  • The Cabinet of Curiosities
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is one of my favorite Penderghast novels. It's exciting, creepy and full of strange things. Authors Preston and Child at their very best.

  • Extraordinary, brilliant writing
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Phenomenal writing. Without giving away the plot, suffice it to say the character development, and plot construct are brilliant. It's engrossing, suspenseful and gripping. I could relate to these characters. I felt their fear, madness and sadness. It takes a seemingly absurd idea of inventing a serum extending life and making it believable. Not many authors can achieve this feat. Stephen King is one author who comes to mind. I couldn't put the book down. So far every one of these authors' books have been fantastic. ... show more

  • Not quite flawless, but a great read
Format: Hardcover
For anyone looking for a can't-put-it-down page turner that is literate, crafted, and informative, this is an excellent book. Preston and Child keep getting better, particularly in terms of character development, intricacy of plot, and the inclusion of detailed historical and scientific material that renders the book more than merely first-rate entertainment. The sections dealing with the geography and culture of 19th century Manhattan are rivetingly terrific, and as far as I can discern, factually accurate. Similarly, the thematic matter relating to that curious institution called "cabinets of curiosities" is informative and fascinating. The plot itself is fabulously laden with twists and turns and surprises. There are points in the story where I thought I had the trajectory of the novel all figured out, but Preston and Child proved me wrong. Indeed, they succeeding in maintaining the tension and anticipation right up until the very end of the book. The one flaw I encountered is that as surprising as the ending/resolution of the story turns out to be, it ultimately didn't seem to me quite satisfactory. No spoilers here, however, so I shan't say more except to add that the book is well-crafted and entertaining enough to overcome this single weakness. For those of us who love mystery/thrillers grounded in science and history, the works of Preston and Child have become required reading. This book leaves me awaiting even more eagerly their next novel. ... show more

  • Crown Jewel of the Pendergast Series
Format: Kindle
Some of the worst elements that would later come to bring the series down are introduced in fleeting detail here, but the book itself is probably the best P&C have ever put out. The imagery and suspense hold up for many rereads, even when the twists are known beforehand. There’s enough mystery left to the character of Pendergast and his complicated family legacy to keep things feeling acutely interesting here. The rest of the cast of characters is colorful and engaging, too. The central mystery of the story is probably the most artful and well-stricken balance of eerie pseudoscience and verisimilitude that any book in this series achieves. As someone who’s read every Pendergast novel more than once, this has to be my top recommendation among the series. Relic and Reliquary are great books, but neither are really necessary to understand and enjoy this one. If you’re looking for the most intriguing and entertaining this series has to offer, you’ve found it. Just don’t be surprised after, when nothing else in the Pendergast wheelhouse (quite) lives up to it. ... show more

  • Now THIS is a book!
Having just finished reading this gem of a book, I can sit back and reflect on the delicious story I have been privileged to be woven through. Funny how this book seems personal on a few levels, first of all I do live in NYC blocks away from the Museum of Natural History, my favorite museum since childhood, I took a day off from work just to sit back and finish this book, as one reviewer below said one might have to do, I discovered that a woman I work with has the last name of Pendergast, and the climax of the story felt like a special treat, since its my birthday; right now. And about the book; Considering how many books are being written and published, this story was fresh, creepy, had totally amazing characters; I think I will miss them, and might have to re-read some of these books, to get back in touch with them(Pendergast, Smithback), and I wasn't feeling like I was just sitting here reading a BOOK. I felt like I was there or here rather, in NY, with this scary secretive thing going on. The writers have done a fantastic job, because this feels real and surreal at the same time, its part Indian Jones, part Anatomy 101, part hide and seek and pray you're not found by the psycho killer, and part unraveling mystery that you have to sit back and get sucked into. Enjoy the ride, it's a heart pounding, fast and not nearly long enough for me! I feel sad having come to the end, but I will always look back on this story and remember how much pleasure I got from reading it and making it come alive in my head. Okay, I am done before the worlds smallest violin starts playing on my shoulder, ha-ha, enjoy! ... show more

  • Excellent read
Format: Kindle
Special Agent Pendergast from the previous novels "Relic" and "Reliquary" returns in this absolutely brilliant read. I won't go into plot details here, but after a hundred year old mass grave is discovered under a New York city building site, Pendergast arrives to investigate. It's not long before new murders begin with the same MO resulting in Pendergast and his allies racing to make the connection and stop the killer. If you haven't read the previous books (which were also great) you can still enjoy this. One of the greatest things about this series is that these are truly stand alone books - there's no previous knowledge needed, and no cheap cliffhangers. Pendergast is radically different then the usual FBI agent character, being highly intelligent and mysterious, yet likeable and flawed - a very difficult thing to write successfully. For fans of the series, this is everything you could hope for. It introduces several characters that go on to become series regulars such as Nora Kelly, Wren, Proctor, and of course Constance Green. It also establishes some of Pendergast's techniques like the memory crossings, and starts to shed light on his problematic family history. It's rare I'll give 5 star ratings to anything, but I feel this book really deserves it. It's a long read (over 600 pages) but the story flows so well it feels half that length. If you're willing to put the time in, you'll be rewarded. ... show more

  • An Agent Pendergast Mystery
Nora Kelly is surprised to come into her office at the Museum Of Natural History and find a stranger there. She is even more surprised when he introduces himself as FBI Agent Pendergast and states that he needs her help. During construction, an old tunnel has been found under a building. The tunnel is full of bricked up skeletons; thirty-six of them. Kelly and Pendergast go to the scene and examine the remains before the construction owner has them thrown out and removes all the bodies so that his new building can proceed on schedule. Each is the body of a young man or woman from at least a hundred years before. Each has been operated on, with the excision site being the lower back and spinal cord. Each has been murdered. Kelly isn't sure why this is so important to Pendergast but starts to understand quickly. A copycat killer has emerged and is killing modern victims in the same manner that the older bodies were killed. As they research the case, a strange motive emerges. Apparently, both the older murderer and the younger believe they have found a way to extend human life which requires the sacrifice of humans. Can Pendergast and Kelly, along with reported William Smithback, solve the mystery before more bodies are found? This is book three in the popular Agent Pendergast series. The authors work together to provide a tale that is strange but believable with overtones of paranormal events. The interplay between Kelly and Smithback and the revealing of Pendergast's mysterious family background and unorthodox methods keeps the reader turning the pages. This book is recommended for mystery readers. ... show more

  • Probably their best book.
Format: Kindle
As a long time fan of Preston & Child and having read nearly of their books, I would have to say that overall, this is their best one. It is a beautifully crafted, well though out story that grabs you from the first chapter and holds your attention to the last page. As this was their third novel in the Pendergast series, they we’re still in the character development stage for most of their recurring characters but they are all well written and play an integral role, especially Pendergast who is in top form. Pitted against an adversary as shrewd and cunning as he is, it makes for an exciting read. One of the best aspects of this book are the incredibly vivid depictions Lincoln & Child give of 19th century New York. There are a few chapters that you swear you are there and practically smell the New York streets in the 1800s. Great job fellas. This story lays a good foundation of Pendergast’s family background which is further developed in later novels as well as introduces us to Constance Greene who becomes a major character and pseudo love interest of Pendergast later in the series. I will not go into details as to the story’s plot, but will say that the storyline is very interesting. It teters on the fantastic but plausible while not crossing over into the suspension of disbelief realm. This one is well worth your time folks. ... show more
