  • The most Broadsword you could ask for!
I picked this up recently while it was on sale. This is my favorite Jethro Tull album, and was amazed at the amount of music and information in this set. Please note the included DVDs are audio only. The remastered original album sounds wonderful through my 2 channel amp and Bose 301s. The live material gives you all but 2 tracks from Broadsword (I already put together a live Broadsword play list). Plenty of extra tracks, studio and live. The included book is packed with info including lyrics, album development and touring memories. If you've read this far, you must be contemplating purchasing this set. While I didn't jump on it when first launched, I'm glad I grabbed it when it was on sale. ... show more

  • 40th Anniversary Edition revives the original! 40th Anniversary Edition revives the original!
Been a Tull fan for ages, but somehow when Broadsword came out in 1982, I just didn't care that much for it. I have ten other anniversary editions and have enjoyed them all (particularly the 5.1 audio), so when this went on sale, I figured I would give it a spin. WOW! I am amazed at how good it sounds and how good the music is. I didn't listen to this for years but it is a really great album! The remastered album sounds fantastic in 5.1, but the "associated recordings" and demos really make this a special set. There is clearly enough material here for a second album. I haven't played the live material yet, but even if it was not included in this set, I would be happy to have it. Yes, the packaging of the discs themselves is horrendous, so I just put the 5 studio discs in a DVD case (see photo) for easy access and so I don't mangle them - problem solved! ... show more

  • Need to have a 2nd or 3rd pressing of entire J.T. book format series
Just got my 8 disc monster edition of Broadsword and the Beast and is my 9th one so far (5 to go!!) And like the other ones is nothing short of spectacular!! Cds that sound perfect ,dvd audio, dvd video, and the book portion covers everything one could imagine, and in this book format doesn't take as much space as those bigger box sets,(but I still love those as well),and the alternate versions are solid and "stand up" on there own, live stuff spectacular as well. You can hear and see that all of this was not 1/2 @$$ ,would like to see 2nd pressings Stand Up,Warchild,Passion Play, Too Old to Rock and Roll.... and heavy horses,I can't imagine paying 300 to 800 for each for these and will hope a 2nd or 3rd pressing will materialize ... show more

  • Awesome So Far!
I saw some of the negative reviews of this latest JT box set; primarily regarding the price. Having all of these sets in my collection, I was initially questioning the higher price of this one. But with eight discs and a very lengthy book, it’s certainly understandable. I received it on 1 September and started listening to today. In fact, I have the first CD on the stereo now. The sound quality is amazing for an early 80’s recording and I forgot just how good this JT album is since I haven’t heard it for a long time. For now, I rate it five stars based on what I hear this far. If any part of it is not worthy to have been included in this set, I’ll revise my review. It’s yet another outstanding release in the JT catalog and I’m looking forward to the rest; especially Crest of a Knave!!! ... show more

  • Jethro Tull and Steve Wilson, If either of those names peak your interest you'll love it
A wonderful remix of an often overlooked album . I am a huge fan of Tull and between Stand Up, Benefit and Auqualung and THick as A Brick ( all landmark albums) I came to expect every Tull album to sound a certain way and anything less than fearless perfection , both musically and intellectually was disappointing and I sort of lost track of what Anderson was doing and I wasnt even aware "Broadsword" existed. I recently upgraded my home theater to true Dolby Atmos and was looking for recordings that were considered audiophile quality productions done in Atmos when I discovered Broadsword. When I saw Steve Wilson had done the remix I was sold. I discovered a new Jethro Tull album that compares to his best work and mixed by the reigning king of prog rock remixes . It is a box set with 4 other discs so its pricey but Wilson almost always includes an unaltered copy of the album he is remixing so you can hear the improvements. Unfortunately this was done in 2005 before Atmos existed but he includes a 5.1 DTS and Dolby 5.1 mix and a 150 page book. Its the first Tull album since Aqualung that requires me to wait until noon to even consider listening to it so my neighbors wont hate me. No one expresses righteous indignation at injustice and champions the plight of the most vulnerable better than Anderson when he is in the zone. Its not "Aqualung" but not every Stones record is "Sticky Fingers" or "Get Yer Ya yas Out " either, but sonically its better than any of those masterpieces. ... show more

  • Quit complaining about the price the set as well worth it
Yes the price is a bit more expensive than other sets have been. I also agree that some of the material on these disc is kind of useless to me I don’t need rehearsal tracks and things like that. I do love most of the bonus tracks some of them are very good but the big thing about this set that makes it worth the money is the surroundsound mix it is amazing one of the best of any sets so far. My only complaint is with the packaging it up how you have to snap the CDs into place ... show more

  • Great Box Set - Easy Fix for Packaging/CD holder
Great box set including live in Germany 1982. There is an easy fix for the poorly constructed CD holders front and back inside covers: The springy clips at the bottom provide so much pressure that the discs won't even sit flat - they bend, and are difficult to remove, and may permanently warp if left as is. The discs must be pushed down from the top edge toward the clips and then they can clear the retaining tabs at the top. The ones seated flat against the back of the covers sit flat and need no modification. First, remove the two topmost discs in each section Then simply break off the springy clip on one side (I broke off the ones on the left) There is plenty of tension provided by the remaining clip and now all the discs now sit nice and flat!! They are also much easier to remove. ... show more
