been kind of scared to think about the answers to. And you know what...those questions weren't as scary as I thought they'd be! I truly have to give it to this game for loosening me up about talking and thinking about 'life and death' matters. I've lost loved ones in my life and had to deal with all of their end of life affairs. You'd think that would make me more open about planning all of my affairs...but I still found it hard. So thank you Death Deck. ... show more
