Alice sitting on a Park Bench eating grapes is approached by an extremely well endowed male. So starts this Edmund Gorey tale, by any other anagram name. Through several discreetly placed obstructions the book keeps its pleasures innocent and lust as far away as the local convent. If you are looking to make a name for yourself with the local tea party by banning a titillatingly humourous book go ahead with Lady Chatterly but you might be disappointed with Ogdred Weary's new book.

It's Edward Gorey; what can I say? You either love his stuff, or you don't get it at all. Only Gorey could write an illustrated pseudo-Edwardian porno work that doesn't show any naughty bits, or use any offensive language. Everything is suggestive; nothing is explicit, and yet . . . well the mind -will- tend to fill in the details which Gorey has omitted. This is a delightful book, flawlessly executed in a style that Gorey pretty much invented for himself, to express the odd sort of world in which his characters find themselves. Many of Gorey's works, including this one, are available more economically as parts of the (to date) four "Amphigory" collections. But really, some of them are worth the few extra dollars to purchase as stand-alone books, if only to leave lying on the coffee table to raise the eyebrows of visiting PTA members and door-to-door religious proselytizers. This is one that's worth it.

In a typically odd work by Edward Gorey, the protagonist, Alice, gets her eyes opened to many new experiences by companions of various sorts (including Colonel Gilbert and his wife Louise, both of whom have wooden legs, and Donald, a sheepdog). All these new activities are strangely suggestive, but not what most people would actually call pornographic; after all, the book is only illustrated with Gorey's discreet little drawings. The sofa itself is contained in a room lined in polar bear fur, is upholstered in scarlet velvet, and has nine legs and seven arms; when the machinery starts within it Alice shudders and the book concludes in a delightfully ambiguous manner, in what may well be one of the strangest endings of any of Gorey's books. I like Gorey, and this is a good little book, but is not actually one of my favorites, as I think there are others more whimsical, and a few are even stranger. For Gorey lovers this is a great little book, but understand that it is quite small, which makes it a questionable value, particularly in light of the excellent compilations available.

Such a dear little scandalous but non-explicit book, with cunning Edward Gorey illustrations and copy that makes you blush. It's out of print so I was glad to get a copy.

Well honestly, I fully enjoyed where the book allowed my imagination to roam, until the very end. By the end I was terrified. I guess Gorey really has a knack at providing us with doorways into our own minds. Also, I suppose a child could read this and still have no idea what the hell was going on (who does know?). There'd just be that question of why people were having a party naked (although cleverly covered by way the author's own unique sense of arrangement). Truely a book any Gorey lover MUST add to their collection.

I read about this book on Brainpickings and thought it was such a clever idea that I had to buy it. A pornographic graphic novel, how neat! There are about 3 more pages in the actual book than the website (there are 30 pages total and they're all the same), and none of them are printed on both sides (wasteful). Not only do you never get to see what the couch actually does (WHAT ON EARTH MADE ALICE SCREAM UNCONTROLABLY?), the author/artist only knows about two adjectives for being formed or endowed. Somebody dies, but nothing actually gets done about it.
