This book is so pure. I grew up going to camp and the experience from a child's perspective is captured so perfectly. The book shows healthy camaraderie with other campers, diversity, and body inclusivity without having to specifically mention any of that. It's just seamlessly worked in in a way a child can understand and learn from. Also, the camper having red hair is so special and will make any little red head feel so seen. From my sister who I purchased the book for: “My sister originally purchased this book because we are both toaster swirlies. However, it ended up being a major hit as well as a tool to help my 2yo daughter understand being away from her Mom. Most of the time my daughter is home with me, but each summer I have to travel for work for 5 days. This was the first year she would really understand the separation and we used this book to explain she was going to “Camp Gigi” (her grandmother’s house) and she actually understood the concept. She read it over and over again while I was gone and actually has the entire book memorized now! We gave all of the cute little camper girls their own names so she loves to list them off on each page. I also created a calendar for her week at Camp Gigi with activities for her to put stickers on when completed as a way to count down our time apart but also learn the days of the week. Now, every time on the last page of The Camper and the Counselor, we have to sing the days of the week song (Barney’s version).
