An Absolutely Beautiful Deluxe Edition for Longtime Fans and Newcomers Alike (RIP Miura-sensei) An Absolutely Beautiful Deluxe Edition for Longtime Fans and Newcomers Alike (RIP Miura-sensei)
Format: Hardcover
The Berserk manga series by Kentaro Miura is one that speaks for itself. Often known as the "Game of Thrones" of manga, the story is complex and ingenious, the art is godlike, and the content is very adult. It has seen several anime adaptations, each with their own pros and cons, but nothing beats the original manga. While this series has seen many omnibus (multiple books in one) releases both in Japan and in other languages such as in Europe (I know the German release has one off the top of my head), it has always been a single-book edition in English. With 40 volumes now in Japanese (Dark Horse still has no release date for volume 40 as of this writing), and a retail price of nearly $600 for all the books, Berserk certainly is an expensive and lengthy hobby to get into. An omnibus format is preferable by many collectors such as myself, but if this series had seen a standard 3-in-1 paperback release such as the VizBigs of Dragon Ball Z, Vagabond, etc, I probably would not have double dipped (I already own every single volume). But when Dark Horse announced a deluxe edition of the manga, with leather hardback, in full magazine size, I just had to get it, and I can guarantee you it is worth it. Now on to the book itself. You can see how this edition is sized compared to the single volumes in the pictures attached, and it is certainly much bigger. The illustrations are much easier to follow, and the sound effects, originally untranslated in the first 11 volumes by Dark Horse, are now translated, which was a welcome addition. The faux leather binding is very nice as well. Collectors will be happy to hear that all three textless, original cover art pieces for the first 3 volumes are included at the back of the book on glossy paper. The manga itself is not glossy paper, but I would say that does not reduce its value at all. No other pages are in color, unfortunately, but that is just how DH was given the materials from the Japanese publisher. It has a ribbon bookmark on the spine, and the spine itself is also sewn and not glued, so you do not have to worry when laying it open on a table. At the end of the book is a one-page background on Kentaro Miura. While this omnibus will save a little bit of horizontal shelf space, it is much taller. My only gripe with the book is that it was printed in China, unlike with the rest of the series which was printed in the USA, but seeing as there are no visible drawbacks or obvious cheap decisions, I will keep my review at a full 5/5. Now I just need to figure out what to do with all my single volumes if I keep getting these Deluxe Editions. Hah! I received this volume from Amazon for nearly 50% off due to its preorder price, which was very nice. Otherwise, its $50 retail value is probably pretty pricey for many. For those looking to get into Berserk for the first time, this edition will probably not save you any money (although it is very worth it!) It is unfortunate that the book seems to be selling out, and many preorders have been pushed back weeks if not months while Dark Horse prints more. Good for Miura and DH, but not so ideal for the consumers. Hope it gets sorted out soon, Amazon should really place caps on preorders for stock they do not have. Can't wait to see more of these editions! Will probably take 4 or more years for it to catch up (not to mention Miura's hiatuses), so if you're not that big of a collector and just want to read the series, the single volumes are probably your better option. Edit May 2021: Rest in Peace Miura-sensei. Your work on Berserk has impacted my life so much and immeasurable numbers around the world, I hope you passed happy surrounded with family and friends. It seems fitting Guts will be left to struggle for an eternity (unless his editors/Studio Gaga decide to continue the series), but I think we all know in our hearts Miura-san had this all mapped out with Griffith's inevitable demise. I personally will continue to purchase the Deluxe Editions to complete my collection, as this series is a masterpiece to deserves to be read and preserved, ending or no ending. Thank you Miura-san for sharing with us the incredible mini-world within your brain, and your amazing artwork. You shall never be forgotten.

The BEST manga ever written gets the release it's always deserved!
Format: Hardcover
You've probably heard it or seen it written, but please let my voice be added to the chorus: Berserk is manga perfection. There's a reason it's the number 1 rated manga on sites like My Anime List and Anilist. It's an epic, beautiful, brutal, nuanced story of hardship, of overcoming hardship, of the power of companionship, and of what it really means to dedicate yourself wholly to one goal. The writing, especially the character writing of the protagonist Guts and the antagonist Griffith, is superb. Guts is one of the most perfectly and fully realized characters in all of fiction and seeing him develop and grow across the series is one of the most satisfying that I've experienced regardless of the genre or medium of the story. The world-building and creativity that is on display in how Berserk's dark medieval fantasy functions first as a seemingly normal medieval theme with only a few hints as to supernatural things bubbling under the surface. Berserk cannot be talked about without mentioning Miura's incredible artwork. While Deluxe Vol. 1 has by far the weakest art of the whole series, it's still really good. Miura really knows how to frame dynamic action and how to draw your eye from one panel to the next very cleanly and deliberately. The details he puts in are incredible, whether it be all of the finery of a knight's armor or the grotesque monstrosity of a demon, each and every panel was created with care, passion, and dedication by a master of his craft. The deluxe release really lives up to its name, I am happy to say. Much larger than any previous releases of Berserk, it lets you fully enjoy the opulence of Miura's beautiful artwork. The leather cover proves that simple and elegant is all you need to make a striking book cover that will demand attention when it sits on your shelf. Really, the only criticism I can give this product is that it's going to make you want to immediately drop a bunch of money to buy the rest of the deluxe releases. I would urge you to give in to that thought process. Berserk only gets better from here on out, and Berserk Deluxe Vol. 2 is even better than Vol. 1. I cannot recommend Berserk Deluxe enough. It's the best way to read the best manga ever written. You will not be disappointed picking this masterpiece up!

Dark, brutal, and beautifully crafted
Format: Hardcover
Berserk Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 is an absolute masterpiece of dark fantasy. From the first pages, Kentaro Miura pulls you into a grim, unforgiving world filled with violence, demons, and moral complexity. This isn’t light entertainment — it’s intense, raw, and emotionally heavy. Guts is one of the most compelling protagonists in manga. He’s not heroic in a traditional sense — he’s driven by rage, trauma, and survival. But beneath the brutality, you can already sense depth and tragedy shaping his journey. The artwork is phenomenal. Miura’s detail is on another level — intricate armor, monstrous designs, and dramatic shading that truly shines in the oversized deluxe format. The hardcover edition feels premium, with thick pages and a sleek black design that makes it stand out on any shelf. This volume sets the tone for one of the most influential manga series ever created. It’s violent and mature, but also philosophical in subtle ways — exploring fate, struggle, and human resilience. A must-own for any serious manga collector.

A Great, Horrifying Tale Contained within a Gorgeous, Dense Hardcover- A True Work of Art! A Great, Horrifying Tale Contained within a Gorgeous, Dense Hardcover- A True Work of Art!
Format: Hardcover
Let me preface this review by stating that I'm not a very big anime/manga fan; I'm actually quite picky when it comes to the two mediums. But, as an avid Soulsborne fan, I was no stranger to Berserk and what the series has done to inspire the games that I hold dear, so I knew it was only a matter of time before I inevitably dipped my toes into the dark world of Berserk to see if it, too, would be something I enjoy. Once I learned of the deluxe edition and after reading the reviews (as well as praise from friends and coworkers alike), I knew it would be a great place to start. After all, the books look tantalizing enough. The highest praise I can give it is, only a few days later after receiving the book, I have the next four volumes on order. It's a dark, gritty world that's unforgiving and bleak, but also addicting; I can't believe I've been putting it off all these years. So far the story has been great and I find myself wanting to drop everything and just read the entire series in one go. And these deluxe versions are absolutely worth it: thick, heavy and satisfying to hold, I can't think of any word other than "sexy" to describe these books. Large art, a ribbon bookmark, all bound in a faux leather hardcover that looks and feels sturdy and great in your hands. Whether a newcomer or longtime fan, I don't think you could possibly go wrong in buying these for your collection- you won't be disappointed!

A Grim and Gripping Introduction to a Legendary Series
Format: Hardcover
Best purchase I have ever made this is my reasoning. Volume 1 throws you straight into the brutal world of Berserk, setting the tone with unrelenting violence, mystery, and raw emotion. Guts is introduced as a lone warrior with a haunted past, and Miura’s dark, detailed art immediately pulls you in. It’s harsh and unsettling, but that’s what makes it unforgettable. This volume lays the foundation for one of the most powerful and emotionally complex stories in manga.
