We bought this for our son when he was about 2 years old. He's 7 now and it has gone through another wild child since then. This excavator was purchased to be used in an unused dirt pile and it has been a favorite of our 2 boys ever since. It has been used with a wide range of kids from age 2 to age 12 so far. It has held up beautifully over the last 5 years of owning it. No rust, no maintenance, nothing. It has weathered the elements very well. We have left it outside in all types of weather and it is still going strong. Our second son, now 4, is the primary user of it. He drags it all over the yard and it has not broken yet. Believe me when I say, he is rough on everything in our home. It was also easy to put together for my engineer husband so I can't take credit that. For how inexpensive this toy is it will bring your kid’s years of satisfaction and ease to your wallet. The most amazing part is that it gets them outside. We got this sand digger for my nephew’s birthday, and it's officially his favorite toy now. From the moment it was unwrapped, he was digging up every patch of sand he could find with pure joy. There was a dent when it arrived, but Amazon handled it quickly and professionally, kudos for solid customer service. The digger itself is sturdy and easy for kids to operate. It’s held up well under some enthusiastic play, and watching my nephew pretend he's working on a construction site is pure gold. A total hit at the birthday party and beyond! My son loves this for his sandbox. This was the perfect addition and extends his playtime. At first glance the material isn't the sturdiest but gets the job done. Would recommend spraying the movable parts down with WD-40 or silicone spray from season to season.

I had my eye on this toy for my son for over a year. When it came time for his 3rd birthday, the right time arrived. I ordered the package with the vest and hard hat and the standard, no wheels excavator. It was a little difficult to put together, and the instructions could be clearer, but between other reviews and the Internet, I managed to assemble it. My son was in love. A few things to consider: 1. I consider this to be appropriate for my 3 year old son, assuming adult supervision. If he tried to lift it or move it on his own, he could accidentally pinch his fingers if he did it the wrong way. 2. Is not very heavy and the size is perfect for any 3 year old. I’m not sure how big a kid can be to use it (probably in the product description) but given the price and quality, I would be happy even if he could only use it until the age of 4 or 5. 3. As long as you don’t drop it on or bump into something that can scratch a well painted surface, this thing is very durable. 4. You’ll need a sandbox or a pile of dirt or mulch! ... show more

My 4 year old grandson (and his 2 year old brother) love this. He sits on the seat that swivels. There are 2 arms: one that raises the bucket arm up and down, and one arm that rotates the bucket. He was using it in the house to pick up toys the day he got it. A few days later my son sent of video of him in his sand box outside using the the excavator like a pro. I couldn't believe how expertly he used it. Kids learn so fast. It's great for their coordination. To clarify, the 2 yr old is not as adept because he has to reach farther. I don't recommend it for a 2 yr old. But your 4 year old will love it! I spent a few extra dollars for the vest and helmet but my grandson doesn't wear them. ... show more
