Description

Here is a revolutionary approach for heating rooms and generating hot water. Author Gaelan Brown has worked with engineers and compost scientists to refine methods of composting that can heat greenhouses, barns, buildings, and hot water, all without combustion. It seems almost too good to be true: make high- value organic compost while generating reliable combustion-free heat. But it works, and this book is your practical introduction. With detailed case studies of large scale engineered systems and plans for constructing small DIY systems, you'll find step-by-step illustrations and photos to guide you through the process. A review of calculations to help you estimate the heating capabilities of various approaches and other planning tools make this book invaluable for compost heat recovery on any scale. Read more

  • Absolutely love this book
Format: Paperback
Absolutely love this book. Not only is it packed with information of how to heat and capture the heat with compost, it is full of countless stories people actually doing it. The book is full of nice quality color photographs on high quality paper that the cover art does not convey. My first thought in buying the book (based on the cover) was it would be another Rhodale style pamphlet (not saying that is bad, I bought it anyway didn't I!), what came instead was an extremely high quality book packed with real information and great stories. ... show more

  • Don't judge a book by its cover!
Format: Paperback
Don't judge a book by its cover . . . very true in this case! The cover gave me the impression this would be a crude, amateur-ish treatise on the topic of alternative energy. It is actually a very well written book with a considerable amount of valuation information. I was especially pleased that it included clear instructions for building a 40-cu. yard compost pile with embedded recirculating hot water heating system, along with links to other valuable sources of information. Well worth the price. (Sorry, but IMHO, a new cover would probably boost sales.) ... show more

Informative book, but there are times when the print is definitely too small...

  • What an amazing instruction book!
Format: Paperback
I tried to build a hot water compost heating pile myself without instructions, but it didn't work. I cannot wait to follow this book. I've been waiting for it and I'm so excited to start building my functional compost pile. Gaelan is a master at what he is doing and I am thrilled he wrote a book. If we would all be as innovative as him the world would be a better place. ... show more

  • If you want compost for your garden and free energy give this a try!
Format: Paperback
I liked this book and am using it to build a small compost heating system. Unfortunately, I got started on the system too late and it is not yet complete. As weather permits I am continuing on the work. The compost might not heat up sufficiently during the winter in which case I will continue in the spring. ... show more

  • Needs more how to.
Format: Paperback
Some good information but didn't answer questions that I was trying to get information about. Mostly stories of how other folks did things and their finding and less how to.
