  • The Perfect Book BEFORE A Second Child Arrives
Author Sheryl McFarlane uses simple words in THE BLUE CANOE to tackle a common family situation. How do you allay the fears and concerns of a first child when Mom is pregnant with a second child? A pregnant mother and young daughter spend the day in a canoe on a lake. They speak together and often mention “coming-soon baby.” Illustrator Laurel Aylesworth adds colorful and vivid drawings to go with the well-crafted story. Toward the end of the book, the daughter says, “I hope you hurry up and get here, coming-soon baby. I have a million things to show you and a million things for us to do.” I loved reading THE BLUE CANOE and recommend this book. W. • charming story
I love how there are books now for big sister and brothers to be. Going from being an only child to having a new brother or sister in the house is a big transition. In this book, the little girl loves going out in the blue canoe with her mother. But she wonders, will her new sibling love the same things she does? This story takes all the questions about what a new baby will be like, and answers them as best her mother can. These are not questions about what a baby is like. These are questions about what the baby will like. Will the baby love the canoe? Will they love the wildlife of the lake? Will they understand how important they all are? And the questions about her mother being too busy for her. The mother says sure, I might be, but that doesn’t mean you will be abandoned. Even if there is no blue canoe in the family this is a safe easy picture book to explain how children are different, and may not like the same things you do, but your mother will always love you and try to make time for you, no matter what. ... show more

  • Great book!
The Blue Canoe is a cute little story about canoeing but also discussing an upcoming baby sibling. While seeing different animals on the trip, the mother and daughter discuss the fears and joys of having a baby sibling that’s coming soon. It’s a nice little story that can be used for any child that is having a new addition to the family. The illustrations are wonderful and help children understand animals and how different or alike a sibling can be and that either are beautiful. Great for a home library when expecting a new sibling! ... show more

  • Great Story
I found this story to be heart warming. As a big sister, I know the feeling of curiosity and worry that comes with getting a new sibling. This story did beautifully in expressing those emotions while having the mother comfort and reassure her daughter. The illustrations really helped with the story and made it come across so perfect in my opinion. I love the message that even when things change, it doesn’t mean it has to be bad or that everything will change. This is a great bedtime story that could help many soon to be big brothers/sisters. Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this e-ARC. ... show more

  • Tender tale of a mama, daughter, and a coming soon baby!
"The Blue Canoe" is a tender tale that follows the journey of a little girl and her mama as they canoe on the lake, ruminating about how life is about to change with the "coming-soon-baby." Fueled by both excitement and concern, the little girl poses common questions kids ask when families are about to grow. This book would make for a wonderful gift to an expecting family who want a jumping off point for important conversations with their older children about the blessing of a baby. ... show more

  • Still time for new baby AND current child
Beautiful pictures and a wonderful story about a new baby coming to the family. It teaches that mom can be tired AND still find enjoyment in the things she enjoyed with the older child, everyone in the family can like different things, and truly displays a mom and child bonding.

  • Really loved this book
I really loved "The Blue Canoe" by Sheryl McFarlane. The story and illustrations were both peaceful and imaginative. I loved how nature, especially different types of birds, were very present in the book. I appreciated how the author used canoeing as an opportunity for mother and daughter to discuss a new baby joining the family. The images of the parent and child in the canoe and swimming in the lake were wonderful. Beautifully illustrated. This book would be great to read aloud. ... show more
