Description

The Chinese Sailing Design and Build Your Own Junk Rig is a stem-to-stern guide for the Western sailor who wants to junk rig any hull. Words and drawings clearly explain in detail concepts that have been successfully used for millenia in the Orient. Using Western materials and techniques, Derek walks the amateur designer/builder through all the steps to successfully junk rig their hull of choice. The emphasis is on adaptation of the Chinese rig to Western hulls. Clear and concise, The Chinese Sailing Rig does in a small book what others have attempted in much larger volumes. This edition is an update of the original that has been selling worldwide since 1981."Van Loan squeezes into a small paperback what Hasler and McLeod did in a large hardback. Van Loan manages to get a lot of information over remarkably well." -Classic Boat "Offers good basic instruction for fitting a junk rig to a boat of your choice...this book will, most importantly, help to keep it simple." -Robin Blain; Hon. Sec. Junk Rig Association Read more

  • but their philosophies reflect their approaches to things like boat design
Western sailboats and sailing rigs developed along the thinking typical of Europeans: Hard work and "conquering" something makes you successful. Polynesians and Asians certainly don't shirk hard work, but their philosophies reflect their approaches to things like boat design, and rig design, and the Chinese "Junk" rig reflects a highly efficient approach in terms of getting from "here to there" without fighting the elements too much and by making the sailing rig much easier, if not quite as efficient when sailing to windward. For single handed or short handed sailing there may well be no other rig as simple and thus efficient for the crew. It also is a very easily designed and built rig, easily repaired too. This little book is not a "read" but a true "how to" book. It is a "minimalist" book so to speak on how to design and build a junk rig for your boat. Nothing more, and nothing less. It is clear, concise, and direct. ... show more

  • Good primer
I think this book serves as a good primer for anyone interested in junk rigs. And for someone with rigging and sail making experience, this guide might be plenty to get you going. For someone like me without experience, though, I'll need a little more in depth hand holding to guide me through my first build. ... show more

  • It doesn't do it for you
It does present all of the tools and techniques to convert an existing boat to a junk rig or for that matter put rig on a boat which hasn't been rigged with a sail before. The information included techniqes for finding the center of resistance, center of effort, size and placement of the mast, hardware sail size and construction and rigging. If you add in the info on the Junk Rig Association site it looks very possible. ... show more

  • Bought the digital version by mistake
I bought the digital version by mistake. Darn one click. Too easy to buy the wrong version. Then I went ahead and ordered the paper version. Discovered the paper version is easier to use if you are actually building a Junk Rig for a boat.
